Metaphors Unit 8: James and the giant peach

What we have learnt Simile He runs like the wind. He is as stubborn as a mule.

Today’s lesson We are going to learn metaphors. But, what exactly are metaphors?

What are metaphors? Metaphors work like similes, although it does not use like or as.

It compares an item with another item by saying that it is the other item.

 E.g.: James is like a dictionary! He knows the meanings of all the words I asked.

More examples!  Examples: Metaphor: She is a cheetah. Simile: She can run as fast as a cheetah!

Can you think of more examples?

Why use metaphors? Metaphors help to make your writing more interesting and colourful! His shirt was a flag, flying in the breeze.Her eyes were jewels, sparkling in the sun.The ocean is a playground for scuba divers.A song is a poem set to music.

More metaphors  Mary is the apple of his eye.  Meaning: A most liked or beloved person.

 He is quiet and he always bottle up his feelings.  Meaning: Keep his feelings to himself.
