Less than 30 Days and Counting!

F

amily we are within 30 -days of the 2009 BCMS Family Reunion. The Planning and Steering Committees have been busy putting everything in place for what we truly hope will be a wonderful and exciting celebration. We want each of you to encourage all of our family members and other relatives to please come and enjoy the fun and fellowship starting Thursday, July 23rd. The reunion will end on Sunday, July 26th and you’ll have to wait until 2011 to be able to share good

times with our family. Let me lay out the activities planned for this glorious weekend… The family is kicking off the

reunion on Thursday evening with its “Early Bird” Welcome Reception at 7:30 p.m .at the River Oaks Resort Hospitality Suite, on early

Friday morning the first BCMS Family Golf Outing will tee off at 8:00 a.m. on the River Oaks Golf Course. Later on that afternoon, we’ll have some fun at our Old Fashion Picnic out at the Grand Park Myrtle Beach. We can’t break tradition -both our Memorial Breakfast and Family Banquet will be held at the Holiday Inn West – Myrtle Beach. Our own Rev. Dr. Jerry McLaughlin will bring the family message to us at the breakfast and on that Saturday evening we are blessed to have as our guest speaker The Honorable Carl L. Anderson House of Representative of District (Continued on page 4)

BCMS to Hold 1st Golf Classic

W

e are glad to announce the first BCMS Family Classic that will take place at the reunion on Friday, July 24th. Chairman, Teddy Mitchell and his committee are calling all family golfers (male or female) and novice golfers to sign up to play. Here are the particulars on the outing:

Place: River Oaks Golf Course

Tee Time: 8:00 a.m. Tournament Type: “TEXAS SCRAMBLE” *Post handicap if you have one. Definition: Texas Scramble is a competition format that is a basic scramble with a slight twist. Rules: Scrambles involve 4-person teams playing four balls, but with each shot coming from the same spot (the best of the four drives is chosen and all four team members then hit from that spot, and so on). The variation in a Texas Scramble is that at least four drives (Continued on page 3)

he BCMS Family Reunion Planning Committee would like to continue the Scholarship Program started (1984) for family members. Hopefully it is an incentive for those who are continuing and for those who are starting. We are seeking High School Seniors and College Freshmen for 200809. The amount of money collected will determine the number of scholarships. Our goal is to award 2 -- one high school level and one college level. An application is attached; we ask that you complete it fully.

Specific criteria for applying are as follows:

1. Complete the following application for the 2008/2009 years. This scholarship is for BCMS Family Members Only. You must tell how you are connected to the BCMS Family. Please type the application. 2. Applicant should be a High School Senior with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Please provide name of school, location, and proof of average (preferably transcript), and proof of college acceptance; or 3. College Enrollee (Freshman/Sophomore) with a

e are looking forward to everyone joining us on July 23 – 26, 2009. It is not too late to register. Submitting your registration information is vital to the planning and preparation of the reunion. How much does it cost to attend? FAMILY REGISTRATION FEES* are as follows: Child: 1 – 3 years old - Free 4 – 11 years old - $55.00 Teens: 12 –17 years old - $95.00 Adults: 18 – Older - $120.00 (if paid by June 15th.)

Family Tidbits & Happenings Shamis Abdi will be attending The Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY this fall. She will be a Masters in Business Administration candidate for the Class of 2011 and will be studying finance and not-for-profit management. Shamis has also recently returned stateside from a 2-month journey to Dakar, Senegal. Chelsea Carter was inducted into the National Art Honors Society. Chelsea is rising 12th grader in the Specialty School for the Arts at Thomas Dale High School, Richmond, VA. She is the daughter of George and Pamela Gilliard Thompson. Ava Dillard is a 2009 graduate of Bethune-Cookman University in Daytona Beach, Fla. Ava is the granddaughter of Alma Kelson. Melissa Dixon, daughter of Jeanette Singleton Dixon

graduated from Lincoln University, Lincoln, PA. Melissa is the 2003 recipient of the BCMS Scholarship. Maurice Gilliard has been promoted to Sargeant in the U.S. Army and is assigned to Ft. Campbell, KY. His proud parents are Dwayne and Monika Gilliard. Tara Heyward received her Bachelor of Science degree from Marymount University on May 11th from Marymount University in Health Science. Tara is currently enrolled in Masters Program for Health Promotions Management. She is the daughter of George and Cheryl Heyward, and the granddaughter of Nevada G. Heyward. Bessie Mitchell Holland was honored at Canaan Baptist Church, Beufort, SC. The appreciation event recognized her many years of services as Associate Pastor.

Michael Trenton Hollis III graced us with his presence on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at 8:20pm weighing 7 lbs. 5 oz and 19.75 inches long. Christine Kelson, granddaughter of Alma Dilbert Kelson, received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Morris College, in Sumter SC. Christine was the 2005 recipient of the BCMS Scholarship. Charles Eric Mackey, the grandson of Alma Kelson, graduated from Catholic University in Washington, DC. Starrcree Mixon helped to bring home one of the two state (Continued on page 4)

championships from the state track meet held in Columbia, SC on May, 16, 2009 for Wade Hampton High School. Starrcree took the gold medal in the girl’s 800 meter race. She has been running since she was in the

seventh grade and she finally came in first claiming All State in the 800 meter with a personal all time best of 2:23.04. She also placed 3rd in the 400 meter with a 59.55 time. Starrcree Mixon is a 2009 graduate of Wade Hampton High School. She will be attending Spartanburg Methodist College in Spartanburg, SC on a 2-year Scholarship in the fall.
