Why is your patient getting this medication Treatment of nausea from opioid analgesics and acute pain

Route IVP

Time/frequency Q 4-6 hr PRN Nausea

Normal dosage range 1-2 mg/kg q 4-6hr

For IV meds, compatibility with IV drips and/or solutions D5W, 0.9% NaCl, D5/0.45% NaCl, Ringer’s solution or LR RATE OF ADMINISTRATION: Infuse slowly maximum rate 5 mg/min over at least 15-30 min. Mechanism of action and indications Nursing Implications (what to focus on) (Why med ordered) Contraindications/warnings/interactions Blocks dopamine receptors in chemoreceptor trigger Hypersensitivity. HEMAT: methemoglobinemia, neutropenia, luekopenia, agranulocytosis. Interactions with other patient drugs, OTC or herbal Lab value alterations caused by medicine medicines (ask patient specifically) May alter hepatic function test results. May cause Additive CNS depression with other CNS depressants increased serum prolactin and aldosterone concentrations. Be sure to teach the patient the following about this medication Take as directed, may cause drowsiness, avoid driving.
