Food pantry items for October are canned vegetables. The pantry is starting to rebound but really is in need of almost everything, especially crackers (Saltines) and meat (tuna and Spam)! Please make a donation if you can. Thanks! Celebration Women's Ministry is once again running the Bake Sale at our annual Country Store and Harvest Cafe on Saturday, October 17th. We are looking for volunteers, and we need your help!! Are you willing to bake something yummy? If you don't like to cook, are you willing to "man the booth" for a few hours on the 17th? In the past we have sold individual servings AND whole cakes, pies, brownies, etc. So, if you are willing to bake, please bring your goods in disposable (or sellable) containers (not your favorite Pyrex that you want back!). Please let Mandy Bryan know how you can help.

Ramblings: Addicted to More Hi, I’m John. (Hi, John.) I’m addicted to more. All of my life I have been told that the way to happiness was to get more. More money. More stuff. More power. More education. More food. More fun. More...more...more. I have devoted my life to satisfying my addiction. The great thing about this addiction is that there are always people who are willing to help you get more. However there is a problem with this constant pursuit of more...there’s always more to get. The more you get the more you want. When you finally get all that you want you see someone who has more than you. This just makes you want more. The thing about this addiction is that it starts small. When I was young I just wanted to stay out to 11 p.m. on the weekend nights. I knew that if I could ever stay out that late that my life would be good. However, once I stayed out until 11 I saw that someone else got to stay out until midnight. It was on. I had to have more. When I joined the Air Force I wanted to make E-4 (a midlevel rank) before my four years was up. If I could just get the power and authority that came with the stripes, my life would be good. However, once I made it I saw one of my friends from basic training had been

promoted to E-5. I had to have more. When we first got married I wanted to fill our apartment with nice furniture and other stuff. I knew if we ever had all nice stuff we would be happy. However, when we filled our apartment with all the stuff we could, we noticed that some people had bigger places and more stuff. I had to have more. When I started preaching I started as an associate pastor. However, associate pastors don’t have power, authority, influence, money, etc. I needed more and knew that when I became the senior pastor of a church that life would be good. But then I became the pastor and saw that there were other pastors with bigger churches, bigger staffs, more money, more influence, etc. Through all of this God was calling out to me. The trouble was that I wasn’t listening to God. I was listening to John and the world. God wanted me to be happy and content. He wanted me to know that happy is not a destination that is achieved through getting, but a journey of giving. My hope is that over the next couple of weeks we will join together on this journey of getting more contentment and joy in our lives. I am looking forward to seeing other addicts start the recovery process. IGS, John

Opportunity to help those who struggle You might be a parent struggling to accept your gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender child. You might be gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender and wondering how to tell your family or friends or dealing with other related issues. When the church chooses extravagant welcome and hospitality, it makes itself stronger and truer to its core Gospel. An organization called Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays ( PFLAG ) can help. If interested in helping the church help "others" or if in need of help contact Leah Murphy at 281-384-3901

FUMC’s newest outreach project

Pumpkin Patch

This Christmas season, FUMC will launch a new outreach project, “Lunches of Love.” This rewarding mission project is designed to feed many underprivileged children in our neighborhood. FUMC will provide sack lunches Monday through Friday for children from Bowie Elementary during the Christmas holidays, spring break, and summer vacation. Without “Lunches of Love,” many of these children would go hungry during the day while school is not in session. We will need volunteers of all ages (adults and children) to make sandwiches and pack and distribute lunches at three drop-off sites. This is a wonderful opportunity not only to help those directly around our church, but also for members to join together for fellowship and service to our neighbors. Watch for more info and details. Contact Adriane Gray or Jennifer Hartmann with any questions.

Hey, Youth! This weekend my dad was working out in the yard. It's something he really likes to do and so you can find him out there most Saturday mornings. Well, this Saturday he decided that what he really wanted to do was lay a rock path around the side of the house. I was home but he went out alone, bought the bags of rocks, loaded them, unloaded them, put them in the wheelbarrow, pushed the wheelbarrow around to where he wanted the rocks, and then laid out all the rocks. All this lifting, pushing, pulling, and bending resulted in two things: a beautiful rock path and one very hurt father! His back was hurting so bad that he wasn't even able to sit comfortably. This got me thinking...how often do we take on too much? How often do we take on all the responsibility, all the work, the whole load, just because we don't want to ask for help. I was at the house and I would have been happy to help, if I had known what he was doing. But we are stubborn sometimes and don't want to ask for what we need. But the truth is we can't do it alone. We HAVE to have help or we are going to get hurt. Life can be really tough and sometimes more is demanded of us than we can bear alone. But God doesn't ask us to go through life alone! He wants us to ask for help, from Him always, and from each other, too! And when we ask for help God will give us what we need (sound familiar?). Here's the thing: If my dad had asked for my help, we could have talked while we were working and caught up on all the things going on in each others' lives. We would have gotten to spend some time together, gotten closer, and in the end come away with a really great rock path that we could both enjoy...pain free! The hard times are gonna come and you are going to have to bear burdens way too big for you...but if you ask God for help, He'll be there for you. And when the good times come back around (and they always do!) you will have strengthened your relationship with Him and together you can celebrate the beautiful things that accomplished ...together! In His Love, Becca Parents and Volunteers! We will be having a meeting on Sunday, October 11, at 4 p.m.! Your presence and participation are crucial to the success of our youth group, so please plan to be there! Bring your calendar.
