Patients Waiting Less Time for Therapy Services at Sarnia Square Over the last few months we’ve been working hard to improve patient access and the overall patient experience with our services. We’ve recently added more staff to provide direct patient care, modified and developed a new scheduling process in our inpatient & outpatient care settings, which has allowed the patients to be available to receive the services they need in a manner that is friendly and convenient for the patient. In our outpatient therapy department we’ve improved processes to allow the patient to start therapy within 3 days or less from

receiving the referral. If you would like more information or would like to refer your patients for therapy services please call 507-457-4329. Starting as Strangers, Leaving as Friends: A Patient Success Story

Keith 1 year later after his stroke

By Barb Parent, OTR/L & Diane Montgomery, PT—Life for Keith Krousey was full. He was enjoying his retirement from a busy banking career, filling his days with golfing, fishing, hunting, home maintenance and landscaping, and the list goes on and on. Then on May 19, 2008, everything changed. Keith awoke that morning thinking he had slept in a position that caused his arm to fall asleep. However, he then realized he was not able to use his entire left side. Keith was brought to the Emergency Room at Winona Health where he was diagnosed with having a stroke and was admitted to the hospital. While in acute care, among many other caring professionals, Keith met Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and the Speech Therapist from the Rehabilitation department. After spending a few days in the hospital, he was transferred to Lake Winona Manor where his rehabilitation continued. Keith says, “I spent about 4 weeks in the Manor learning what I could do to help myself and regain some of my mobility”. Upon discharge from Lake

Winona Manor, Keith was not yet ready to come in for outpatient therapies so he received 2 weeks of Home Care PT and OT during which he received recommendations about safety and functioning in his home. At the end of the 2 weeks, he was ready to transfer to outpatient PT and OT at Sarnia Square. There he met his primary Physical Therapist and Physical Therapist Assistants who challenged him through balance and gait activities, muscle retraining, strengthening and stretching exercises to help him regain a higher level of safe mobility. With the help of his Occupational Therapist and Occupational Therapist Assistant, he worked on activities to improve the function of his left hand, arm and shoulder girdle. He was taught how to isolate muscles to get specific movement so he could better use his left arm and hand. Keith was highly motivated to follow the home exercise programs set up for him by PT and OT to maximize his recovery. He was also involved with determining appropriate activities that he could work on to further his progress. States Keith, “I am a very analytical person. If I want to do something, I will think of a way to try and make it work”. In August of 2008, he set 3 goals for himself. “One was to try and play a round of golf, which I was able to accomplish with the help of a good friend. The score did not really matter, it was just such a satisfying feeling to be able to do it.” “The second goal was to be able to go on the annual guys’ fishing trip to Lake Winnie in early September.” Again, with the help of friends, the

trip was a success. “This summer (2009) my goal is to fish with an open face reel. I have already progressed to where I can reel with my left hand.” Keith’s third goal was to try grouse hunting in northern Minnesota. The first trip didn’t bring him success with getting a bird, but helped him to be able to problemsolve so that his second trip in October 2008 was more successful. “This time I was able to take five birds, four with assistance, then finally one on my own with no one else along.” Keith says, “I will be forever thankful to all the people who worked so hard to help get me to this point in my recuperation. While the stroke took away most of my abilities to enjoy playing golf, hunting, shooting pool, bowling and various other physical activities, I found a new challenge in learning new ways to enjoy them again and others I can work toward. The stroke, while very trying, does have a bright side after the fact. Look at all the new things I have learned, not to mention the many new friends that would have remained unknown had it not happened.” We at Winona Health Rehab feel we are the fortunate ones to have had the chance to be involved in the rehabilitation of this very focused and determined gentleman. We thank Keith for allowing us to share his amazing story with others!

Read What Customers Have to Say About Our Services “I could go on and share so many ways the staff helped me, but would just say, I am so happy that I chose Winona Health for my rehabilitation and know the mental and physical care cannot be duplicated that I received. I would encourage anyone with a rehabilitation situation to take their problems to the Winona Health PT Department, and know they will come up with the solutions to one’s problems, just like they did for me”. —Submitted by a grateful patient——

“During my son’s parent teacher conference this past week, the focus of the meeting shifted to talk about the teacher’s experience at Winona Health and the wonderful care that was received in the Occupational Therapy department. My son’s student teacher explained how the therapists cared for him and helped him move from not using his arm to

regaining almost all of the function in his arm. What a pleasant surprise to hear his story and hear his story and hear about my co-workers in a setting that was not work related. So Kudos to Barb and Lindsey for good work that they do everyday but the impact on a person’s life is not always realized”. —-Submitted by a grateful co-worker—
