PROJECT ANDREW
YOUNG ADULT CELLS SEPTEMBER 2006
PROJECT ANDREW I. Introduction Of all the apostles of Christ, Andrew was not the most well-known. Our knowledge of him is very limited. In fact, there were only 14 occurrences of his name in 13 verses in the entire Bible. The thing that he was most famous for was that he was Simon Peter’s brother. How do you think it must have been for Andrew to always live under the shadow of his elder brother, Simon Peter?
However, in the Fourth Gospel (Gospel of John), we gain a clearer picture of his character from 3 scenes. A common element in them all is that he plays the role of an intermediary, firstly, bringing his brother Simon to Jesus, then the lad with the 5 loaves and 2 fishes, and finally the Greeks who sought an audience with Jesus at the last feast of Passover. Thus, we see Andrew was consistent in fulfilling the role of a soul-winner, as someone who bring others to Christ. Today, we will look very quickly at these 3 passages and learn from the example of Andrew.
II.
Andrew brought his brother to Jesus
Read John 1:35-42
Andrew was a disciple of John the Baptist. What do you think were the reasons for him to follow Jesus?
From his conversation with Jesus, what can you gather about Andrew’s character?
The first thing Andrew did was to bring his brother, Peter to Jesus. Without Andrew, there may never be a Peter. What can you learn from the way in which Andrew became the first evangelist?
III. Andrew Brought a Boy to Jesus Read John 6:5-8
There were different solutions to solve the problem of the hungry people. Some disciples suggested sending them away, while Philips looked into raising funds to buy food. How do you think Andrew was different from the other disciples?
What lessons can you learn from the example of Andrew bringing the little boy and his small lunch to Jesus?
Member’s Notes Objective: At the end of this lesson, you will be able to: 1. Know 3 occasions in which Andrew brought someone to Jesus. 2. Desire to bring someone to Jesus.
3.
Participate in the planning and execution of the Evangelistic Cell Meeting (ECM).
35 The next day John was there again with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!” 37 When the two disciples heard him say this, they followed Jesus. 38 Turning around, Jesus saw them following and asked, “What do you want?” They said, “Rabbi” (which means Teacher), “where are you staying?” 39 “Come,” he replied, “and you will see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and spent that day with him. It was about the tenth hour. 40 Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, was one of the two who heard what John had said and who had followed Jesus. 41 The first thing Andrew did was to find his brother Simon and tell him, “We have found the Messiah” (that is, the Christ). 42 And he brought him to Jesus. Jesus looked at him and said, “You are Simon son of John. You will be called Cephas” (which, when translated, is Peter). John 1:35-42 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip, “Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6 He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “Eight months’ wages would not buy enough bread for each one to have a bite!” 8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother, spoke up, 9 “Here is a boy with five small barley loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among so many?” Member’s Notes Page 1 of 3

IV. Andrew Brought the Greeks to Jesus Read John 12:2-26
The Greeks were God-fears who sought an audience with Jesus. We were not told why they came, but they first approached Philip. Philip approached Andrew. What does this tell us about Andrew’s relationship with others?
Andrew made the decision to bring them to Jesus. What does this tell us about Andrew’s relationship with Jesus?
20 Now there were some Greeks among those who went up to worship at the Feast. 21 They came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, with a request. “Sir,” they said, “we would like to see Jesus.” 22 Philip went to tell Andrew; Andrew and Philip in turn told Jesus. John 12:20-21
To facilitate this, we will do the following:
It is the “Andrews” of the world who bring the “Peters”. It is the “Andrews” of the world who bring the little ones. And, it is the “Andrews” of this world who bring the outsiders and the seekers. Will you be an “Andrew” to someone?
