The Agar Fort and Fatehpur Sikri, the abandoned city of Emperor Akbar, are other fine examples of the great building skills of the Mughals. AJANTA: The Buddhist Caves of Ajanta predate the Ellora Caves and are justly famous for their radiant paintings. The 29 Caves are cut deep into the steep face of a deep rock gorge. There are some fine sculptures that should be viewed as the prelude to the still more magnificent Ellora sculptures. (Also see Ellora Caves). AURANGABAD: Aurangabad is a base for visitors to the famous Ellora & Ajanta caves. These are all on Buddhist themes and were carved in the 6th – 7th century. Attractive shopping includes Kid’s Kemp, reputedly the largest shop in all Asia. BHUBANESHWAR: KNOWN AS Temple Town and Cathedral City due to its many temples in the extravagant Oriyan Style, it is a sprawling, rapidly expanding city. The most notable features of the temples are the soaring towers and the intricate carvings that cover every exposed surface of the temples. BADRINATH: Situated in the lap of Nar-Narayan Parvat, with the towering Neelkanth peak (6,597mt) in the background, Badrinath is one of the most revered Hindu Shrines of India. It has been said that “there were many sacred spots of pilgrimage in the heaven, earth and the other world but neither is there any equal to Badrinath nor shall there be one.” It is believed that to revive the lost prestige of Hinduism and to unite the country in one bond, Adi Guru Sri Shankaracharya built four pilgrimage centers in four corners of India. Among them were Badrikashram in the north, Rameshwaram in the south, dwarkapuri in the west and Jagannath Puri in the east. Badrinath situated at an elevation of 3,133mt is considered to be amongst the most pious. BILASPUR: Overlooking the vast Govind Sager reservoir of the Bhakra Dam, Bilaspur is on the main highway between Chandigarh and Mandi. It has some old and interesting temples. A little ahead of the town is a well-located Restaurant Lake View with a fine outlook over the reservoir. BHARATPUR: Bharatpur was an unusual Kingdom of Rajasthan because it was the only one that was ruled by a dynasty of Jats – peasant sons of the soil – rather than Rajputs. Under its aggressive rulers, the kingdom of Bharatpur became a major military and political force in the 18th and 19th centuries, its armies sweeping the plains of northern India, virtually olds and masters of all they surveyed. However, the history of Bharatpur goes back far, far earlier, to the great ancient kingdom of Matsyadesh that fluorides here around the 5ht century BC. There are several fine archeological remains of this civilization that you can see in the Bharatpur Museum.
