Balkans Chancellor Count Camillo Cavour

Explanation The region of southeastern Europe including Serbia, Bulgaria, Romania, and Greece. Term meaning prime minister of the government. He was named prime minister by Victor Emmanuel of Italy and wanted to end the rule of Austria in Italy, creating a united Italy.

Czar

The term for ruler of the country during the years of the monarchy.

Duma

The name of the Russian parliament established by the czar in order to prevent rebellion.

Franco-Prussian War of 1870 Franz Joseph Giuseppe Garibaldi

A conflict between Prussia and France that began in 1870 in which France was quickly defeated and had to agree to a humiliating peace treaty. The emperor of Austria-Hungary that ruled from 1848 to 1916. He was an Italian patriot that led his "red-shirts" into many of the battles that led to the unification of Italy.

He created a secret organization whose goal was to unify Italy into Giuseppe Mazzini a free and independent republic nation rather than a constitutional monarchy. Home rule Kaiser

The self-government of people or a nation. A term meaning "emperor" in German.

Term coined by Bismarck meaning "battle for civilization."

Napoleon III

The first president, and last monarch, of France ruling from 1841 to 1870.

Otto von Bismarck

He was born in Prussia to a wealthy landowning family, became a diplomat and then led the unification of Germany as a powerful chancellor.

Realpolitik

A German term meaning realistic politics based on the needs of the state or country.

Reich

A German term meaning "empire."

Romanovs

The royal family that ruled Russia from 1613 till 1917.

Slavs

The name of Eastern European ethnic groups that spoke related languages including Czechs, Slovaks, Poles, Romanians, Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes.

Sun Yixian

He was born to poor parents in China but rose to become the first president of the Chinese Republic in 1911.

The Meiji Victor Emmanuel

Japanese term meaning "enlightened rule." He was the first king of a unified Italy from 1861-1878.

Wilhelm I

He was the first emperor of a unified Germany from 1871 to 1888.

Wilhelm II

He became the second emperor of Germany in 1888 to his abdication of the thrown in 1918.

Ziabutsu

Groups of powerful bankers and industrial families that had a lot of control in Japan.
