CHARTERED FEB., 1948

z The week in photos z

This past week was a busy one for local Rotarians. Page 2 has some photos of the District 5170 Roast and Toast event as well as the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of which our club was a sponsor!

9th Annual Relay a 1st for Us Twenty-five years ago one man decided he would do something to bring awareness to and raise money for the fight against cancer. He raised a little over $20,000. From that humble beginning, “Relay for Life” events have sprouted up all over the country. One of the biggest and best organized event is right here in Campbell. The Relay for Life walk-a-thon is in its 9th year here. 2009 marked the first year that our club took part in the festivities sponsored by the American Cancer Society. We were Bronze Sponsors of the event which got our logo on the event’s website and on the back of the T-shirt that walkers wore around the track at the Campbell Community Center. For our first attempt at putting together a team, we must say that we were small, but

disorganized! But each participant kept saying, “Next year....” followed by an idea for our camp site, or member involvement, or how to set out a bunch of luminarias, how to bring food, etc. Sponsoring the event was the brainchild of Jerry Cummings, and among those who were seen walking the track during the 24 hour event were John, Rick and Ravi (photo), Ravi’s wife, Meera, John’s wife, Pam, Justin Toms, Ann Height and Bill and Emilie Highley. Also on hand were Janine Payton and Ruth Kohan who supported other teams in this very worthwhile effort. Others also took part: more names later. Just as Rotary International is taking on the fight against Polio, so is the American Cancer Society fighting the dreaded disease of cancer.

Debunking this Saturday Maybe not as much fun as a circus, maybe more fun!!! This Saturday we will debunk PastPresident John at Mama Mia’s from 12 Noon to 3:00 PM. Good food, good beverages, good fun and a once in a year opportunity to rip some poor hapless fellow who just spent the last year doing all he could to bring peace, love and harmony to the world. Be there or be square!
