President’s Message___________________________________________ Aloha! We have a big year ahead of us and I’m looking forward to it all. I’m honored to have a great bunch of people on our Board this year. They’ll serve the chapter well, I’m sure. As we begin this year we’re setting chapter goals for the coming months. As always we’re focused on the Jaycees aim to ‘create leaders through community service’. We want to give our members the opportunity to challenge themselves and grow – with the full support and backing of your chapter. Our other primary goal is to keep HCJ growing. We’re setting our sights on adding 30 new members to our rolls as of December 31st, 2009. Please help us reach this target. If you have friends or family who’d make good members, let us know how we can help get them into the chapter. And, just as importantly, let us know how we can meet the needs and goals of these prospective members. Like every year, we’re starting with the ‘Night In Chinatown’ festival. We need as much help as possible, especially because we’re running a food booth for the very first time. Don’t worry – you don’t have to do any cooking! We need members all day for: setup, the Parade, the performance stages and the HCJ booth. Let us know if you can help with ‘Night In Chinatown’ – email us - [email protected] - or call us – 342-2729. If you’re looking for a nice outdoor activity, Go Hiking with Anthony Sato! He’s taking members and friends out on the Nuuanu-Judd trail on Saturday, January 17, 11AM. Email ([email protected]) or call (554-3651) Anthony for more info. Lastly, we have the Year End Convention coming up! See the info on page 5 for details. We’d love to see you there so come out and support your chapter! See you at the projects Sincerely, Jonathan Cook 58h President, “Forging New Leaders” Phone: 342-2737 / Email: [email protected]

Best Wishes To Past President Mark Nakashima! Mark is starting off his 1st term as State Representative for District 1. HCJ sends its warmest Aloha for a great year at the Capitol! We know you’ll make your chapter proud –

Hale Ho’omalu Collection

Items Needed For Women’s Shelter! Hale Ho’omalu is a women’s shelter on Molokai that takes in victims of abuse as well as their children. Services include a 24-hour crisis line, emergency shelter and support for victims of domestic violence. The shelter is always in need and HCJ has worked to support them in the past. We are once again doing so this year. Often when the ladies arrive at the shelter they have nothing but the clothes on their back. It’s our wish to provide some of the essentials to assist Hale Ho’omalu and the women and children who have little to call their own in a time of trouble. We are asking members and friends to bring donated items to the Saturday, January 31st Year End Convention Banquet. They will be taken from there and sent over to Molokai for immediate use. Past President Yvette Hirai led this effort in past years and she is helping once again. We are asking for these items: -

Toiletries, especially toothbrushes, toothpaste and soap Children’s socks and underwear (New, please) Children’s’ Clothing (any size, New or Gently Used) Women’s Clothing (any size, New or Gently Used)

Please bring these items to the banquet at the Oahana Hotel or give them to someone who is attending. If you have any questions, contact us by phone or email: Jonathan Cook [email protected] / 342-2737

2009 A & I Banquet____________________________________________ On January 3rd your chapter performed an annual ritual – holding the Awards & Installation Banquet, this time at the historic Natsunoya Tea House. President Lily Fung’s distinguished year would be honored, while she in turn gave recognition to those who served the chapter under her tenure. But first, the food had to be eaten. This is Hawaii, after all.

Jon’s inaugural speech focused on the challenges of this year helmed by new, hungry members. Especially significant was the announced goal of adding 30 new chapter members this year. It’s an ambitious goal that will need all the efforts of the current membership. All that was left to do was take some group pictures, attempt the Electric Slide once again and then talk story until the management threw us out.

With the filling up out of the way, President Lily got her awards underway. Along with recognizing current members, John Cummings was given the Lifetime Award and Gordon Goo was honored for his continued mentoring and guidance. Lily’s farewell speech brought laughter with a fond, yet funny, look back at her year and the people who made it stand out. With that formal goodbye done, we were shown an excellent year-end video done by Wes Kam. It brought a lot of good memories up as well as showing yet another great talent of Wes’.

After the 2008 farewells were done, it was time to welcome in the 2009 team. Our new board was brought up and formally sworn in by our incoming Hawaii State President, Bobby Agpaoa. Immediately after, the 2009 President, Jon Cook, took his pledge, again led by Bobby. The formal passing of the Dragon Trophy and Ceremonial Sword from Lily to Jon followed. Lily immediately warned him about waving the sword around. Jon, of course, didn’t listen. Luckily, no one was hurt.
