Andrew Teall, Chris Aker Roll 900 Series ARLINGTON, Texas – Chris Aker of Winnemucca, Nev., and Andrew Teall of Medford, N.J., recently became just the 14th and 15th bowlers, respectively, to roll United States Bowling Congressapproved 900 series. The feats were accomplished within three days of each other and were the first since Rich Jerome Jr. of Baltimore had a 900 series on Dec. 22, 2008. The first approved 900 did not occur until Feb. 2, 1997 when Jeremy Sonnenfeld rolled three consecutive perfect games in Lincoln, Neb. Aker, a 47-year-old left-hander, had 36 consecutive strikes Oct. 30 in the Friday Night Mixers League at Spare Time Bowling Center. Teall, a 24-year-old right-hander, matched that Nov. 2 in the Monday Invitational League at Medford Lanes.

“It was pretty cool, and doing it with my wife bowling on the team was pretty special,” Aker said. “She usually gets nervous and can't watch, so she's only seen one or two of my previous 300 games. This time she watched pretty much every frame, which is nice.” Aker had seven 300 games and an 825 high series before his 900 series. Teall had five earlier perfect games and beat his previous best series of 813. “I really wasn’t thinking of a 900; all I was really focused on was getting a 200 to get 800,” Teall said. “I’m still on Cloud 9. I didn’t know what to do. People behind me were going pretty crazy but I didn’t know how to act, whether I should jump up and down or fall to my knees.” Aker and Teall are the 13th and 14th bowlers to roll approved 900s, all on regular league lane

Joan Taylor ’s Ten Pin Rap.... Can you acquire a gene pool through marriage? Maybe that’s what Joe Untisz, 42, did. He rolled his first 300 game, this in the Kings and Queens League at Circle Lanes. His games were 300-223 and 212 on a 190 average. Was he nervous? Yes, but he tried not to think about it. In fact, he was thinking of a song in his head, “If You Only Knew” by Shined Down, and it kept him from over thinking his final shot. Untisz is a 35-year veteran of the game, having watched his parents, Dorothy and the late Joe Untisz in their leagues. He has elected to receive the USBC standard ring. And the gene pool? In addition to his bowling wife, he is the son-in-law of Morris County USBC BA Association Manager Albert Gonsiska, Jr. ******************** Thanks to Carol Chadwick for sending in the results of the 42nd Singles and 7th No Tap Doubles Tournament, held at Sparta Lanes on November 8. The winners are: Singles Class A - Linda Klusick - 781, Eileen Grogan 726, Nidia Haneveld - 684 and Sharon Bush - 674. Singles Class B - Linda Calamari - 732, Kathy Squier - 710 and Laura Burtha - 690. The No Tap Doubles in Class A First place was a tie with Terri Baldwin/Linda Rose and Linda Klusick/Susan Olivo – 1545. Class B - Linda Calamari/Laura Bertha 1646 and Sandy DeMeo/Eileen Grogan - 1620. All scores are with handicap. ******************** This week’s honor roll salutes Kelly Kulick, Union, who shot a 300 game and 800 series at Hanover Lanes in the Tenpinners League. Also, Kelly qualified to bowl in the January PBA Tournament of Champions through the women’s PBA tour. ******************** The Morris County USBC Youth Association will be hosting its Annual Adult/Youth Roll-off on Sunday, February 7, 2010. All houses in Morris County that run certified Youth Leagues will be hosting their qualifiers during the month of December. Check with your league official to see when they are having their qualifier. ******************** I attended the fall meeting of the Morris County USBC WBA where the officers and directors did not disappoint. The business meeting was kept on point and lasted under an hour. Minutes and the financial report were approved. An 8-pin “no tap” tournament followed, and if you want to see lots of 7-counts, just tell people that 8 or more counts as a strike. There were several no-tap 300 games, and the top winners enjoyed cash prizes in addition to three gift bags donated by Sargeant-at-Arms Elaine Wilson. It was truly a time for fun bowling, socializing, and keeping up with the county and what these women are doing for their members. ******************** Condolences are extended to the wife, son, and friends of Mark Cise, a bowler out of Madison Plaza Lanes. Dena Riccone from the center sent this: "On Friday, September 25, 2009, at 51 years of age, a devoted member of the bowling community was lost. Mark Cise was a Summit resident who lent a helping hand throughout not only his community, but others as well. Those who encountered Mark were touched by his genuine enthusiasm for life. His heart was as kind as his love for the game of bowling."

Once upon a time. Strange things have happened in bowling's past, some lost to today's bowlers. There was a time when, in order to speed things up, bowlers were filled out in the final frame. That happened when a game was a runaway, out of the wood, meaning all strikes could not pull out a win for the losing club. If the leadoff man recorded a spare, he would automatically be given ten on his fill ball. Don't under estimate the effect. Even though it only meant a pin or two a game that translated into a two or more point increase in average. But as you went down into the lineup it got worse, for the official records, and a lot better for the bowlers in the fourth position and more for the anchor bowlers. They were often the recipients of a no bowl strikeout in the 10th. Now that could turn into a gift of 20 or more pins in a single game. Think about what a difference it has made to you in the 10th frame, when you ran into an open frame, as compared to a triple strike in the closing canto. Don't get me wrong, this wasn't a constant occurrence, but

even if done on occasion it had an effect on all averages, team and individual, and if teams used the same lineup positions, leadoff men had the most legitimate averages and anchor men had the most inflated. One of the key men in any lineup was the figure filbert who could quickly figure out the difference in wood, or being more precise, the exact pin difference between teams at any point. Scorers, at the bottom of each team's lineup, would record the mark count, a mark being a strike or spare. If one bowler records a seven on a spare or a double strike and an opponent fells nine, that's 'a quick two pin difference, and in certain games one team could be ahead of another by 30 or more pins in wood count. For many years, young bowlers, and seniors too, made some extra spending or bowling money by keeping score in leagues, and that was particularly true in California. That is not necessary in these days of automatic scoring but that key counter is still important because many bowlers are slow in scoring, even slower in the projection of scores and the possibilities on both sides of competition. And that even goes for some of the announcers describing games on TV. Head to head match games were an important and exciting part of the sport and home matches, as few as five or ten games, or as many as 50 to 100 games, were common, well attended, and well officiated. Sometimes, part of the agreement called for the pin-boys to wear white gloves and footwear. Wasn't that a nice touch to the action? No. It was simply a better way to keep an eye on the fast moving hands and feet of the human pinsetters to make sure that they always set up pins instead of somehow, by mistake of course, they either pushed or kicked a pin down here and there. And now you know a little bit more about the ancient art of scoring. Once upon a time.

Red White and Blue Update ARLINGTON, Texas – For the past several months, the United States Bowling Congress and Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America have worked closely with bowling centers to test the new USBC Red, White and Blue oil patterns. USBC and BPAA data indicate all three patterns have passed both difficulty and fairness standards. During testing, which was conducted at Red Bird Lanes in Duncanville, Texas, and Dunbar Bowling Center in Dunbar, W.Va., the USBC Red pattern played at the same level of difficulty as each bowling center’s standard house pattern based on each bowler’s entering average from the 2008-09 season. The results for the White and Blue patterns also have fallen in line with USBC and BPAA’s predicted and intended ranges. These results were observed in all participating bowlers regardless of average. USBC Red is intended to be the most forgiving condition, USBC White is expected to be more challenging and USBC Blue should be the most difficult of the new conditions. USBC Sport Bowling conditions continue to be the most challenging level of oil patterns. “We are very pleased with the results of these early tests,” USBC Technical Director Steve Kloempken said. “Further analysis is required, but, right now, the Red, White and Blue patterns are exhibiting the

degrees of difficulty and fairness that were intended.” The next batch of tests is now underway at centers such as AMF Fun Fest in Arlington, Texas, Mountain Sun Lanes in Hailey, Idaho, and Cityview Lanes in Fort Worth, Texas. Additional centers have expressed interest and will be brought online as test sites as soon as they are equipped to do so. If the latest round of testing yields acceptable results, the Red, White and Blue patterns will be made available for local and state tournament use in Spring 2010 and for the Fall 2010 league season. As part of the effort to gain attention for the new condition categories, USBC is sponsoring an upcoming stop on the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour. The Pepsi Red, White and Blue Open, presented by the USBC, will be held at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kan., Dec. 7-13. The finals will air Jan. 3 on ESPN. “The Red, White and Blue program has a lot of potential for USBC and BPAA because it has the ability to educate bowlers and provide options to proprietors,” USBC Vice President National Governing Body Neil Stremmel said. “Bowlers can use these patterns as stepping stones to transition from house leagues to Sport leagues, and proprietors can use them as a means of putting out fair, tested conditions for use in league or tournament competition.”
