The Ins and Outs of K-Pop
Unlike in the Western industry, artists need to train vigorously for several years before they are allowed to “debut”, or start making music.
YG Entertainment’s latest girl group, BLACKPINK.
Entertainment companies hold auditions and scout for talent. They then choose who is allowed to train under the company and potentially debut, either as a soloist, or more commonly, as a part of a group.
The number of members can range anywhere from 4 to 12. The most common positions held are main rapper, leader, main vocalist, main dancer, and main visual.
Boy Groups
Fancams
Korean boy groups generally tend to range from 5-9 members, with few exceptions. Boy groups were the first wave of popular idols within Korea, which is why they are given a lot of preference to companies. Popular K-Pop boy groups include BTS, EXO, GOT7, NCT, SEVENTEEN, and MONSTA X.
When groups perform, fans like to record it while only focusing on one particular member throughout the show. These are known as “fancams” and are uploaded to platforms like YouTube so fans of the group can enjoy watching their favorite member.
Girl Groups Girl groups are just as popular now, as boy groups. Their members generally range from 4-12. Unlike boy groups, companies tend to restrict the type of “concepts” girl groups do to either “cute” or “girl crush” (edgy and dark). However, this has improved in recent years. Popular K-Pop girl groups include BLACKPINK, Red Velvet, TWICE, Girl’s Generation, (G)I-DLE, LOONA, and EXID.
