Return Of The Newsletter

B Y H ELEN F LOYD

the first newsletter you will have received in a few months. The hiatus of our musings was not necessarily planned– but did get the better of us over the Summer. You will notice the newsletter has a little different look. We have gone to black and white ( and gray) printing and are still looking at printer/mailer options.

you don’t see exactly what you want? We have a large collection of our precious essential oils of different kinds– ask and we may have it or can get it for you!

We have some things to catch up on! Our Summer was so wet and chilly that it was a wonder any of our heirloom tomatoes did actually ripen– but a few did and MY favorite winner is the Pink tomato! We were able to harvest 3 and 4 pound fruits from very tall plants and they were wonderful! With the lack of heat and sun– I found myself actually giving daily pep talks to zucchini and squash to get them to grow– and we all know that is just NOT right. With some seeds put by for next year, I have set my hopes on a larger and more successful crop next year.

Coming Soon we have our very first Winter Festival Event planned for December 12 here at our location in building B suite 940. It will go from 10:00 Am to 5:00 PM that day and will be a multi-vendor event with product sales, Snacks, Tea and talks and demonstrations going on throughout the day. At this event ONLY– we will have our one hour gift certificates available for an unprecedented 15% off! We have the great fortune to have dance routine demonstrations coordinated by our local dance teacher Shahina . You may check her website at www.shahina.com.

We have added some new products to our office and will be getting in some Fall and holiday scented soy candles by Just Basic Candles soon. CurrentlyThe last of our Summer scents are all 20% off– Please give the last of them a home!

December 20 is the Winter Solstice Reiki Healing Attunement Event . We will highlight more about the practice of Reiki in future newsletters, including its origins, benefits and modern associations.

OUR NOVEMBER SPECIALS:

HOME MADE Honey Lemon Cough Syrup

Highlight on Essential Oils; Cold and Flu Aids

Hot Stone Massage

Lemon helps promote health by quickly alkalinizing your body, and honey will kill any bacteria. This is a perfect choice for a quick cough remedy.

Just in time for the cold weather! This is a relaxing and grounding massage that uses hot Basalt stones heated in water to do the massage. We suggest a 90 minute session to get the most from this experience. $ 10.00 off

Put a pint of raw honey in a pan on the stove on VERY low heat (Do not boil honey as this changes its medicinal properties) . Take a whole lemon and boil in some water in a separate pan for 2-3 minutes to both soften the lemon and kill any bacteria that may be on the lemon skin. Let the lemon cool enough to handle then cut it in slices and add it to the pint of honey on the stove.

Abhyanga-Garshana (Hydrating Skin treatment) An ancient Ayurveda treatment that exfoliates the entire body with raw silk gloves and hydrates the skin with moisturizing and detoxifying oils . An optional short facial massage is included in this treatment. Normally $65.00 for 1 hour $ 10.00 off

Let mixture cook on warm heat for about an hour. Then strain the lemon from the honey making sure all lemon seeds are removed.

From the Garden

Let cool, then bottle in a jar with a lid and store in the refrigerator. This syrup will keep for 2 months in the refrigerator. To soothe a cough, take 1/2 teaspoon for a 25 lb. child and 1 teaspoon for a 50 lb. child, about 4 times a day, or as often as needed. Adults can take 1 tablespoon doses.

We have a limited quantity of herbal infused virgin olive oil with Herbs grown this year from the garden. ( some of these herbs also go into our soap) infused with various mixtures of—Lavender flowers, Rosemary, Thyme, peppercorns and Garlic.

Vanilla infused Virgin Olive oil also available.

Limited amounts massage oil pump bottles with our Cocajoba oil mix and infused with our own fresh lavender flowers and rosemary.

Over the past months. We reviewed very useful essential oils and their properties This time, It is appropriate to highlight the use of some combinations of these oils for your continued health specifically for cold and Flu symptoms– and as a preventative. We wrote about LAVENDER essential oil, TEA TREE essential oil and its immune system boosting abilities, EUCALYPTUS (var radiata especially) and its ability to target the respiratory system and reduce mucous and fluids. To this list we now add THYME essential oil– yes the common thyme you use for cooking. Thyme oil is beneficial to boost the immune system and can help fight colds, flu, infectious diseases and chills. Here's a blend you can mix up as a cold and flu remedy to help keep you healthy during the cold and flu season. Flu-busting Blend Essential oil eucalyptus-2 parts Essential oil tea tree-2 parts Essential oil lavender-2 parts Essential oil thyme-1 part The easiest and most effective way to use your Flu Busting blend is to diffuse it in your home or workplace using an electronic diffuser. Start using your cold & flu buster blend at the first hint of illness, especially if people around you are sick. Prevention is the cheapest and most effective form of health care. If you travel or work in crowded places, you can sniff your Flu- busting blend from a personal inhaler or a tissue. This very effective practice goes back for centuries . Continued on page 3:

Continuation of Essential Oil blends for Flu and Colds: Some of you may be unfamiliar with the use of Essential oils in blends; how to mix and how much to use. Essential oils are potent and helpful plant extracts. They are to be used in dilution, with the exception of some oils ( such as lavender, tea tree and peppermint among others)—which may be used NEET or undiluted. In making a mixture, such as the recipe we’ve given you, a “part” may consist of a drop , a teaspoon or an ounce, as long as the ratios given are observed. Only a few drops of your mix are used at a time. In a steam or vapor inhalation method– a quart of hot water to two or three drops of the blend should be used with a towel over one’s head to make a steam tent. Breathe for 3 to 5 minutes. To make a room spray– use 8 ounces distilled water to 15 to 20 drops of your blend. Spray in each room that will be occupied. One of my favorite methods is to heat a pot of water on the stove (about 2 quarts) and add 7 or 8 drops to the steaming water and let it “vaporize” in the surrounding area. For an extra boost— you may consider adding one part peppermint ( remember it enhances the effect of other oils) and /or 1 part Oregano essential oil. Yes– it will smell like an interesting pizza– but will be ever so much more effective for your cold!

We also have the Flu buster Blend ready made for you at our office!

New Research on Honey Health Benefits ( Courtesy of the Organic Consumers Newsletter) Today, research undertaken by Dr. Shona Blair at Sydney University's School of Molecular and Microbial Biosciences, has now shown the unusual antibacterial activity of honey, leading to a greater understanding of the ability of honey to kill pathogenic bacteria through several different mechanisms. In studies, honey was effective against many different drug resistant bacteria. In one scientific test, Dr. Shona Blair used honey to treat E. coli. Dr. Shona Blair saw that honey "attacks" bacteria from several different angles; that the bacteria were overwhelmed and unable to develop resistance, and the bacteria died. In today's world where many antibiotics have become ineffective, honey was able to kill not only the E. coli, but many other types of bacteria. Honey not only possesses significant antibacterial activity, it has also been shown to actively promote healing by directly stimulating human cells that are important in the immune response to help disease and wounds healing.
