Diverse kunstenaars / Various artists, 2001 (aanleg /construction), Westersingel - Westzeedijk De Beeldenroute Westersingel bestaat uit veertien ruimtelijke kunstwerken. Al lopende van het Centraal Station richting Veerhaven, passeer je o.a. La Grande Musicienne van Henri Laurens en l’Homme qui Marche van Auguste Rodin. The Westersingel Sculpture Route consists of fourteen 3D works of art. While walking from Central Station towards Veerhaven, you pass such pieces as The Great Musician by Henri Laurens and The Walking Man by Auguste Rodin.

Museumpark 18-20, +31 (0)10 441 94 00 / 4 75 Bezoek Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen en maak een ware reis door de geschiedenis van de kunst, van de vroege Middeleeuwen tot de 21ste eeuw. Auke de Vries, 1993, NAi (vijver/pond) Het beeld in de vijver van het NAi is afgestemd op de schaal en de maat van de omgeving en een weerspiegeling van het NAi-gebouw: beiden hebben een open bovenzijde. De Vries gebruikte voor de sculptuur expressieve vormen en kleuren. The sculpture in the pond at the NAi was designed in harmony with the scale and the size of the surrounding area and is a reflection of the NAi building itself: both are open at the top. De Vries used expressive forms and colours in the sculpture.

14 // SCREW ARCH Claes Oldenburg, 1982, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (tuin/garden) Pop-art kunstenaar Claes Oldenburg begon in 1965 voor het eerst met zijn extreme uitvergrotingen van alledaagse gebruiksvoorwerpen, zijn Proposals for Colossal Monuments. De Screw Arch is van aluminium en vormt een perfecte boog, afgeleid van het ontwerp voor een brug. Pop artist Claes Oldenburg first started to make his extreme, oversized versions of everyday objects, his Proposals for Colossal Monuments, in 1965. The Screw Arch is made from aluminium and forms a perfect arc, based on the design for a bridge.

Daarnaast biedt zij een podium voor jonge kustenaars, die zich bewegen op het grensgebied van beeldende kunst, illustratie en grafische vormgeving. V!P’s Gallery specialises in classic and modern forms of Pop Art. It also provides a platform for young artists working on the cutting edge where visual art, illustration and graphic design intersect.

18 // WERELDMUSEUM ROTTERDAM Willemskade 25, +31(0)10 270 71 72 In het najaar van 2009 heropende het Wereldmuseum Rotterdam na een grootschalige verbouwing. Dit dynamisch centrum voor wereldculturen is een unieke plek om kennis op te doen en culturen te ervaren. De vaste opstelling met 1.800 topstukken uit onder andere Oceanië, Tibet, Japan, Afrika en Amerika is gratis toegankelijk. Daarnaast vinden er jaarlijks twee thematentoonstellingen plaats, die tot in het Wereldrestaurant voelbaar zijn. In the autumn of 2009, the Wereldmuseum Rotterdam reopened after large-scale renovations. This dynamic centre for world cultures is a unique place to acquire knowledge and experience different cultures. The permanent exhibition, with 1,800 key pieces from regions as diverse as Oceania, Tibet, Japan, Africa and America, is open to the public free of charge. There are also two themed exhibitions a year that are reflected in the entire museum – including the World Restaurant.

WATERFRONT / NIEUWE MARKT 27 // URBAN PHOTOS Pannekoekstraat 8a, +31(0)10 280 94 95 De collectie van Galerie Urban Photos bestaat uit prachtige oude en nieuwe Rotterdamse en Nederlandse foto’s, maar ook uit historische wereldfoto’s. De foto’s zijn meestal uitgevoerd in zwart-wit en verkrijgbaar in grote tot zeer grote formaten. The collection of the Urban Photos Gallery consists of beautiful old and new photos from Rotterdam and the Netherlands, but also historic photos from around the world. Most of the photos are black and white and available in large to very large sizes.

2 // ERASMUS Hendrick de Keyser, 1622, Grotekerkplein Het standbeeld van Erasmus is het oudste standbeeld van Nederland. Erasmus was een van de belangrijkste vertegenwoordigers van het humanisme. Hij werd geboren in Rotterdam en groeide uit tot symbool van de stad. Na vele omzwervingen werd het beeld op het Grotekerkplein geplaatst, waar ook het Erasmushuis zich bevindt. The statue of Erasmus is the oldest statue in the Netherlands. Erasmus was one of the most important exponents of humanism. He was born in Rotterdam and became a symbol of the city. After much wandering the statue was finally erected in Grotekerkplein, where the Erasmus House stands.

3 // LAURENSKERK Grotekerkplein 27, +31(0)10 413 14 94 De Grote of Sint – Laurenskerk is van oudsher de hoofdkerk van Rotterdam. Gebouwd tussen circa 1449 en 1525, is de Laurenskerk het enige nog resterende laatgotische gebouw uit het van oorsprong middeleeuwse Rotterdam. Voor velen staat de Laurenskerk symbool voor de geschiedenis van Rotterdam. Ook nu blijft de Laurenskerk een imposante aanwezigheid te midden van alle architectonische nieuwbouw. Traditionally the main church of Rotterdam, the St Laurence Church is the only remaining Late Gothic building that dates back to Rotterdam’s medieval origins. Built between ±1449 and 1525, the church is seen by many people as a symbol of Rotterdam’s history. The St Laurence Church is still an imposing edifice today, amidst all the modern architecture that surrounds it.

KOP VAN ZUID

Pablo Picasso, 1970, Westersingel Sylvette is de twintigjarige muze van Picasso, die hij in 1954 op 73-jarige leeftijd ontmoette. De kunstenaar beeldde haar af in de verschillende stijlen die hij ooit hanteerde, waaronder zijn kubistische stijl. Beeldhouwer Carl Nesjar maakte er een betonnen sculptuur van. Sylvette was Picasso’s twenty-year-old muse, whom he met in 1954 when he was 73. The artist portrayed her in the various styles he employed, including Cubism. Sculptor Carl Nesjar translated this artistic figure into a concrete sculpture.

19 // WILHELMINA Charlotte van Pallandt, 1967, Het Park Charlotte van Pallandt kreeg in 1966 de opdracht om een beeld te maken van vorstin Wilhelmina als koningin van het verzet: wilskrachtig en onverzettelijk. Het beeld werd in hardsteen uitgevoerd om het massieve en het onverzettelijke extra te benadrukken.

The renovated warehouse Las Palmas on the Kop van Zuid, which houses the Nederlands Fotomuseum, provides an excellent backdrop for showcasing the photos at their best. The museum shop sells books on photography, photographs from the collection and postcards.

Jeff Wall, 1996-2001, Koninginnenhoofd Het monument Lost Luggage Depot is een herinnering aan diegenen die zijn vertrokken en degenen die zijn aangekomen, met de Holland Amerika Lijn. De stellage met koffers en tassen uit verschillende tijdperken verbeeldt hoe zij de band met hun geboortegrond hebben doorgesneden. The Lost Luggage Depot monument is a reminder of those who departed and those who arrived with the Holland America Line. The racks of suitcases and bags from different eras symbolise how those people severed their ties to the lands where they were born.

4 // SANTA CLAUS Paul McCarthy, 2001, Eendrachtsplein In 2008 kreeg Santa Claus, de omstreden sculptuur van Paul McCarthy, eindelijk een vaste plek in Rotterdam. De zes meter hoge kerstman houdt een buttplug in de rechterhand. McCarthy neemt hiermee de Westerse consumeerdrang onder de loep. In 2008, Santa Claus, the controversial sculpture by Paul McCarthy, was finally given a permanent home in Rotterdam. The six-metre high figure holds a butt plug in its right hand. It is McCarthy’s way of lampooning Western consumer culture.

Museumpark 11, +31(0)10 436 37 13 Het Chabot Museum in Rotterdam is gevestigd in een monument van het Nieuwe Bouwen. In de witte hoekvilla uit 1938 vind je een vaste collectie met prachtige schilderijen, tekeningen, beelden en grafiek van de Rotterdamse Kunstenaar Henk Chabot (1894-1949). Hiernaast bezit het museum een collectie van Schortemeijer met werken uit de jaren twintig en een collectie van 26 werken uit de Tweede Wereldoorlog. The Chabot Museum in Rotterdam is housed in a listed historical monument, characteristic of the functional architecture movement. This white corner villa from 1938 has a permanent collection of paintings, drawings and graphic design by expressionist artist Henk Chabot (1894-1949). The museum now also has the Schortemeijer Collection of works from the 1920s, as well as a collection of 26 pieces from the Second World War.

Charlotte van Pallandt was commissioned in 1966 to make a statue of Dutch sovereign Wilhelmina as queen of the resistance movement: strongwilled and indomitable. The statue was made from bluestone to add extra emphasis to the solidity and determination.

In het NAi worden onder meer tekeningen, maquettes en foto’s van Nederlandse architecten als Berlage, Rietveld en Dudok bewaard. Een van de topstukken is de naast het NAi gelegen museumwoning Huis Sonneveld: een hypermoderne villa uit de jaren dertig, die geheel is ingericht met Gispen-meubels. Naast de vaste collectie presenteert het NAi wisselende, inspirerende tentoonstellingen. The Netherlands Architecture Institute (NAi) is one of the largest architecture museums in the world. The museum collection includes drawings, scale models and photos by Dutch architects such as Berlage, Rietveld and Dudok. One of the main pieces in the collection is the museum residence next to the NAi, Huis Sonneveld: a hypermodern villa from the 1930s that has been entirely furnished with furniture designed by W.H. Gispen. In addition to its permanent collection, the NAi presents inspiring temporary exhibitions.

Willem de Kooning, 1969-1980, Weena De monumentale sculptuur Seated Woman is een eerbetoon aan de van oorsprong Rotterdamse kunstenaar Willem de Kooning. Hij was een van de vertegenwoordigers van het Amerikaanse Abstract Expressionisme. De vrouw, in al haar expressie, vormt een van zijn centrale thema’s. The monumental sculpture Seated Woman is a homage to Rotterdamborn artist Willem de Kooning, whose work was representative of Abstract Expressionism. Woman in all her expressiveness is one of his key themes.

Van Vollenhovenstraat 15, +31(0)10 243 00 44 De twee gerenoveerde pakhuizen waarin Animaux huist herbergen de absolute top van de Nederlandse kunst. Er hangen schilderijen van onder andere Eugène Brands, Rob Scholte, Jan Cremer, Armando, Jasper Krabbé en foto’s van Frans Jansen en Paul Huf. The two renovated warehouses in which Animaux is housed accommodate the absolute best in Dutch art. There are paintings by such artists as Eugène Brands, Rob Scholte, Jan Cremer, Armando, Jasper Krabbé and photos by Frans Jansen and Paul Huf.

Auke de Vries, 1983, Willemsbrug Auke de Vries liet zich voor Maasbeeld inspireren door het strakke lijnenspel van de Willemsbrug en door elementen uit de scheepvaart. Het kunstwerk is een speelbal van het water in de Maas en van de wind, die de onderdelen zacht in beweging zetten. Auke de Vries took his inspiration for Maasbeeld from the taut play of lines in the Willemsbrug and from elements derived from shipping. The work of art is a plaything of the water in the Maas and the wind, which cause the components to move gently.

Voorhaven 16 Petri Voet ontwerpt en maakt naast kleurrijke keramische kunstwerken ook alledaags keramiek, zoals vazen en schalen. Een van haar meest succesvolle ontwerpen is de tulpvaas. Petri Voet designs and makes colourful ceramic works of art as well as everyday ceramics such as vases and dishes. One of her most successful designs is the tulip vase.

25 // DE VERWOESTE STAD Ossip Zadkine, 1951, Plein 1940 De Verwoeste Stad van Zadkine is het belangrijkste oorlogsmonument van Rotterdam en verbeeldt het leed van de stad. Het gat in het lichaam symboliseert hoe Rotterdam in zijn hart werd getroffen door het Duitse bombardement in de 2e Wereldoorlog. The Destroyed City by Zadkine is Rotterdam’s main war memorial and it depicts the suffering of the city. The hole in the body symbolises how Rotterdam was cut to the heart by the German bombs during the Second World War.

Het centrum van Rotterdam is zeer afwisselend, met vooral moderne, naoorlogse architectuur. Slechts een aantal monumentale gebouwen overleefden de 2e wereldoorlog, zoals het Stadhuis en de St. Laurenskerk. Rond de Coolsingel ligt het winkelhart van Rotterdam, waar iedere dag gewinkeld kan worden. The centre of Rotterdam is highly diverse, consisting mainly of modern, post-World War 2 architecture. Het gebied rond het Museumpark is bijzonder rijk aan musea. Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, de Kunsthal Rotterdam en het Nederlands Architectuurinstituut liggen op loopafstand van elkaar. Vele culturele en culinaire hotspots van Rotterdam bevinden zich hier, met name in de Witte de Withstraat. Kunsthal Rotterdam 6 februari t/m 6 juni / 6 February - 6 June “Don’t Mention the War” brengt het werk samen van circa vijfenveertig nationale en internationale kunstenaars, waarin op uiteenlopende wijze conflicten, de bescherming en het verzet ertegen en de verwerking ervan aan de orde worden gesteld. This exhibition brings together diverse work by nearly 45 Dutch and international artists, addressing conflicts, protection, resistance and how people deal with these issues.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen, Museumpark 18-20 18 september t/m 23 januari 2011 / 18 September - 23 January 2011 De Rotterdamse kunstenaar maakte rond de eeuwwisseling naam in Parijs. Deze tentoonstelling belicht aan de hand van hoogtepunten zijn beginperiode, doorbraak, reizen en internationale stijl en het latere succes. Rotterdam-born artist Kees van Dongen made a name for himself in turn-of-the-century Paris. The highlights depicted in this exhibition show his early period, breakthrough, travels and international style, as well as his success later in life.
