Why is your patient taking this medication?

Mechanism of action and indications chemotherapy-induced emesis; postsurgical and diabetic gastric statis; small bowel intubation in radiographic procedures espohageal reflux nausea and vomiting when nasogastric suction is undesirable

IVP

q12 prn

Rate: Infuse slowly over at least 15-30 minutes. Max rate = 5mg/min

10mg q6-8 hr

For IV meds, compatability with IV drips and/or solutions Compatability: droperidol Incompatability: None Nursing Implications (what to focus on) Contraindications/warnings/interactions Hypersensitivity possible GI obstruction or hemorrhage; seizure disorders; Parkinson's disease; depression; diabetes (may alter response to insulin); increased incidence of extrapyramidal reactions Common side effects drowsiness; extrapyramidal reactions; restlessness; anxiety; depression; irritability; tardive dyskinesia; arrhythmias; hypertension; hypotension; constipation; diarrhea; dry mouth; nausea. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome Lab value alterations caused by medicine hepatic funtion test results increased serum prolactin and aldosterone concentrations

Blocks dopamine receptors in chemoreceptor trigger zone of the CNS. Stimulates motility of the upper GI tract and accelerates gastric emptying Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC, or herbal medicines (ask patient specifically) CNS depressants; alcohol; antidepressants; antihistamines; opiod analygesics; sedative/hypnotics; cyclosporine; GI orally administered drugs; general anesthesia; Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication anesthesia; haloperidol; phenothiazines; opiods; may cause drowsiness; avoid use of alcohol; report involuntary movements anticholinergics; MAOIs; of eyes, face, or limbs succinylcholine; levodopa; tacrolimus
