Financial Report 2008/09 was a very challenging year for CTK due to the economy, however we are optimistic in the coming year due to the restructuring of the school and expense controls in place. We had a deficit of $59,000 and also owe the diocese 78,000 in assessments and bills. Our mortgage is $1.3 mill @ 5% interest. The mortgage was set up by the diocese with a 5% interest rate and 15 year term, but has a balloon due of $500,000. Our objective would be to pay this down asap. The school is doing very well, our subsidy is projected to reduce from $300,000 to $20,000. Expense control is and will continue to be a high priority. The parish was audited this year by the diocese and passed. Your generosity is sincerely appreciated and we continue to rely on your support. Our annual appeal has been pushed back to after the new year, however if you have the capability of providing additional support now, please consider doing so. If you have any questions please contact the rectory business office or email the finance council. The finance council would like to remind you of the availability of our automatic donation service. We now have capabilities to split your donations by white green and gold. Information can be obtained from our web site. Also our finance council is looking for additional members. Please contact Father Peter or email the financial council if interested. - Sincerely - Finance council members

Reflecting on Our Gospel Reading Today In this Sunday's Gospel reading, Jesus speaks of his Second Coming. And here he hasn't even finished his first coming! How confusing it must have been to the disciples. They grew even more confused after Jesus died, was resurrected, and ascended to heaven but delayed coming back. They remembered him saying that "this generation" will not pass away until all these Second Coming events have taken place, yet time passed, the apostles began to die off, and Jesus still had not reappeared in the clouds. The misery of living in this world continued. Do you have an unending problem? Where's Jesus? Notice what he said: "When you see these things happening, know that I am near, at the gates." He wasn't pinning down a date. He wasn't giving the disciples – or us – a definitive clue about the timing of his Second Coming, because he had no clue! ("Of that day or hour, no one knows, not the angels, not even the Son, but only the Father.") So what was he trying to convey? His nearness! For the past 2000 years, we have all been part of "this generation" that will not pass away before his Second Coming. It's the generation of Christian humanity, the generation of the Church as the Body of Christ on Earth, the generation of children who have been adopted by God the Father through the sacrifice and resurrection of God the Son. The final era of God's salvation plan began on the first Easter Sunday. The "Last Days" began then and will continue until the Second Coming of Christ. It is the age of the Holy Spirit, i.e., the age after Christ's earthly ministry and his ascension back to heaven but when his Spirit is available to us all.

Facts from the Past Did you know… When Father John Mayer died in 1967, Father Frederick Golden was appointed as the parish's third pastor. Under his leadership, the people of Christ the King paid off the parish mortgage for the new church and school, built in 1963. A fire nearly burned down the first rectory on Highland Avenue and 16th Street in the late 1960s. Associate pastors under Father Mayer included Father Edward Stefanich and Father John Ryan.

The lesson of the fig tree is that we can discern when summer is near. In other words, we can discern – in good times and in bad – that Jesus is near to us, not in flesh (except at Mass in the Eucharist) but in his Holy Spirit. Jesus is right now at "the gate" of your next move, your next step on the journey to heaven. A gate is meant to be opened so that we can pass through it. Jesus is opening the gate right now for you – the gate of holiness, the gate of love. Step through it to live in the fullness of the life he has planned for you here on earth.

Do you have any “facts from the past” that we could include in future bulletins? Please call the rectory 630-6291717 ext 6050 or email [email protected].

Rest in Peace Our condolences to the friends and family of Rick Madeson and Rose Murphy who passed away last week. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen. May Their souls and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.

During this month of November, take time to visit your loved ones at the cemetery.

Pray for Healing

Flu Season During the cold and flu season, parishioners are welcome to give a friendly nod instead of a handshake if they prefer. Please try to be sensitive to the choices of your neighbor during the sign of peace. Also, taking from the chalice is an option - but not a requirement. When we receive the host, it is the whole and entire Christ received. Receiving from the cup is referred to as a fuller symbol of the communion we share in Christ, but not necessary for full communion.

Tony Rudinski, Jean Brzezinski, Diana Crue, Peter Christoff, Dolores Hrabec, Jay Perry, Roberta Dirschl, Joan Frichtl, Ed Fontona, Cathy Castro, Frank Nelson, John Sheehan, Mark Wettsteadt, Denis Perry, Joan Temborius, Rose Fenske, Lorraine Wick, Marilyn Melichar, Carmen Giacalone, Isabel Carey, Efren Iraola, Mary Lou LeRoy, Sharon Barsaloux, Brian McGarry, Karen Schumann, Esther Sassi, Sam Battaglia, Robert Balteskonis. Please pray for all the sick in our parish, our families, our friends, our community.

Please update the parish office with the status of your loved one’s health. We will be clearing our list of the sick in December. If you wish your name to stay on the list, please call 630.629.1717.

O Come Let Us Adore Him!

Holy Hour for the Holy Souls in Purgatory Every 3rd Thursday of the month, the CCW sponsors a Holy Hour from 7:00 – 8:00 PM with monthly prayer intentions. Please join us this coming Thursday to pray for our beloved dead in front of the Blessed Sacrament. The greatest charity you can do here on is by praying for the dead who are no longer able to do anything for themselves, besides their unending gratefulness for you while up in heaven. We will begin with the rosary followed with the Divine Mercy chaplet and ends with benediction by Deacon Wayne. “Can you not watch one hour with me?”

In Need of Adorers We are needing adorers for the following hours for our 24 hour adoration: during the first Thursday/Friday of each month. If you could please spare an hour with our Lord, it is highly appreciated. We are especially in need of adorers from 8:00pm - 11:00pm, and 3:00am to 5:00am. For our 12 hours adoration we need adorers especially from 4:00pm-7:00pm. Please consider signing to either one of these hours. You can call Maura Gonzalo at 630-620-0471. Thank you so much and God bless you all.

Christ the King Early Learning Academy Update Dear Parishioners and Friends, I am happy to say that the Academy has been very busy! We have had two successful fundraisers that have added $2,000 to our budget! We have all of you to thank for that! Thank you for your continued support of our Academy! We had some platforms and foot stools made for better reach at the Smart Boards and water fountains. We also added pointers to our Smart Boards when the students use them. It really is a joy to see the student use a Smart Board to play a game, create music, complete a puzzle, write letters, hear a story, etc. This fall we also offered a preschool screening tool thanks to St. Michael's in Wheaton. Our kindergarten class had a readiness test as well. Both assessments give parents information about where there child is at with academics and helps the teachers develop curriculum. Our Learning Chapel continues to change with our curriculum and the church calendar--it is a peaceful place for the students to gather for prayer and share their faith. The Jubilee Mass with Bishop Sartain was a beautiful celebration of the Eucharist! I was so touched by the collaborative effort of such faith-filled people! Everything was so beautiful and personable! I felt honored to be present at your 50th Anniversary Mass of Christ the King Parish! Important dates: November 11-No School due to Veterans' Day November 12-Academy Advisory Council Meeting at 6:30PM at the school November 14-Knights of Columbus Spaghetti Dinner 4-8PM at the PLC November 21,22-Bake Sale after all Masses November 25-Thanksgiving Feast for Kindergarten November 26,27-No School due to Thanksgiving Holiday I am very proud of the kindergarten students who celebrated All Saints' Day with Mass! They love praying the Our Father with Father Peter at the altar and sharing the sign of peace with parishioners at Mass. They have done a great job learning about their faith! As Thanksgiving and the feast of Christ the King approaches, I am reminded of how we are all blessed by God. I am thankful that we share our talent and Jesus' love with each other as we are servants of God here on earth. May your family be blessed during this time of year. ~ Mrs. Placey

What is Manna?

Note from the Pastor

Manna is a tuition reimbursement/fundraiser program. This year-round fundraiser provides over 200 local and nationwide grocery, retail, restaurants, gas stations and specialty gift cards/certificates for order through Christ the King Parish.

I wanted to share this news with the people of Christ the King. Read below the letter. Let us continue to pray for the respect life outreach in our diocese. Thanks to the few parishioners who attended some part of the 40 Days for Life at our local abortion clinic. Please pray for the State of Illinois. Come spend some time at Adoration on Thursdays and lift our state up in prayer. Join me at the abortion clinic on Saturdays at 8:30. Come and celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation before mass. We need all the grace we can get from our Loving God. Let us celebrate this Jubilee Year with great joy!

The Gift certificates or debit cards purchased through Manna are worth their face value. The vendors listed have agreed to donate a percentage to the parish. Each vendor has their own set amount. This money can be used to help offset tuition or to help pay down the parish debt. We cannot give you the money in form of cash. Fundraising: The vendors each have a percentage next to their name. That percentage is the amount of money that is going to be credited back to your child’s account. That percentage is 75% of the vendor’s original amount, with the remaining 25% going to the Academy/RE. Ordering: If you wish to order manna, we have an order form on the opposite side of this sheet. Orders are due Monday at 9:00 a.m. Orders are filled and are ready by Tuesday. Make checks payable to CTK Manna. Manna can be used to pay Kohl's credit card bill. Please fill out the lower left portion of the order form completely. Write in the total dollar amount requested on the left of the vendor you wish to order. Write in the total of all money purchased in the box on the lower left corner. Write the amount of the check enclosed. Decide how you would like the credit to be applied to RE, ELA or Building Fund. Mark Hold or Send with student. Orders not marked send with student will automatically be held for parent pick up. Tuition Credits are issued in September and January. Sorry that we cannot accept credit cards or third party checks. Only parishioner checks will be accepted. There is a $5 NSF fee for any returned check.

Early Learning Academy BAKE SALE Next Weekend after all masses in the narthex. Proceeds to benefit the Christ the King Early Learning Academy.

Dear Friends, Sad news here, but let us heed Christ's call - "Do not let your hearts be troubled. Have faith in God, and faith in me!" (John 14:1) The Illinois Parental Notice of Abortion Act is back on hold, after a Cook County judge granted a temporary restraining order against enforcement of the law, which was sought by the ACLU. The law was in effect for several hours today, after the Illinois Medical Disciplinary Board hearing, before the ACLU obtained the temporary restraining order. Obviously, the abortion lobby is doing all that they can to prevent this commonsense regulation from taking effect, because they know that it will reduce profits, and all of our border states have parental notice laws. For abortion advocates, this is a national issue, so they are resorting to extraordinary measures to deny the rights of Illinois parents and legal guardians to know about their daughters healthcare. As God's people, such a setback never discourages us, because we know in the end that the Lord already has the victory! Rather, this highlights the tremendous importance of respect life ministry in Illinois right now. And, think of all the graces flowing from our efforts as we persevere! Therefore, let us rededicate ourselves to this crucial cause which God has entrusted to us, through prayer, educational outreach in our parishes and schools, pastoral care and continued public policy involvement. We will keep you posted on further developments. Thank you for all you do for the Gospel of Life!

Finding Hope Through Gratitude and Generosity Pope Benedict XVI's most recent pilgrimage took him to the cities of Prague and Brno in the Czech Republic. During this trip, the Holy Father returned to one of his most consistent themes: hope in Christ. In one of his homilies the Holy Father affirmed that "history has demonstrated the absurdities to which man descends when he excludes God from the horizon of his choices and actions, and how hard it is to build a society inspired by the values of goodness, justice and fraternity, because the human being is free and his freedom remains fragile." "In the modern age both faith and hope... have been relegated to the private and other-worldly sphere," said the Pope, "while in day-to-day public life confidence in scientific and economic progress has been affirmed. We all know that this progress is ambiguous: it opens up possibilities for good as well as evil,” yet it is "not enough to guarantee the moral welfare of society. "Man needs to be liberated from material oppressions," he added, "but more profoundly, he must be saved from the evils that afflict the spirit. And who can save him if not God, Who is Love and has revealed His face as Almighty and Merciful Father in Jesus Christ? Our firm hope is therefore Christ." In troubled times, when the economy is uncertain and when the world’s peace and stability are threatened from every side, it’s easy to lose hope -- to give in to the temptation to feel lost and alone. As the Holy Father clearly reminds us, now is the time to look to Jesus Christ, our firm hope in times of adversity. Where do we find Jesus during these difficult days? How will we recognize him? Our faith tells us that we will find him in the heart of the struggle, in the eye of the storm, wherever people are hurting or in serious need. We find him wherever healing and forgiveness are needed, and wherever kindness and encouraging words are in short supply. In other words, we find the Lord in the very places where hope is most threatened. We find him in those circumstances that most desperately cry out for liberation -- from material oppressions and from the evils that afflict the spirit. We find him in the inner city, in rural communities, in suburban neighborhoods and in small towns. We find him in every region of the world where there are individuals, families and communities that need our help and encouragement in these difficult times. In their 1992 pastoral letter, Stewardship: A Disciple's Response, the bishops of the United States challenged us to let go of the various "isms" that confront us today: individualism, materialism, socialism, hedonism, consumerism and many more. These are social philosophies that become styles of life -- the so-called lifestyles of the rich and famous. Too easily they become obsessions, or as the Holy Father says, "evils that afflict the spirit." Jesus told us that where our treasure is our heart will be also. (Mt. 6:21) He taught us to be responsible stewards, not obsessive consumers, and he showed us that true happiness and peace are the products of gratitude and generosity, not greed and envy.

Stewardship of Treasure November 1

In his encyclical Spes Salvi ("Saved by Hope") Pope Benedict encourages us to "look to Mary, the greatest witness to hope." We look to Mary because she experienced the confusion and anxiety that we do. She had reason to despair because of the "sword of sorrow" that pierced her heart, but she never gave up # Registered Families hope. Mary was the original Christian steward. She found hope Account in God's promise that her divine Son would be victorious - in spite of all appearances - over the powers of sin and death. And White Envelopes she held onto that hope in a spirit of gratitude and love no matNon-envelope users ter what difficulties came her way. Mary's hope made her the model for Christian hope in every century and the image of the Church in its missionary witness to all peoples and cultures in every time and place throughout human history. We find Christ in the witness of Mary and all the saints, and we find hope in their many, diverse expressions of gratitude and generosity. May Christ our hope challenge and inspire us to be grateful, responsible and generous stewards of all God’s gifts -- material and spiritual. Through the intercession of Mary and all the saints, may we find happiness and peace in these times of uncertainty by opening our hearts to the Gospel of hope and charity. Leaving a Legacy A young man was surprised to find his sick and elderly grandfather planting a small peach tree in his backyard. When the young man asked his grandfather why he was planting the tree, the old man replied, “Son, all my life I have eaten the fruit from trees that other people have planted. I figure I have an obligation to make sure there is some fruit around for others to enjoy.”

Four Ways to Leave a Legacy Did you know there are four easy ways for you to remember you parish in your will? 1. A specific Bequest – you can designate a certain amount of cash or specific assets to the parish. 2. A Residual Bequest – you can plan for the parish to receive all or a portion of your estate after other specific bequests have been distributed. 3. A Percentage Bequest – You can designate a certain percentage of the estate to go to the parish. 4. A Contingent Bequest – You can make the parish the recipient of a bequest if others named in your will are not living at the time of your death. No matter how you decide to remember your parish, a gift from your will accomplishes several key benefits. • It sends a strong message to your heirs that the Church played an important role in your life. • It guarantees that your generosity to the Church will be continued even after you are gone. • It provides important assistance to our parish. • It may even provide tax benefits to your heirs. Talk to your lawyer or financial counselor today about the best way for you to remember your parish in your will.

Preparing for a New Year We began the Month of November focusing on the end times of those who have gone before us in Faith. The Saints and the Souls in Purgatory have received or await with certainty the promise of eternal reward in the heavenly kingdom. We pray for those who have not yet received the fullness of God’s promise. We ask them and those in Heaven to pray for us. As we come to the end of the Liturgical Year, the focus of our readings is on the end of the world – an event which is intended to raise terror in the hearts of the unjust and the unfaithful, but joy and consolation in the hearts of the faithful. It’s a time perhaps for each of us to consider endings in our own lives. The liturgical year ends in two weeks and the calendar year ends in six weeks. How has each of these years been for you? Throughout the liturgical year, how have you lived your life in relationship to God and your responsibilities to Him? Have you been attentive to the seasons and many feasts of the liturgical year? Have you participated fully and actively each Sunday and on the special days of the church year? Throughout the calendar year, how have you lived your life in relationship to others and your responsibilities to them? As you spend time reflecting on this year, do the memories raise terror in your heart or joy and consolation? Make a new year’s resolution now to receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation before the end of the year. Perhaps put our parish Reconciliation Service, December 4, on your calendar. Prepare for the Sacrament by using the following Examination of Conscience as part of that preparation. Don’t just make this a fast read. Read reflectively and spend some time on each phrase. For my failure to respect myself by not tending to my physical and emotional well-being through a lack of sleep, working too many hours, not getting sufficient exercise or quiet and leisure time, by the misuse of food through overeating, alcohol through overindulgence, Lord forgive me. For the times my pride led me to bitterness, brooding, resentment, anger and grudges because others failed to measure up to my expectations; for the times I have been so deeply hurt by others that I found it almost impossible to forgive them, Lord forgive me. For my greed, which shows itself in the way I hoard my time, my money, and my possessions and refuse to share them with those in need of life's necessities; for allowing things to become more important than people and relationships and for spending my time accumulating as many material possessions as possible, Lord forgive me. For the selfishness and laziness that prevent me from seriously discerning the times in which God is calling me to be His hands, his feet, his voice; for the selfishness and laziness that prevent me from seeing opportunities to live and model gospel values by affirming my spouse, parents, children, boss, employees, coworkers, and classmates, and from looking for ways to make my home, workplace, neighborhood, parish, and school a better place to be, Lord forgive me. For failing to accept people of other faiths, races, languages; or sex-as equals; for manipulating people by misusing or abusing the truth; for talking about others and spreading rumors that hurt their reputation; for writing people off because of their positions or opinions; for failing to honor contracts by not doing quality work or paying for a job I requested, Lord forgive me. For my ungratefulness in spite of God's ongoing gifts of life, health, loved ones, employment, housing, and food; for failing to express my thanks every day through personal and family prayer; for not always appreciating the Eucharist and the other Sacraments of the Church, Lord forgive me. For hesitating to forgive myself even though God has lovingly forgiven me, Lord forgive me. As an expression of my acceptance of God's forgiveness for those things I recall and for those that are too painful to name or put into words, I pray: I confess to Almighty God, and to you my brothers and sisters, that I have sinned through my own fault in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do; I ask Blessed Mary, ever virgin, all the angels and the saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.
