Bill O'Neill Breaks PABCON Record Winning Singles Gold Diandra Asbaty took the women's silver

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico Competing as a Team USA member for the first time, Bill O'Neill put on a record-breaking performance in winning the singles gold medal at the 2009 Pan American Bowling Confederation Championships. O'Neill totaled 1,475 for six games, an average of nearly 246, to win the opening event at Carolina Bowling Center. He had games of 229, 204, 238, 279, 246 and 279 on the day's opening squad and broke the previous record of 1,428, which was set in 2001 by Canada's Danyck Briere. "This is all pretty interesting to me because I didn't expect it," said O'Neill, who was added to Team USA in January by the coaching staff after a strong performance on the Professional Bowlers Association Tour. "I just wanted to come out and bowl well to make the coaches feel like they made a good decision by picking me." O'Neill said he entered the event with modest expectations, hoping just to get his feet wet in his first international tournament as a member of Team USA.

"I really didn't plan on winning the first event," O'Neill said. "But hopefully this is a sign of things to come for the rest of the week." Team USA earned two other medals in singles as Diandra Asbaty took the women's silver medal with 1,355, and David Haynes earned the men's bronze with 1,388. “Having hosted regional tournaments at Rockaway Lanes, I know the work that goes into it. I give Carol Alison at Leisure Lanes all the credit in the world. We were treated very well there. I also have to thank Dr. Eric Lasser (author and sports psychologist) for teaching me the mental game. That’s probably why I was relaxed during the bowling and so emotional when it was over.” Ken has coached many people who have gone on to win regional titles, and it was now his turn. “I told (tournament director) Russ Mills ten years ago that when I get my title and he orders my banner (to hang over the lanes at each regional tournament), I want it to be Yankee pinstripes.” And for this diehard Yankees fan and extraordinary bowler and coach, it will be done. I bet he can’t wait to bowl in his next regional next year just to see that banner. Ken and Lori have two sons, Jake, 7 and Luke, 5. Yokobosky owns Pro Image Bowling (pro shops) in Rockaway and Sparta in addition to running the Bowling Camp and coaching individuals. “When I got home with the trophy the boys came running out to the car, saying ‘Daddy, you are a champion.’ Yes, finally. I did it

for my family, but also for the fact that it was never about the trophy or money. From the time I watched bowling on television on Saturdays I wanted to win a PBA title.” Congratulations, Ken! Even Derek Jeter would be impressed! Editor’s note: Both Ken’s Leisure wins, even though twenty-six years apart, have made the front page of the Sports Reporter. Ken told us,“I grew up in Leisure Lanes in Fairfield. My late grandfather Ben ‘Benny the Whip’ Cresci, would collect the Sports Reporter whenever my name was in it. I won my first junior title there in August of 1981. He brought home a stack. Since then whenever my name appears in the Sports Reporter, my thoughts are immediately of ‘The Whip.” He went on to tell us, “Now my first PBA title also comes in Leisure Lanes, but in Lancaster PA. The title match was on 3940. Ironically that was the number of lanes that Leisure Lanes in Fairfield had. I know he is looking down with a smile on his face.” Ken in honor of “The Whip” we’re sending you a stack.

FINAL FRAME Dick Hoover ARLINGTON, Texas - Dick Hoover, a United States Bowling Congress Hall of Famer and a founding member of the Professional Bowlers Association, in Akron, Ohio, at age 79. Hoover made his ability apparent at an early age, having an 847 series at age 16, the highest series by a teenager at the time. In 1950, he became the youngest to win the All Star Tournament, capturing the title the day after his 21st birthday. The 1974 American Bowling Congress Hall of Fame inductee was the first and one of only two men to capture two consecutive ABC Masters titles, winning in 1956 and 1957. He also won three titles in ABC Tournament Classic division play. He was the man credited with planting the seed of an idea that led to the creation of the PBA. He was a guest on a radio show hosted by Akron attorney Eddie Elias shortly after winning his second Masters title and explained to Elias that there was no professional "league" available to bowlers. Some say that conversation prompted Elias to pursue the idea of rallying bowlers to join a professional tournament organization. Hoover later moved to St. Louis for a time to bowl anchor for the Falstaffs, a team that included fellow USBC Hall of Famers Billy Welu, Harry Smith and Glenn Allison. He helped the Falstaffs with the ABC Tournament Classic Team title in 1964, and he teamed with Allison to win Classic Doubles in 1962 - the year he also won his only standard PBA Tour title in Baltimore. In addition to his two titles, Hoover finished second once, third twice and fifth in other Masters, and in addition to three ABC Classic Division titles, he had nine other ABC Championships top 10 finishes. Hoover owned and operated Dick Hoover's Lanes in Brunswick. He was married (Joan) with two sons and two daughters.

Idle bowling thoughts. ...Bowling lost one of its alltime greats with the passing of Dick Hoover at 79. Hoover was a boy wonder, winning the AllStar, now the U.S. Open, when he was just 21. He also won the ABC Masters in 1956 and 1957, rolled with the best teams in history, and was a feared head to head match play bowler. Hoover has to rate as one of the most accurate bowlers of all-time. He seldom missed the pocket, regardless of lane conditions, and not only was he a super split shooter but a man who rolled to make the almost impossible leaves such as the 8-10 and 7-10, and did so more than most, using his speed and power to bounce the pins from kickback, gutter or across the lane with exciting and frequent success. But Hoover will also be remembered as the man who appeared on an Akron based TV show hosted by a popular young attorney. Their interview and later input from from other top stars inspired the TV personality to create, found, and lead to the huge success of the Professional bowlers Association. That man's name was Eddie Elias. Hoover was an easy selection to the ABC Hall of Fame. Maybe it's time to honor his all around contributions to pro bowling with election to the PBA Hall of Fame ...Each year a number of fine bowlers who never joined the PBA for personal, family or financial reasons turn 50 years of age, and become senior pro bowlers. That's why every year there is a mixture of fabled Hall of Famers competing on the Senior Pro Tour right next to bowlers whose names are unknown to almost all but their local area bowlers

and fans. ...Aren't you glad that bowling doesn't have screamers in women's major competitions such as the growing number so evident on the women's tennis tour? ...I know one female bowler who told me that in selecting bowling uniforms most of the fashion is based on what doesn't itch. ...The economy has hurt the number of entries in many tournaments, but the annual USBC men's and women's events have more than held up well. For most bowlers, these are must stops, and tradition plays an important role. Pride and tradition and the chance to be a champion should also be touted to improve sagging sentries in local and state events throughout the nation. ...The late Chris Schenkel figured he had broadcast every sport but hockey and noted that bowling was the most consistent friend he had. "There are few snobs in bowling and it is something I could do for a long, long time." he was right. He was a voice of bowling for more than 40 years. And his sentiments have been echoed by dozens of famed announcers over the years. ...A polite bowler is one who listens with apparent interest to things he knows all about being told him by a bowler who knows very little about them. ...Two of the smoothest bowlers in the history of the sport were Joe Joseph and Tom Hennessey. They approached the foul line with all the grace and balance of dancing legend Fred Astaire. There was one difference though; they carried fairly heavy bowling balls, not a hat or cane.

"Often, the most extraordinary opportunities are hidden among the seemingly insignificant events of life. If we do not pay attention to these events, we can easily miss the opportunities." -Jim Rohn

READ BETWEEN THE LANES By Dick Evans

Cheer Against The Cowboys You need to start cheering for the Dallas Cowboys to lose NFL games if you are thinking about going to the BPAA Bowling Summit in Arlington January 24-27 and attending the grand opening of the nternational Bowling Museum & Hall of Fame Jan. 25 at the International Bowling Campus. I say this because the National Football League's post-season playoff games will extend until January 24 next year. That will be the date of the National and American Conference playoff games. It would be OK for the Cowboys to make the NFC playoffs if these two things don't happen. 1. The Cowboys do not finish with the best record in the NFC, which would guarantee them home-field advantage as long as they beat their NFC playoff rivals. 2. The Cowboys don't finish with the second best record in the NFC, win their first playoff game while the top-seeded NFC team loses its opening playoff game. 3. The Cowboys wind up with the best record of the two teams making the NFC championship game.

In all those scenarios, the Cowboys could wind up the NFC's host team in Arlington January 24, which is located a little more than a mile away from the International Bowling Campus. And even if the Cowboys were to lose, the NFC game would probably eliminate any publicity the BPAA and USBC hope to derive from the opening of the Museum and the Summit. So I say for the sake of the Summit and Museum's opening that the Cowboys should avoid the playoffs completely. If the Cowboys make it to the NFC championship game in their gorgeous new stadium then Arlington will be one football crazy area January 23-24 and even on the morning of January 25 and motel, rental cars, meals and air-fares will be sky high. So I suggest if you are planning a January bowling trip to Arlington, that you make your reservations as soon as possible just in case the Cowboys make it to the NFC championship game. Just for the record, I revealed my NFL playoff discovery to John Berglund and Bill Supper a few weeks ago in case they were not aware of the possible overlap of events in Arlington. Go Giants. Joan Taylor ’s Ten Pin Rap.... If you want to see something neat, go to www.bowl.com and click on “Newswire.” There’s a beautiful picture of Morris County’s living legend, Emma P. Hendrickson flanked by Regis (Philbin) and Kelly (Ripa) with a link to check out the video of her historic appearance on their show and at a New York City bowling center. Along the right side of the site is a link to an article and another photo about her TV debut. Emma bowled in her 50th consecutive national women’s tournament in El Paso this year and received accolades there as well. **************** It has been a year of firsts for many people, including Bill O’Neill, Levittown, PA, who won his first PBA title during the World Series of Bowling in Detroit. It certainly wasn’t his first international title, but area bowler Tim Mack, son of Morris County WBA Hall of Famer Joan Mack (Hough) won the Samho Korea Cup in Inchon, Korea in a dramatic final match. He defeated Korean Kim Yoon Ho, 237-232 in their televised final match. Here’s a good lesson in never giving up, especially in match play. Mack opened in his third frame while Ho, a Korean professional bowler, posted three strikes to start the match. Tim then rolled three strikes of his own, but the Korean did the same. He stuck with it and struck out from the eighth frame on, overcoming a 31-pin deficit. His opponent opened in the ninth frame. Mack’s last Asian victory was in 2003, so this was an especially sweet victory. Tim has also come off some serious shoulder injuries and surgeries and extensive physical therapy to come back to victory lane. He earned a little more than $24,000 American for his win. This month he is again captaining the Weber Cup Team, a tournament with several formats in which the top Americans are pitted against top Europeans in a grueling three-day contest. Earlier this year, Mack qualified for the 2009-2010 Professional Bowlers’ Association’s exempt tour. Hopefully this year will also mark Tim’s first pro title.

Nick Gavron, Will Blanco Pace North Arlington Juniors North Arlington, NJ – Nick Gavron rolled three deuces, scoring 623 and Will Blanco 213-613 in Friday evening’s Adult-Junior league play at North Arlington. After a uncharacteristic dismal opening week for him, Nick bounced back this session with gusto, leading his S.A.S. team to a sweep of the Jimmy Lee Sr/Jonathan Lee entry. Will Blanco, who scorched the maples last week with 647, continued scoring well, albeit not enough to keep his Cardinals from dropping a 5-2 match to the Fonsecas as nine-year-old Nicole

rolled over average all three of her games. In other action, young Margaret Ziobro had two over average efforts as Team Awesome turned back the Mighty Chipmunks, 5-2 while Juicy, led by eleven-yearold Chris McBride, took two of three from the A Team. The Bantam Juniors over average were Nicole Fonseca +38, Chris McBride +26, Margaret Ziobro +23 and Sam Passaro +12. Highs among the adults included Tim Bray 215-607, Art Arrigo 201 and Fran Sanzo 199.

Brian Sanders is Parkway Lanes King of the Hill ELMWOOD PARK, NJ - The last King of the Hill event for the summer at Parkway Lanes had 45 bowlers show up to vie for the title. The top 12 were led by Derrick Griffith with a 784 and the cut was 733. The others who advanced were Dwight Flowers, Carlos, Georgette Hill, Rocky Patterson, Rene Ruiz, Jen Mccaffrey, Jules(older then dirt) Lockawicz, Marie Lippman, Steve Cox, Mike Viola, and Kiron Dunkins. The 6 who moved onto to the quarter finals were Derrick, Carlos , Dwight, Rene, Marie, and old guy.The 3 winners who moved on to the stepladder were, Dwight, Carlos, and Derrick. 6 Dear Bowling Family, First, an update: Mark is home, and working hard at rehab. He is holding his own, and on a good day can walk approximately 300 feet at a time. (with the assistance of a tripod walking device) He uses an ankle brace for his left ankle to hold his foot in place as he walks. (He still has little or no use of his left ankle- without the brace it is difficult to walk) Nothing more with his left arm/hand as yet...small movements at best; but every little movement - is a wonderful thing! It truly is the small things in life that count the most. Time has passed by so quickly. It is almost Fall; just the other day (Mary 31st) it seemed we were waiting for Summer. Mark was still enjoying and talking about the ceremony in which he was inducted into the USBC Hall of Fame in Reno - the first part of May. We were all packed for the Vegas tournament which we ultimately didn't make. It's a strange feeling to be seeing fall items in the stores because we can't really remember summer this year... It's a vague memory. Every day & night the past few months were spent in the hospital or rehab with Mark - and for the life of me- thinking back - when I did go home during that time, I couldn't tell you what the weather was like on any given day. Summer 2009 has gotten away from us, but we look towards the up coming seasons with much hope of brighter tomorrows. At certain times during this past few months we would wonder, ‘is this just a bad dream? or is this real?’ - then leaving that thought behind - because it was too mindboggling to try and come to the harsh reality of what this would actually mean long term. We had enough to do with just getting through each day. We were going through the motions, but putting the emotions aside until we were in a better place to be able to face them. We had to do what we had to do at the time. Mark was so physically weak, but trying so very hard to move his left side (with everything he had) for even the slightest of movements; being wheeled in and out for yet and still another test, and trying to find something he could eat as the stroke affected his swallowing. He could only eat mechanical soft foods for the first month. No fries! No burgers!... just thickened liquids. Everyone who knows Mark knows how much he loves his fries - and how difficult the "no fries" period had to have been for him . . . (lol). Needless to say he lost 15 lbs. very quickly! (but has managed to regain a few pounds to date) As for me - I was tired - very hurtand sad to see Mark in such a bad place, I had many conversations with God . . . still do. I stayed in“ shock mode,” and did what I could to support Mark and make him comfortable. However, a couple of weeks ago, the shock of it all wore off, and reality hit! Mark was released from inpatient rehab and came home. Reality hit us square in the face... this is real! We were scared -what now? - Can we do this? Life as we knew it had forever changed; things will never be the same. A few days into being home- the flood gates opened up even to hear the guys were back out on the summer tour and just knowing that Mark may never ever be able to be out there bowling again - was a very painful reality. It seemed unbearable. But moving forward - Mark continues with such determination, and moves through his difficult days like the Champ that he is. At 58, Mark is too young not to have a chance at continued rehab, and to try to make as

SPORTS REPORTER much of a recovery as he possibly can. He is committed, and is amazingly determined as only Mark Roth would be. He'll need rehab for the rest of his life - Rehab he wouldn't be able to continue if it weren't for all of your help. Thank you for all of the tournaments that have already taken place, and for all of the up- coming tournaments. Thanks for coming together to help give Mark a fighting chance. Although we have many, many, many more miles in our journey, we are very thankful for the progress Mark has

made. We are so very thankful for our friends, the entire Bowling community, (Mark's extended family for 40 years) family, and fans . . . without them we wouldn't have the strength and help we need to carry on. The song "Carry on" by Kansas - Mark's song to help him get pumped up before bowling when he was out on Tour; the same song that was played for him at the USBC Hall of Fame Induction this past May. And every time his cell phone rings - it's sings out "Carry on my way ward son -there will be peace when you are done." His song has taken on new meaning today." We have So many thank you's to go out. . .we've sent many. . .but have so many people yet to thank. Some people we don't even know how to reach. And, how do you say thank you when thank you just doesn't seem like enough? We'd like to thank some CLOSE and very SPECIAL FRIENDS - Lifelong friends Johnny Petraglia, Parker Bohn, Judy Soutar, Kurt Harz, Bobby Rogers, Chris Monroy, Ray

Helen Duval Scholarship Club Donates $10,000 to BVL In a fitting tribute to Helen Duval, bowling great and Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL) Ambassador of almost 30 years, the Helen Duval Scholarship Club contributed $10,930.95 to BVL, recognizing Duval's lifelong commitment to the organization and America's veterans. "We sincerely thank the Helen Duval Scholarship Club for this wonderful donation," remarked BVL Board Chair Darlene Baker. "Although Helen is recognized in our sport as a pioneer in women's bowling and one of the founders of the youth bowling movement, we at BVL think of her as a living legend based on her work with our veterans." The contribution will be allocated to a number of diverse BVL projects reflecting the geographic range of the Scholarship Club contributors. These projects include the donation of a carpet lane bowling kit to a military unit on active duty; the recreation pro-

gram at Walter Reed Medical Center; the four VA poly-trauma units located throughout the country; and the general BVL fund, serving veterans in VA Hospitals and aging WWII veterans in State Homes. Duval began her role as BVL Ambassador in 1972, touring VA hospitals to teach recuperating veterans how to bowl and providing tips on adaptive techniques necessary due to injuries. Duval became known for her recruitment of even the most reticent of veterans onto the lanes -- forming a strong bond with the patients. Over the years, Duval was credited for getting hundreds of vets active in the sport. Both VA patients and staff eagerly anticipated her clinics. The Helen Duval Scholarship Club is led by Phyl Knoll, Hawthorne, Calif., and Club Cofounders Elaine Mulroney, Shoreline, Wash., and Lillie May Hester, Sierra Vista, Ariz.

"We're so pleased to be able to make this donation in Helen's name," explained Knoll. "This just seemed like the right thing to do. We know Helen's dedication to the cause and we know the good work being done by BVL – it seemed the perfect fit." Bowlers to Veterans Link (BVL), is a national charity founded in 1942 by the sport of bowling to support veterans and active duty military. BVL programs boost morale through recreational therapy utilizing sports, music, and the arts. Since its inception, BVL has contributed more than $35 million to programs and services supporting the mission. The BVL is located in Metropolitan Washington, D.C. and is guided by representatives of the United States Bowling Congress and the Bowling Proprietors Association of America.
