Digestion Song Let’s listen to a song

Digestion Blues   Digestion starts in the mouth,                    Where the food’s chewed up before it heads South.          The salivary glands make it all wet,                And it’s there that the food starts to digest.   CHORUS: Chew it up and swallow those itty-bitty pieces, Take out all the good stuff, in the end it turns to faeces. Churn it up and swallow it, turn it into goo. Now you get to sing those digestion blues.

The esophagus squeezes the food on down,            And into the stomach, that’s where it’s found.          The gastric juices break down the food,                And the stomach muscles churn it up, so it can be used.   CHORUS: Chew it up and swallow those itty-bitty pieces,      Take out all the good stuff, in the end it turns to faeces.                                    Churn it up and swallow it, turn it into goo.                   Now you get to sing those digestion blues.

The pancreas and liver add insulin and bile.        It’s in the duodenum for just a little while.          This gooey, gooey muck is now called chyme, It’s nutrients are taken in the small intestine.     CHORUS: Chew it up and swallow those itty-bitty pieces,   Take out all the good stuff, in the end it turns to faeces. Churn it up and swallow it, turn it into goo. Now you get to sing those digestion blues.

It’s in the large intestine where the water’s taken out,           The chyme’s compacted nicely, of this there is no doubt.     It passes through the rectum, the anus is at the end,          The sphincter muscle contracts, your bowel movement  begins.   CHORUS:                                               Chew it up and swallow those itty-bitty pieces,       Take out all the good stuff, in the end it turns to faeces.                                 Churn it up and swallow it, turn it into goo.                         Now you get to sing those digestion blues.

What is digestion?

c hew

Broke n down

The process where food is chewed and broken down into simple substances in the body.

Starting from

The Mouth

The teeth chews and grinds food into smaller pieces. The saliva makes food soft enough to swallow. The digestive juices in the saliva helps digest food slightly.

Next The Gullet

gulle t

Allows food to move from the mouth down to the stomach.

To the Stomach Food is crushed further and mixed with digestive juices. After some time, the food will look like a ‘thick soup’.

The Small intestine More digestive juices are added to the food. Food substance are so tiny that they can pass through the walls of intestine.

The Water Absorber-

Large intestine This is where the undigested food go! Most of the water is removed from the food here. Large intestine

The last step-

The Anus

The undigested food is passed out of the body as waste through an opening called the anus. The anus

What do you think? Which organ system(s) do we need the least? Explain your answer. The digestive system. If we do not eat  for a few days, we will not die. ✗ There is no one system we need the least  because all the organ systems need to  work together to enable us to function  properly.

The question Food is mixed with digestive juices in the   ______________. It becomes a thick ‘soup’ after a few hours. It is then passed into the  ________________  where the useful bits are absorbed into the  _______________. Undigested food is later passed out of the body  through the  ________.

What do you think? Food is mixed with digestive juices in the stomach. It becomes a thick ‘soup’ after a few hours. It is then passed into the small intestine where  the useful bits are absorbed into the large  intestine. ✗ Undigested food is later passed out of the body  through the anus.

Which part (A,B,C, D or E) is food being digested and passed into the blood vessels?

A B C D E

Answer: B ✗

In what way is a balloon like the stomach?

The shape. ✗ It is smaller when empty  and expands when it is  full.

Let’s learn together!

Which of the following does not take place in the mouth during digestion? Saliva makes the food soft enough to swallow. Our tongue shapes the food into a ball. Our teeth chop up the food into smaller  pieces. Digested food is absorbed into the blood.

When undigested food reaches the large intestine, ___________ is removed from it. Water Urine Carbon Dioxide Solid waste

Name one function of the digestive system. Mouth, gullet, stomach, small intestine, large  intestine and the anus. Heart, blood vessels, blood. Break down food into simple substances. Carry food, water and oxygen to all parts of  the body.

In the digestion process, food is broken down into simpler substances. In which part of the body is the digested food being absorbed into the blood?

Gullet Mouth Stomach Small Intestine

In which part of the digestive system are the digestive juices found in the system? mouth and stomach small intestine and large intestine mouth, stomach and small intestine mouth, stomach, small intestine and  large intestine

Which of the following explains why food must be completely digested before it can pass through the blood stream? Undigested food particles are too big to pass  through the walls of the small intestine into the  blood stream Undigested food particles are too big to be carried  in the blood. Absorption into the blood stream will not start  unless all the food is digested. Undigested food particles contains waste  materials that may poison the blood.

Mini-Quiz

The digestion of food is completed

In the large intestine In the small intestine

QUIZ TIME! What helps to break the food even further in the stomach? The salivary glands in the stomach helps us to break down the food even further. The gastric juices in the stomach helps us to break down the food even further.

Undigested food goes to the

Large intestine Small intestine

Digestion starts in the mouth and ends in the large intestine.
