Quickdraw – Short a
Teacher‛s Notes Type of activity
Listening
Objective
To help students practice listening for the short a vowel sound in a fun and tactile way. To review the seven short a sounds in Speak Right Read Right Kit One.
Materials
Worksheet, scissors.
Preparation
Make copies of the worksheet, one per student.
Time
Ten - fifteen minutes.
Procedure
1. Give one copy of the worksheet to each student. 2. Each student must cut out their short a sounds and consonant cards. 3. Start slowly, by making real words using a consonant and a short a sound. The students must find the word and put them together. The first student to make the word gets one point.
Variation
1. You could also say 4 consonants and two short a vowel sounds and see who can make the most real words from those combinations. 2. If you have finished teaching the short a sound, then these cards will work well as a fun test. As the teacher says the word, the students will take them and glue them in to their workbook.
