Reading Club

Our reading club was formed by 15-16 people of different sex, age and nationality. Some members were retired people some others were still at work and one went to school. The nationalities represented in the group were: Persian, Russian, Ethiopian and of course Italian. The women were many more than men but nevertheless they were about six. (It is a good number considering that most of the groups are always attended by women). The reading sessions started in December and they finished in the second part of May for a total number of 13 meetings. We met every fortnight. Each session started after dinner around nine o’ clock and ended around 11,30. All the sessions have taken place in a house and this has created a more relaxed and friendly atmosphere. The facilitator and the mentor were elected in the first meeting: It was also elected a person who was in charge to record videos for each session. At the end of each session the members were given the poems or the book to be read for the following meeting.

They had at least two weeks time to read and comment each work. When we gathered together the mentor started reading the passage or the poem which, from his point of you, was most meaningful. The facilitator had the charge to encourage the discussion. The meetings have been pleasant and relaxed and people have communicated in a very friendly atmosphere. All the members had the opportunity to say something also encouraged by the other mentor who coordinated the works. Our group was very heterogeneous but we have always believed that the diversity existing in our club was a value. In fact the opinions could be very different but always respectful of the others point of view. We have always had a good attendance of the meetings even if some people for work reasons had to leave the group but fortunately there were other people ready to replace the people who had to go away so we always had 14-15 people attending the session. We started our meetings with the Italian culture because some people were not Italian so it was an opportunity for them to come closer to the culture of the country they were living in.

Then we met the German and the Slovenian culture. Anyway the most participated discussions have been the ones on fairy tales because of their psychological meaning. We have used different method in order to improve the comprehension of literary works such as: guided reading, acting, role play, video, listening music and watching films. We started our meetings with readings and poems from Italian Literature because in our group there were some people who were not Italian, so this represented an excellent chance to make these people come closer to the culture of the country they were living in. In a few words we want to say that first of all our practice of intercultural dialogue and active citizenship started inside our group. We think to have fulfilled the aims of the project and we also feel that we might have accomplished the aim to shorten the cultural distances with Slovenian and German people.
