J o a n Ta y l o r ’s Te n P i n R a p . . . . Last week Guy and I attended and worked at the Metropolitan Bowling Writers’ 47th Annual Awards lunch, a highlight of the East Coast Bowling Centers Convention. The three-day convention can be called “Bowl Expo Lite” as it features seminars, parties, a trade show, and our awards lunch. Among other activities, I was proud to present the Metropolitan Male Bowler of the Year award to Tim Mack, son of MC USBC BA Hall of Famer Jimmy Mack, and MC USBC WBA Hall of Famer Joan Mack Hough. It was gratifying to see Rockaway Lanes’ Rich Mark (a new MC USBC WBA Hall of Famer) and Dori Tingoli (a new MC USBC WBA Director) there. More proprietors and pro shop owners should attend this wonderful event, especially since it’s only a drive away, and full registration to attend all the events is only $99 and plans to be again next year at Trump Taj Mahal, Atlantic City in

early October 2010. To see what it’s about, look at the website: www.eastcoastbowl.com/exh.asp . *************** The Morris County USBC Bowling Association is hosting its 57th Annual League Officers’ Doubles Tournament. This will be on Sunday December 6 with squads at 10 a.m. and 12 noon at Plaza Lanes in Madison. Cost is $55 per team or $27.50 per bowler. Entries close November 22. This is open to all officers of men’s women’s and mixed winter and summer leagues sanctioned through the county. Teams may consist of two men, two women, or mixed pairs. Entry forms are available in local bowling centers or on the association’s website: www.mcba-njbowling.com/. For more information contact tournament director Noel J. Gary De Boer, 26, saw his first 800 series in grand style. He rolled 279-300 (his third)-298 for an 877, a house record at Boonton Lanes. This was in the Dr. Riverside League. A 15-year veteran of the sport, Gary started bowling as a youngster when he saw his parents, George and Linda, enjoying their leagues. After his 279 and then 300 he felt confident about the possibility of an octo-series, but not nervous. “I felt I had a pretty good shot. I was in the zone.” It’s not surprising in that he earned a Junior Bowlers’ Tour (JBT) title in Oakland in 1997, a difficult feat at best. Two years ago his team won the Dr. Riverside League. *************** As you know, time flies whether you are having fun or not. It may seem a little soon to be pushing the tenth annual Pro Image Bowling Camp, but based on last year’s participation, this could sell out early. This three-day camp will be held at Rockaway Lanes, scheduled for Friday through Sunday, July 30August 1, 2010. Total cost with tax is $615.25. So for about $25 per hour what do the students get? What don’t they get! A partial list includes: hours of on-lane instruction and bowling on league and sport patterns with premier certified coaches (three are gold level, of which there are only 35 on the entire planet), classroom presentations, mental game, a custom plan of practice, a computer analysis of mechanics CD with voice commentary for each bowler, and everything from grip analysis to understanding equipment. Lunch is included as well. Each day starts at 8:30 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. At the conclusion of the third day, one student will have won the opportunity to bowl a TV-style match against the camp’s visiting pro (TBD). In the past such names as Parker Bohn III, Rhino Page, Jason Couch, Chris Barnes, Pete Weber, Johnny Petraglia and Ryan Shafer have appeared, working one-onone with the bowlers and answering questions about their pro tour experiences. Camp director and gold coach Ken Yokobosky says, “Last year the camp sold out early. Reserve now to guarantee your spot. Reserve by December 31 and receive a $50 discount. A deposit of $325 guarantees a spot in the camp, with balance due by July 9. For more information, contact Pro Image Bowling at 973-625-5554.

Idle bowling thoughts. ...A team's lineup positions can be very important. Alltime great Parker Bohn III feels that your leadoff individual should be a deadly spare shooter, one that can mark when it counts most and one that can spark the spirit of a team. The anchor, or final bowler in the lineup, should be your best all-around bowler, but not necessarily the one with the highest average. A top anchor can hit the pocket when the pressure is on, is a good solid spare bowler, but one better known for coming up with that strike or two when needed in a tight game. ...There is no such thing as an easy spare, unless it's the one you don't have to face because you got a strike. ...Did you know that up until 1994, from 1958, pro bowlers had to follow strict limits on the length of hair, pony tails, braids and beards. ...In the more than 50 years that pro bowling has been on TV, the happening causing the most comment was not a big win, not a particular match, not a perfect game, but Mark Roth's first ever TV conversion of the 7-10 split. ...You hear about the 300 games rolled in bowling. But a real rarity in bowling is a 291 game, and the rarest of them all in the upper category is a 292 game. ...When you discuss smooth bowlers the name of the late Joe Joseph comes to mind most often. For a fairly big man, he moved to the line with all the grace and balance of dancing legend Fred Astaire. One big difference, Joseph carried a heavy bowling ball, not a light hat or cane.

...Bowling does have some power to make people much more attentive to dates. The same people who make medical and business matter appointments mere days in advance often enter bowling tournaments two years prior to the competition. ...The move to Texas by most integers in bowling will take time, particularly such attractions as the International Bowling Hall of Fame and Museum, but it has to be one of the most forward thinking bowling ideas in the history of the sport. ...The more you study bowling history the more you realize that the negative of bowling has been expanded and repeated much more than the more prevalent positives of the sport--at every level. ...Eighteen years ago John Petraglia was asked who he saw as the future stars. His selections were Parker Bohn III, Dave Ozio, Amleto Monacelli, Pete Weber, Brian Voss and Del Ballard. That's what you call a super crystal ball. All became top stars and all but Ballard have been elected to the PBA Hall of Fame, and he should gain that honor in the near future. ...The good old days were when you were pretty sure you could bowl your weight. ...The head pin of a bowling setup probably has more strange remarks directed to it than any other inanimate object in the world. ...Any league secretary or tournament director will tell you that the people who know all the bowling rules and let you know they do are not nearly as bad as the bowlers who think they know all the rules.
