READING SKILLS: Skimming & Scanning  Skimming requires you to read the text quickly, noting only the main points.  Thus, note the title, sub-headings, first sentence of each paragraph and the last paragraph

READING SKILLS: Identifying Main Ideas & Supporting Details  The main idea is the main point or general idea of a passage, report, speech or article.  It includes details or examples; topic sentence can be main idea  Supporting details are elaboration of the main idea by giving details & examples

READING SKILLS: Contextual Clues  A word in a different context has a different meaning  Use information as cues to guess the meaning of a word or a phrase  You can also deduce from contextual clues given before or after a word or expression EXERCISE
