The Central District is the gateway to Rotterdam. Tram, bus, metro or bicycle whisk you off towards any destination you could desire. What’s more, it is only a few minutes’ walk to the city centre, where the vibrant culture and entertainment of Rotterdam are just waiting to be discovered. This is where Rotterdam and Europe meet. The high-speed trains and RandstadRail link Rotterdam to the rest of the Netherlands, as well as Rotterdam The Hague Airport and the nearby port. The Central District is a residential neighbourhood with many shops and local businesses and is traditionally known as the business heart of the city. Weena, for example, is a street lined with international businesses and multinationals. Its modern high-rise buildings and striking architecture define the face of the city centre. The area around Rotterdam Central Station is in dramatic development. In future, a dynamic public transport terminal will rise here, linked to the city centre by a broad pedestrian boulevard.

The part of Rotterdam known locally as Chinatown gets its name from the many Chinese businesses that line the beginning of the shopping street by the Kruisplein. But Chinatown is more than Chinese restaurants, supermarkets and specialty shops. This multicultural area is the melting pot of Rotterdam. Chinatown offers all the exotic products you might need and more. The West-Kruiskade, for example, has a range of specialized and multicultural shops, cafés and restaurants. From Middle Eastern bazaars and Korean bakeries to Islamic butchers, this is the place to go for those hard-to-find special treats from far-off destinations. Along the Westersingel canal, which runs between Chinatown and the Museumkwartier, the Westersingel Sculpture Route displays various works of art from Rotterdam’s International Sculpture Collection.

Shopping

The Lijnbaan is the most famous shopping street in Rotterdam. As soon as World War II ended, Rotterdam started rebuilding; air, light and space were the watchwords. In 1954, the Lijnbaan was completed and Europe’s first pedestrian-only shopping street had become a reality. Lijnbaan, Beursplein and Beurstraverse, the subterranean shopping concourse, now proudly present all the major department stores side by side. The Laurenskwartier has been around since the city’s earliest days; in fact, it was once the entire city. The Hoogstraat, where the City Hall stood until 1920, was once the very heart of Rotterdam. The Grote- or Laurenskerk at the Grotekerkplein is one of the main features in this area, one of the last remaining classical landmarks in modern Rotterdam. Although the church was badly damaged during the 1940 bombardment, restoration work started in 1952. The Late Gothic cathedral reopened its doors in 1968.

Two characteristic examples of Rotterdam’s urban development, Kop van Zuid and Katendrecht have had a rich and colourful history. Once a bustling port area that fell into disuse, the Kop van Zuid was redeveloped in the early 1990s to become a metropolitan centre with international allure. Katendrecht, also known as the Cape, was home to one of Europe’s biggest Chinese communities until the Second World War. With its low-rent workers’ housing, sailors’ bars, prostitutes and railway embankments, until the 1980s the area was best known as a ‘notorious’ neighbourhood.

Where ships once departed for the East, the Lloydkwartier now has homes and businesses with impressive waterfront vistas. Modern high-rise buildings mix with renovated wharves and warehouses in one of the city’s most contemporary spots. The redevelopment retained as much as possible of the robust port character. The Lloydkwartier is the heart of Rotterdam’s audiovisual, film and ICT industry, and the Schiecentrale is the heart of all that creative energy. Entrepreneurs and artists collaborate and coexist in this former power plant, which dates back to 1904. In addition to the creative enterprise in the Lloydkwartier, the area also has a theatre, an authentic jazz cellar, various cafés and restaurants, and the Lloyd Multiplein, a large sport complex and event venue. The Pleinbioscoop open-air cinema event is held there every year.

Historic Delfshaven is a picturesque area of Rotterdam that just begs to be explored. Once part of Delft, Delfshaven has a grand history and is famous for its association with the Pilgrim Fathers. In search of religious freedom, these Puritans fled England and spent years in Delfshaven before continuing their journeys to North America, where they were the first colonists in what would later become New England. The Pelgrimvaderskerk on the Voorhaven harbour dates back to 1761 and is a tangible marker of that chapter in history. With its shipyards and warehouses, Delfshaven was an important location for the Dutch East India Company, the VOC. Nowadays it’s nostalgic and intimate, laced with waterways and canals lined in historic buildings and courtyards. Shop to your heart’s content in charming boutiques and ateliers, or sit at one of the many sidewalk cafes and enjoy the exceptional beers on tap.

Outside the centre of Rotterdam, the city also offers various attractions, parks, buildings, shopping centres and neighbourhoods that are more than worth a visit. Rotterdam Zuid, for example, is the youngest district in Rotterdam, and its residents reflect that fact: 70% are under the age of 18. The Zuid district includes the Zuidplein shopping centre, the Ahoy arena and events centre, the colourful market at Afrikaanderplein and of course the De Kuip stadium, home base to FC Feyenoord. The streets of the Oude Noorden area with its old workers houses are lively and interesting; more and more trendy shops are opening here. Children and parents can have fun all day long at the Rotterdam Zoo and Plaswijckpark. For peace, quiet and nature, visit the Kralingse Bos, the Hoge en Lage Bergse Bos or Trompenburg Arboretum with its gorgeous botanical gardens. Whether you are here to shop, explore culture or seek out quiet green spaces, there is always something to do and see in Rotterdam - wherever you are.

ROTTERDAM WORLD PORT WORLD CITY

Rotterdam CENTRAAL DISTRICT

KOP VAN ZUID & KATENDRECHT

SCHEEPVAARTKWARTIER
