What is Active Minds? Active Minds at ASU is a student organization that aims to reduce the stigma that surrounds mental health issues and promote awareness of mental health. Through campus wide events the organization works to inform students and faculty of available services both on campus and in the community. The organization creates a forum for students and members of the community to have an open discussion regarding mental health issues.

Our Mission Active Minds was founded by Alison Malcom when she was a junior at UPENN after the suicide of her older brother, Brian. Alison recognized that Brian’s story is the story of thousands of young people who suffer in silence; who, despite their large numbers, think they are totally alone. A majority of mental illnesses start between ages 14 and 24 when teens and young adults are in school, and suicide is the second

leading cause of death for college students. The mission of Active Minds is to spread awareness of mental health and important resources for people living with mental illness.

ASU Annual Mental Health Conference ASU held its second annual Mental Health conference on February 26th, 2019. The event was organized and promoted by ASU’s chapter of Active Minds and featured 8 speakers who spoke out about their own experiences with mental health and what we can do to combat the stigma. Many even promoted and raised awareness for organizations aimed at providing resources for those living with mental illnesses and their families.

Send Silence Packing Send Silence Packing is an Active Minds sponsored touring display of backpacks representing students who have tragically taken their own lives. The backpacks are accompanied by personal testimonies of people who have lost a loved one to suicide. Arizona State University will be hosting Send Silence Packing on March 25th, 2019.
