Objectives: Differentiate formal speech style from frozen speech style Identify social situations in which each speech style is appropriate to use Observe the appropriate language forms in using a particular speech style

Formal Speech It uses formal words and expressions Most often seen in writing than in speaking This speech style is expected to be presented in complete sentence with specific word usage
Examples of Formal Speech are: Sermons, Statements, State of the Nation Address, Announcements.
Frozen Speech Also known as “fixed speech” This speech style is rarely or never change. It is “frozen” in time and content As most highly formal style, It uses complex grammatical sentence structure and vocabulary known only to experts in a particular field Examples of Frozen speech are: The pledge of Allegiance, The preamble of the Constitution, A bibliographic reference, Laws In speech, register refers to “a variety of language or level of usage, as determined by degree of formality and choice of
vocabulary, pronunciation, and syntax, according to the communicative purpose, social context, and standing of the user.”
