A note for visitors: We’re thankful that you could join us for worship today, and we pray God blesses you in your time here. The service is printed in your bulletin. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to ask someone around you! St. Francis Church wants to encourage families to worship together. In order to be a community where all ages feel welcome, we provide coloring materials for children to use during worship and seek to be a community that understands the specific gifts and challenges that children bring. We encourage you, should you feel comfortable doing so, to sit toward the front with your children, as little-ones are often more attentive if they can see what is happening. That being said, we understand that there may be times when it is best to take advantage of child care, which we have available in the room immediately through the Kitchen off of the entryway. In a prayer, the priest Ezra tells of God’s love and faithfulness for his people, even when they are faithless and turn away from him. A reading from the Book of the Prophet Nehemiah: Ezra blessed the Lord and said, “But they and our fathers acted presumptuously and stiffened their neck and did not obey your commandments. They refused to obey and were not mindful of the wonders that you performed among them, but they stiffened their neck and appointed a leader to return to their slavery in Egypt. But you are a God ready to forgive, gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and did not forsake them. Paul declares with confidence that nothing can separate us from God’s love if we trust in God as revealed in Jesus Christ. A Reading from Paul’s letter to the Church in Rome. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword? As it is written, “For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered.” No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. We

believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. ON RECEIVING COMMUNION: All baptized Christians who are in love and charity with their neighbors are welcome to receive communion. If you do not wish to receive, you are invited to come for a prayer of blessing—simply cross your arms over your chest to let the servers know that you will not be receiving. Celebrant says the dismissal People: Thanks be to God. A Note on Today’s Readings Proper 13, Year A Welcome to St. Francis Church. Church. Throughout the Bible God uses food as a primary means of calling the people together and of revealing the divine presence to them. Today we have Matthew’s account of the feeding of the 5,000. For early Christians this account’s importance lay not so much in the miraculous multiplying of the loaves and fishes as in its resemblance to the Eucharist, their own way—and ours—of experiencing Jesus’ continuing presence in their midst. In the first reading, the Jewish leader Ezra remembers God’s unswerving love for Israel. Even though the people in the exodus rebelled against God, God continued to care for them, to lead them, and to feed them. The second reading today brings us to a point in Paul’s letter to Rome in which his extended discourse on grace and faith leads him into an outburst of praise which is one of the most stirring expressions of faith in the scriptures. Religious meals are one of the universal expressions of human religion. All the insights of God’s long love affair with humanity are summed up in these meals. Given deeper and fuller meaning by the Passover of Israel and finally used by Jesus to interpret the meaning of his death and resurrection, the Eucharist becomes for us the fullest and most complete revelation of God’s love and of his salvation.
