Witte de Withstraat is known for its artistic, multicultural atmosphere and dynamic nightlife. Sometimes referred to as the ‘Axis of Art’, it runs from Museumpark to the Maritime Museum and is lined in galleries, avant-garde fashion boutiques and art cafés. 24

Margreeth Olsthoorn en MGH2O Those in the know come to Rotterdam from all over to visit Margreeth Olsthoorn’s famous shops. ENG Oude Noorden This former working-class neighbourhood has recently become an up-and-coming shopping district, similar to Le Marais in Paris. More and more designers and creative entrepreneurs are moving into the renovated buildings in Zwaanshals and along Zaagmolenkade. Find vintage design at Spam, marvel at the art on display in Rotabs Stylecenter, pick out pastries at Lof der Zoetheid and stroll along the Rotte River. 71
Kralingen This upscale neighbourhood of notaries, lawyers and doctors is also home to many students, thanks to the close proximity of Erasmus University. The prosperous locals frequent the excellent delis, wine shops and other culinary speciality shops on the exuberant Lusthofstraat. Oostzeedijk is also a popular spot to shop (vintage and novelties) and to see and be seen, not to mention the several fantastic restaurants. Cosy and charming, De Hemel op Aarde serves great tapas, and De Kleine Ondeugd - a trendy, narrow restaurant that serves a spicy three-course Thai meal for a nice price - is packed every night. Zuidplein Trying to escape the rain? The metro takes you all the way to the heart of the Zuidplein shopping centre, the oldest indoor mall in Rotterdam, where shoppers are always warm and dry. The many shops range from Cool Cat to M&S, from Bakkerij Bart to Suri Food, not to mention nail salons and hairdressers. Alexandrium This shopping boulevard features 16 megastores, a shopping centre with 136 shops, and a speciality home decoration mall with 60 shops. Historisch Delfshaven The most picturesque place to shop, this inner harbour area in Rotterdam West has exceptional antique stores and novelty shops tucked away between galleries, cafés and restaurants (tips: De Parel for Lebanese food and Café De Ooievaar to sample the local genevers). Check out Manet, where you can buy porcelain, silver and flatware. Or De Maritieme art and antiques shop, housed in the former Henkes gin distillery.
