System Engineering 2 – Tutorial Class:Monday 5~7pm Present: McGlasson, Pillay, Tivari, Guo Zhou, Vu, D’sa, Shingadia, Kafle, Kong, Wong, Koh, Yang. Chairperson: T Ferris. Secretary: K. McGlasson. Current Business: D’sa. Needs – Customer Perspective: Why would someone want to do it? 1. Desire to look at Earth from space. 2. Desire to look at space from space. 3. Thrill of being in space. 4. Living in a space station. 5. Experience weightlessness. Customer Survey: By 2020, 50 orbital tourists per year. 7.5% of Americans are prepared to spend $100,000 for a trip. Japanese are ready to spend a year’s salary. First person was 60 years of age. Tivari Needs – Brainstorming Session: Need craft to reach space. Shall be within 4 hours drive of Adelaide. Shall able to climb 100km in altitude (definition of “in space”). Shall be fun. Able to land. Meet licence/requirements set by governing bodies like FAA/AST. Need to re-use craft components. Shall be green & environmentally friendly. Cheap as possible. Financially optimise passengers per trip. Minimal training required. Fitness test (Customer). Safe as possible. Minimal ground support required. Parking (Customer & Spacecraft). Customer support (Hotel etc.). Transport to centre. Logistics. Staff training. (Pilot, Crew, Ground). Space pod. Management of flying times. Emergency procedures (Fire, etc.). Site Location (to fabricate spaceship). Site for spaceport (Viewing for family & friends).

Marketing. Navigational Tools. Radar. GPS. Trajectory. System health and status. Moving map. Warning messages. Management of Flights. Flight times, number & durations. Spare parts. Maintenance of components. T. Ferris: Question: What are the fundamental needs? • Transport paying customers into outer space. • Provide a space experience to customers. Need is to have a system for providing a service: lifting passengers into space (100km up). Needs – relate to what has to be done. Produce: One paragraph to express the need. Shingadia: Write a paragraph in clear English to “express the need”, not in lawyer talk. Due date: Tuesday 8th August. T Ferris: What students need to do before next week’s tutorial session. • Everyone to bring a list of needs; 3~5 per person by next week. • Start creating a list of requirements for discussion next week.
