The 2009 racing series kicked off with

The Thawout Series - 4 Sundays in April. Frigid weather kept boats off the water. With everything from sub-zero temperatures to 18 plus inches of snow we saw it all. As warmer days seemed to be on the horizon more boats crept into the marina and readied for the upcoming season. We got a total of three races over two days with 5 boats sailing (2 j24s, 1 U20, 1 Satana 20, 1 Lightning & 1 420).

Racing’s in full swing…do you know where your red flag is?

As we move into the warmer months, we’re all getting out on the water more. The new rules seem to be helping reduce close calls at marks, but I’m sure everyone still has some questions about specific details. As boats meet and greet windward and leeward, it’s important and necessary for us all to understand the rules and use the tools available (namely the protest process) to assure those situations are resolved fairly. Unless we all play by the rules, the fun will diminish, boats will drop out of the fleets and it will be difficult to justify continuing running races. The more boats the better! Give the article below (Editor’s Letter from Sailing World, June 2009) a read to better understand how we can all have more fun by playing by the rules. Have a great spring series and get that boat out on the water! Best regards, John Arendt Portsmouth Fleet Captain

The weather managed to clear out on Saturday morning with partly cloudy skies and building breeze from the east. The breeze was fairly consistent from the east varying from 12-18 knots. Five races were completed on each course providing some great on the water racing competition. Many fleets had extremely tight scores. The competitors were brought in off the water around 5:00 pm to be welcomed by the Cherry Creek Marina staff with cold drink and food. The buzz was in the air as to the possibility of some exciting outcomes pending Sundays events. As typical with Colorado sailing this time of the year the breeze failed to arrive on Sunday. Race Committee made the decision to call the regatta at 1:00 pm after the racers had been kept ashore under postponement since 11:00 am. A great weekend of racing and social activities despite the lack of breeze on Sunday. A big thanks to all the sponsors who helped make the regatta a huge success. Cherry Creek Marina Mt.
