Joan Taylor ’s Ten Pin Rap.... This week I had one of the most interesting interviews with a local bowler. It seems that I caught Walt Taormina, 52, Oak Ridge, as he was packing to move to the Atlanta, Georgia area. Knowing he wanted to sell his house and move to a warmer, golf-related area, he has subbed in leagues this year. He had quit bowling for 14 years, in part due to an injury, and in part because of his love for the game of golf. He won the Morris County Amateur (golf) championship in 2004 and again in 2008. But he wanted to get back into bowling. Because of pain in Walt’s ring finger, Ken Yokobosky at Pro Image Pro Shop at Rockaway Lanes worked with him and drilled a 14-pound ball to experiment with his game. The first night, he shot a 300 game, his fourth sanctioned overall. “My first 300 was at Paramus Lanes in 1979, so it was 30 years from my first to my fourth.” He was blown away by the new equipment, to say the least. He was pleased that the bowling centers are all nonsmoking now. “One of the other reasons I quit was because of all the smoke.” His series was 247-222-300 for 769. He would like to see an 800 series, having posted a 799. He owns a remodeling business, which will follow him to Georgia and his new big house (with much lower taxes). Congratulations on all fronts!

George Verhoest, Mine Hill, rolled a 299 in the Lake Hiawatha Men’s League, having left a 3-pin. He enjoys one league per week, averaging 202. His highest sanctioned series to date was 790, so he would like to see an 800 someday. \ Thursday, November 19: Professional bowling will be a central plot element in an episode of the highly-rated “CSI” which is scheduled to air on CBS at 9 p.m. Eastern time. During the episode, the CSI team attempts to solve the mystery of who committed the murder. Sunday, December 6: the 57th Annual League Officers’ Doubles Tournament, Plaza Lanes. The Bowling Foundation to Dissolve Board New Directors Will Seek To Redefine The Foundation's Mission and Vision. ARLINGTON, Texas - The Bowling Foundation (TBF) board of directors voted to dissolve the current structure effective December 31, 2009. TBF's executive director Troy Greisen stepped down immediately following the vote. Program coordinator Jennifer Lee will remain as a paid staff member. The board cited a difficult economy and the need to become a more effective and efficient organization as a reason for its action. A new board consisting of BPAA Executive Director Steve Johnson, USBC Executive Director Stu Upson, Bowlers To Veterans Link Administrator Elizabeth Montanya, International Bowling Museum and Hall of Fame Executive Director Bill Supper and a person to be appointed who will represent the interests of TBF partner Susan G. Komen Bowl For The Cure, will seek to redefine the foundation's mission and vision. The decision was reached after hours of discussion that focused on how best The Bowling Foundation can serve the bowling industry in light of the current economy. The board conceded its current volunteer structure with a paid executive director was not the most efficient model and agreed on the need to establish a new organization best suited to help established foundation partners such as Bowlers To Veterans Link and Susan G. Komen Bowl For The Cure. The foundation will continue its fund-raising efforts with any funds received and all monies already raised by TBF to be given as a grant to further the sport, particularly in the area of youth bowling. The decision will not affect the Flowers For The Living Award presented annually at Bowl Expo.

What

?

Remembering John "Junior" Powell is so easy because rarely has there been such a bowling man for all seasons. He was a battle hardened combat marine before he was old enough to vote and later he combined that hard earned toughness with the love of life, people, and bowling that only ended when he was 84. A top bowler who loved competitive action in any form, whether he was betting a dinner on the outcome of a bowling match, the run of one of his race horses, the prospects of a new product or business venture including many bowling centers, he was a delight to know. You always knew he was there because he wasn't bashful when he had an opinion---and he always had an opinion. Powell was a pioneer in many bowling efforts, starting with his rating as one of the best scorers in the game, then as solid leader of the Fort Worth Panthers in the shaky National Bowling League, on to one of the most innovative tournament creators and operators, a bowling pro shop owner when there were few pros in the field, and an unmatched booster of worthy, new bowling products. "I can sell a dozen of anything." Junior once told me. He got no argument from me because he kept proving it. Later he got into the big, big time of business interests such as race horses among the world's best, restaurants, and the most up to date and finely run bowling centers that bore the name of backing and input of the legendary Don Carter.

He was the first to offer his talent and treasure to any worthy bowling cause—institutional or personal. At one time Powell was one of the keen minds who helped design a plan whereby the PBA would build bowling complexes in each of the PBA's then seven regions. Each would contains a bowling tournament section that also could be used for regular open play, clinics, seminars and constructed to perfectly house TV and other media and communications. The complex would also include up to date pro shops, restaurants and possibly space for other entertainments and business. And most of the positions could be filled by the then current or former bowling pros, giving them more opportunities than ever before. Unfortunately, a law suit filed by some of the players put a halt to the plans and a revival time never came again, but Powell's .effort and genius was evident to all. One of his greatest personal moments came when he was elected to the American Bowling Congress Hall of Fame. It was one of the most well deserved selections and one of the most appreciated by any recipient of the honor. He long was an avid supporter of the Hall and its members, many of them close friends and attended all Hall functions until he became too ill to do so. He was a proud member of the Hall---but not as proud as the Hall and the sport were of him---the man of all bowling seasons who now has become a man of all bowling eternity.

Landau Twins, Andresen, Rollins Hot at Holiday By Vince Albrecht Oakland, NJ – Nothing like a pin-friendly house to snap fine young bowlers from earlier below-average outings in the Stan Niemiec Youth Travel League. Holiday Bowl provided the venue for the strong comebacks of all seven “600+” performers in Sunday afternoon’s matchups. Ryan Landau led the onslaught with 246-236-693 while his brother Kyle added 257-225-677. Even so, their combined efforts weren’t enough to keep Holiday Bowl II from dropping two close games to Fair Lawn II, largely due to 13-year-old Jake Rollins’ explosive 257 in the finale. Jake, who added a 219 as part of his 654 threesome, had ample support from anchor Jaylin Floyd’s 235-618. Elsewhere, having acknowledged that he had somewhat been in a funk the first three weeks, 17-year-old Rob Andresen capped a 681 set with the day’s best single, a 269; only a buried tenth frame “stone 7-pin” kept Rob from possibly going “out the door” with a 290. Teammates’ Rachel Kammen and Kevin Macchia came through with 199 and 192 respectively as Holiday I earned seven points for its first match win of the season. Isiah Tolbert had a 208 and 14-year-old Deandre Lightly bounced back with a 210 as Fair Lawn I leapfrogged from fourth to first place by sweeping Bowler City whose best came from Ray Geller 225,202 and Stacy Fernandez 213. Rounding out the afternoon’s action, Montvale II came from behind to stop rival Montvale I, 5-2. Leading the victors was 14-year-old Bobby McCarthy totaling 231,201-613, young Matt Hauser adding 208 and anchor Bryan Kist a 202. Montvale I had stellar efforts from Ryan Cauwels 228-201-620 and Brian Galbraith 247-590. When the smoke cleared at Holiday, fourteen bowlers had combined for 22 deuces, significantly changing the high score leader-board.
