Just like water we drink & the air we breath, food is very basic requirement of life

Without the proper daily intake of right type of food, different organs of our body can not function as they should

Some facts… • More than a million pounds of beef recalled and destroyed • One child dead and others sick from drinking fresh juice • In Milwaukee, 400,000 people sick with diarrhea and vomiting • 35% of residents in a nursing home sick with salmonellosis and 4 die “Food Contamination and Safety” by P. V. Patil

Demographics • The proportion of the population at serious risk of food borne illness is increasing with : The aging The weakened immune system

Hence, often eat meals on the run

Food Production • In the past, food used to be grown, produced and distributed on a local basis • Now, its centralized and the products produced are shipped all over the country • Example : Schwan’s ice cream in 1994 caused 224,000 people ill in New England

Cont… • A large number of animals are often crowded together • This increase their stress levels and weakens their immune system • Crowding also facilitates the spread of disease from one animal to another “Food Contamination and Safety” by P. V. Patil
