Friday Bulletin Weekly Publication for Middle School Parents

From the Middle School Office

ISSUE # 08 WEEK OF SEPTEMBER 28 TO OCTOBER 02, 2009

Dear Parents: This week was a busy one for our students and teachers as they engaged in various team building activities at school, Island Cove, Villa Escudero and Caliraya. As your children return from the trips, please engage them in conversation about how they spent their time and what they learned about themselves and others. We hope they gained some valuable experiences and established some new friendships. As we continue with the school year, rest assured that the experiences and memories will be kept alive and built upon through the Homebase program. We are in the final weeks of the Diaper Drive, and many of the middle school students have taken the challenge to bring in diapers to support Chosen Children’s Village (CCV), which is a residential care facility for special needs children. CCV is one of the organizations through which students can get involved in service learning, and in the Middle School it is our chosen organization to sponsor. On Saturday, October 3 there will be a trip to CCV to deliver the diapers that have been collected. Students are encouraged to participate and parents are welcomed to join, too. The MS Student Council has been busily preparing for the upcoming Middle School Parties. The first party on Friday, October 2 will be for the Grade 5 and Grade 6 students. The second party on Friday, October 9 will be for the Grade 7 and Grade 8 students. Both events will run from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Permission slips will be distributed to students through Homebase. In order to attend, your child must submit a signed permission slip and purchase a ticket. Please be advised that students are expected to attend the duration of the party. In the event that a student must leave before the end of the party, it is requested that a parent notify the office in writing or by phone in advance. When informing the office of the early pick-up, please tell us who will pick up your child and the time so that the MS Office can inform security. Please understand that we request this information to ensure the safety of the students in the rare event of them leaving an event early. We encourage all students to attend their respective party and are looking forward to 100% participation. The parties will be a great opportunity to spend time with friends! Please be advised that the next MS Parent Coffee is scheduled for Tuesday, October 6 starting at 7:45 A.M. We hope you can join us. Sincerely, Danielle Fredericks Middle School Principal

Clarissa Sayson Middle School Assistant Principal

From the Guidance Office Rethinking Parenting: How can rethinking our assumptions about parenting help us bridge the gap between what we do and what we want? Last year at this time, the PS-12 counseling department introduced Rethinking Parenting as a replacement for Systematic Training for Effective Parenting (STEP) groups that happened in the past. Based on the overwhelmingly positive feedback, counselors will be running a similar (not the same) course again this semester beginning Thursday, October 1, 2009, and finishing on Thursday, December 10, 2009. The group will meet from 8:00-10:00 A.M. in Room 1057. This 9-session course will begin with exploring your long-term objectives for your children. Through selected readings, discussions, and activities participants will consider whether what they are doing will help reach these goals. Themes in the course include effective communication and relationship building. Additionally, this session will consider the topic of anxiety—where it comes from, and how it is perpetuated in our interactions and expectations. For course registration, please contact Myrna in the Elementary Office. Please note this is a 9 week course requiring regular attendance and participation. It is not open for “drop-ins”.
