From the Desk of Our President

The American Free Enterprise System and Sustainable Regional Development in the 21st Century Dear Member, Neither time nor space will allow me to elaborate on these two very critical subjects, so what I hope to do here, is simply introduce the issues and expand on them in future columns and venues. This country was founded and made the envy of the world on the principles of the American Free Enterprise System. As the US Chamber has just announced the “American Free Enterprise, Dream Big” campaign, we salute this initiative and agree with them that “as a nation, we face major policy challenges – but none greater or more important than reviving the economy, restoring the 7 million jobs lost to the current recession, and creating the 13 million more jobs that will be needed over the next decade.” Through recent surveys, it has also been found that while people support free enterprise,

they do not clearly see how it benefits them as individuals. Concern has also been expressed in the future of the free enterprise system, and questioned as to whether the private sector will or should take the lead in our nation’s number one challenge – job creation. Here, in North Myrtle Beach, and the Grand Strand region, it’s daunting to think of the creation of 7 million, let alone 13 million jobs over the next decade. Yet, we hold our destiny in our own hands and through visionary planning and bold action, we can certainly do our share among our predominantly small business sector, to create jobs and strengthen our local economy. As the US Chamber campaign proposes, it is a belief in the values of individual initiative, hard work, freedom of choice, and the free exchange of trade, capital, and ideas which can lead America

back to prosperity. Only free enterprise will create the innovation, the opportunities, and the jobs, our nation, our community of North Myrtle Beach, and the Grand Strand region needs. Switching gears to Sustainable Regional Development. What the heck is this? I’m fortunate to begin my participation this week, in the first session of a nine-month program funded by the Ford Foundation on Regional Sustainable Development. Supported and sponsored by our national professional association, the American Chamber of Commerce Executives (ACCE), I’ll be joining about 15 of my peers from chambers throughout our country, selected by ACCE and the Ford Foundation, to receive hands-on training, peer-to-peer knowledge exchange, research, and examination of working models covering a wide range of growth and sustainability issues.

Areas such as infrastructure, immigration, land use, housing, education, environment, minority inclusion, and inner city challenges, will be addressed through meetings, online teleseminars, readings, and the development of regional action plans.

Comfort Kit Collection Did you realize that the Coastal SC Chapter of The American Red Cross responded to the needs of 700 residents that lost their homes to fire last year? If you had to leave your home quickly due to a fire or disaster you probably wouldn’t think to grab your toothbrush, soap or shampoo, would you? That is why The American Red Cross provides “comfort kits” to all of the people they help. The K-Kids of North Myrtle Beach Elementary and their fellow students wanted to help The American Red Cross. The NMBE K-Kids began a school wide collection and when Nanci Conley, Director of Public Support for the Coastal SC Chapter of The American Red Cross, came to speak at the October 7th K-Kids meeting, she was overwhelmed with the amount of items the students had collected. The children collected enough soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo and other incidentals for many comfort kits. As the KKids say before the beginning of each meeting, “As a K-Kid, I promise to serve my neighborhood and my school; I will show respect toward my environment; and I will try to make the world a better place in which to live.”

October Business After Hours

Special thanks to Molly Darcy’s for hosting a wonderful Business After Hours! 8

Online Advertiser’s Bill of Rights After dwindling in the recession, Internet advertising, the decade's most disruptive marketing machine, is regaining the momentum. According to Lauren Rich Fine, a longtime media analyst and professor at Kent State University, much of the advertising in long-established media, particularly in the classified sections of newspapers, will never rebound to pre-recession levels. As a result - or a consequence - advertisers are increasingly allocating more of their budgets to the Web. Harvard Business School professor Ben Edelman recently published a post titled "Towards a Bill of Rights for Online Advertisers". In it, he suggests "five specific rights advertisers should demand as they buy online placements". They are: 1. An advertiser’s right to know where its ads are shown. Accountability should not be undermined by the luck of information to determine if a certain website qualifies to show an ad. It is nonsense to pay for ad space without knowing where the ad will appear.

2. An advertiser’s right to meaningful, itemized billing. People might love playing online games; however business owners are definitely not happy playing accounting games. When paying for a click, advertisers need to make sure that the computer mouse was really clicked. 3. An advertiser’s right to use its data as it sees fit. Campaign configuration or records of campaign performance. All need to be available and portable, as they are the property of the advertiser. 4. An advertiser’s right to enjoy the fruits of its advertising campaigns. Piggyback advertising is not rare. Advertisers need to make sure the ad network is not reselling their lead to a competitor in order to increase their own revenue. Advertisers pay fair value for all clicks on their ads. Still, when someone clicks on an airline’s ad, often times the ad network identifies the lead, based on behavioral targeting, as a potential traveler. The web visitor is then served another ad, oftentimes belonging to a competing company.

5. An advertiser’s right to resolve disputes fairly and transparently. Contracts are often tilted, offering ad networks too many advantages. From disclaimed promises that ads will appear in any certain place, to denied responsibility for fraud, they all offer ad networks great immunity from advertiser’s complaints. Today’s challenges remain the convoluted relationships established by hurdles of ad networks, hard to brake by small advertisers. To remain effective, advertisers need to settle with companies offering web tracking technologies making it easy to measure whether a search ad campaign is yielding adequate sales to justify the expense. If their online spending isn't paying off, advertisers should pull the plug. No matter how advanced the marketing technology is, it all boils down to the nature of the most basic economic activity: trading services or products for money. Advertisers have the money and they should always remember this. After all, the ultimate power is in the dollar.

CELEBRATE THE CHILDREN! The LITTLE RIVER MEDICAL CENTER FOUNDATION will launch its first Fundraiser on Friday, November 6th, with a Spaghetti Lunch from 11 am-2 pm at the Villa Romana Italian Restaurant, located at 707 S. Kings Highway, Myrtle Beach.

From the Desk of our President, Continued A simple explanation of regional sustainable development is its growth strategy that uses natural resources wisely and builds infrastructure for long-term competitiveness. It shares prosperity across a range of businesses, interests, residents, and neighborhoods within one region. Another way to say this is regional sustainable development is a way to compete and prosper amid the vast global economic changes of the 21st century. Regional sustainable development is a positive, long-term growth agenda, focused on building per capita income and wealth within metropolitan North America while creating long-term opportunities for businesses and residents. 10

Over the next year, I will be learning more about our role in North Myrtle Beach in developing such an agenda and serving as a regional steward to advance this strategy throughout the Grand Strand.

Quarterly Membership Meeting Each quarter the NMB Chamber hosts a Quarterly Membership Breakfast Meeting for new and existing members to learn more about Chamber programs and benefits.

Sincerely,

The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, December 9th at 8:30 am. Location TBA. (Please check the Weekly Update email blasts for the location.)
