SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY FOR STUDENTS
I n t ro d uction DEFINITION SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY
Any study that answers the question, about any given topic. 1. Emphases
a. whole Bible
b. to us
c. today 2. Meaning of “systematic” 3. Meaning of “doctrine” 4. Every Christian does “Systematic theology”
Initial Assumptions of Course A. The Bible is
true
B. God exists and
is who the Bible
says He is. Relationship between doctrine and life A. Sound doctrine is a necessary part of Christian maturity (Eph. 4:12-14; Titus1:9, 2:1-6,10; Col. 1:9-10) B. False doctrine harms the church, turns people away form the faith (Titus 1:11, Rom. 1:18, 21, 25; 1 Tim. 1:5-6, 10, 4:1, 6:20-21; Acts 20:27) Christian” churches INTRODUCTION
What does the whole Bible say to us today.
Introduction to Systematic Theology How should Christians study systematic theology? (= how should we study Scripture?)
A. With prayer (Ps. 119:18; 1 Cor. 2:14;1:17)
B. With humility (1 Pet. 5:5; Jas. 1:19-20, 1 Cor. 8:1)
C. With reason
1. “We are free to use our reasoning abilities to
draw deductions from any passage of
Scripture as long as those deductions do not
contradict the clear teaching of some other
passage of Scripture” (Isa. 55:8-9; Ps. 139:6;
Rom. 11:33-34)
2. Paradox is acceptable in systematic theology
(“a seemingly contradictory statement that may
nevertheless be true”); (inevitable with
finite understanding)
3. Contradiction is not acceptable (Ps. 119:160)
D. With help from others (1 Cor. 12:28)
E. With rejoicing and praise (Deut. 6:5-6; Ps. 139:17;
Rom. 11:33-36) Causes of theological error
A. Not: obscurity of Scripture
B. But: usually personal sins
1. Pride (1 Tim. 6:4; 2 Pet. 2:18)
2. Greed (1 Tim. 6:5; 2 Pet. 2:3, 14-15)
3. Cowardice (in face of cultural trends (Gal.
2:12, 5:11; Luke 6:22-23)
4. Laziness, negligence in studying Scripture
(then following personal leaders instead) (Ps.
1:2; Gal. 2:13; 2 Pet. 2:2)
5. Other personal sins (2 Pet. 2:13-14, 18-19; 1
Tim. 1:9-10, 19-20) More important / less important doctrines
A. Does it affect other doctrines?
B. Does it affect peopleʼs faith, Christian life?
C. P.S. Note that people can take any minor doctrine
and make it “major” (split churches)

SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY FOR STUDENTS
T h e Wo rd s o f G o d FOCUS OF OUR STUDY THE WRITTEN WORDS OF GOD
The Focus of Our Study In the study of systematic theology the focus is on Godʼs Word in written form, the Bible. Josh. 1:8, Ps. 1:1-2, 2 Tim. 3:16 Questions for personal application Would you pay more attention if God spoke to you with a voice from heaven or through a living prophet as in the Old Testament? What does the fact that God spoke to people in different ways tell us about the nature of God and what he delights in ?
THE WORDS OF GOD
What are the different forms of the Word of God?
The Words of God
“The Word of God” as a Person: Jesus Christ
1. The Bible sometimes refers to the Son of God as
“the Word of God.” John 1:1, 14; Rev. 19:13 “The Word of God” as Speech by God: Various forms
1. God Decrees
i. A decree of God is a word of God that causes
something to happen or even causes things to
come into being. Gen 1:3, 24; Ps. 33:6
ii. The decrees of God also assure the
continuing existence of all things. Heb. 1:3
2. Godʼs Words of Personal Address
i) God speaking directly with people. Gen.
2:16-17; 3:16-17; Ex. 20:1-3; Matt 3:17
ii) These instances of personal address are
always seen in Scripture as the actual words of
God. The words of “personal address” are also
human words spoken in intelligible human
language.
iii)People are wrong to object that if God speaks
in human language it must contain errors and
mistakes
3. Godʼs Words as Speech Through Human Lips
i) God often raised up prophets through whom
he spoke.
ii) These are prophets are ordinary humans
speaking with ordinary human language, but
these facts do not diminish the authority of
the words. Deut. 18:18-20; Jer 1:7, 9
iii) Anyone who falsely claimed to be speaking
for the Lord was severely punished. Deut.
18:20-22; Ezek 13:1-7
4. Godʼs Words in Written Form (the Bible)
i) There are numerous instances where Godʼs
words were put in written form: Ex. 31:18;32:16;
Deut 31:9-13
ii) Further additions were made to the collection
of Godʼs written words: Josh. 24:26; Isa 30:8;
Jer 30:2; John 14:26; 1 Cor 14:37
iii) Several benefits from the writing down of
Godʼs words
(1) More accurate preservation of Godʼs words
(2) Opportunity for repeated inspection
(3) Accessibility
Still considered to be Godʼs words: just as true;
just as authoritative; people have just as much

THE WORDS OF GOD
T h e C a n o n o f S cript ure DEFINITIONS CANON
The canon of Scripture is the list of all the books that belong in the Bible.
WHAT ABOUT THE OTHER BOOKS? (1) they often do not claim for themselves the same authority (2) they were not regarded as canonical by the Jews; (3) they were not considered Scripture by Jesus and the apostles (4) they contain teachings inconsistent with the rest of the Bible. The Gospel according to Thomas, 114 (110 AD): Simon Peter said to them: Let Mary go away from us, for women are not worthy of life. Jesus said: Lo, I shall lead her, so that I may make her a male, that she too may become a living spirit, resembling you males. For every woman who makes herself a male will enter the kingdom of heaven.
THE CANON OF SCRIPTURE
What belongs in the Bible and what does not?
The Canon of Scripture The canon of Scripture is the list of all the books that belong in the Bible. We must not underestimate the importance of determining which books belong in the Bible because: (1) The words of Scripture are the words by which we nourish our spiritual lives. Deut. 32:47 (2) To add to or subtract from Godʼs words would be to prevent Godʼs people from obeying him fully. Deut. 4:2 A) The Old Testament Canon The Bible itself testifies to the historical development of the canon.
1) The earliest collection of written words was the Ten
Commandments, which God himself wrote on two
stone tablets. Ex. 32:16
2) The collection of authoritative words from God grew
in size throughout the time of Israelʼs history.
B) The New Testament Canon
1) The New Testament canon begins with the writings
of the apostles, who were given the ability from the
Holy Spirit to recall and interpret accurately the words
and deeds of Jesus. John 14:26, John 16:13-14
2) Some of the New Testament writings are placed
alongside the Old Testament canon as part of
Scripture. 2 Peter 3:16, 1 Tim 5:17-18
3) If we accept the arguments for the traditional views
of authorship of the New Testament writings, then we
have most of the New Testament in the canon
because of direct authorship by the apostles.

Do you think that there are any errors in the Bible? Why or why not? Where in the Bible does it say that we should not change the Bible?
THE CANON OF SCRIPTURE
T h e In er ra n c y o f S cript ure
DEFINITION INERRANCY
The inerrancy or Scripture means that Scripture in the original manuscripts does not affirm any thing that is contrary to fact.Ps. 12:6, Prov. 30:5, Num. 23:19
Problems with Denying Inerrancy 1) If we deny inerrancy, a serious moral problem confronts us: May we imitate God and intentionally lie in small matters also? 2) If inerrancy is denied, we begin to wonder if we can really trust God in anything he says. 3) If we deny inerrancy, we essentially make our own human minds a higher standard of truth than Godʼs word itself. 4) If we deny inerrancy, then we must also say that the Bible is wrong not only in minor details but in some of its doctrines as well.
THE INERRANCY OF SCRIPTURE
Are there any errors in the Bible?
The Inerrancy of Scripture A) The Meaning of Inerrancy
1) The inerrancy or Scripture means that
Scripture in the original manuscripts does not affirm
any thing that is contrary to fact. Ps. 12:6, Prov. 30:5,
2) The Bible can be inerrant and still speak in the
ordinary language of everyday speech.
3) The Bible can be inerrant and still include loose or
free quotations. B) Some Current Challenges to Inerrancy
1) The Bible is only authoritative for “faith and
practice.”
a) The purpose of Scripture is to teach us in
areas that concern “faith and practice” only, so it
is possible that the Scripture makes false
statements in other areas, such as historical or
scientific facts.
b) Often referred to as a belief in the infallibility
of Scripture.
c) Response to this objection:
The Bible itself does not make any restriction on
the kinds of subjects to which it speaks
truthfully. 1 Tim. 3:16, Ps. 12:6, Ps 119:96
2) The term inerrancy is a poor term.
3) The biblical writers “accommodated” their massages
in minor details to the false ideas current in their day,
and affirmed or taught those ideas in an incidental
way.
4) Inerrancy overemphasizes the divine aspect of
Scripture and neglects the human aspect.
5) There are some clear errors in the Bible. Where?

DEFINITION CHARACTERISTICS
Being a feature that helps to distinguish a person or thing; distinctive.
We are expected to be able to understand the Bible. 1) In the OT, the people were expected to be able to understand the words of Scripture. Deut. 6:6-7, Ps. 1:1-2, Ps. 19:7, Ps. 119:130 2) In the NT, both Jesus and the apostles have the same expectation. a) Jesus never blames peopleʼs confusion on the obscurity of Scripture. Matt. 12:3, Matt. 21:42, Matt. 22:29 b) Most of the NT epistles are written to entire congregations. 1 Cor. 1:2, Gal. 1:2, Phil. 1:1, Col. 4:16
c) NT authors expect that their Gentile audience would familiarize
themselves with a THE FOUR CHARACTERISTICS OF SCRIPTURE
Four truths we should know about our Bible.
The Four Characteristics of Scripture #1 Authority How do we know that the Bible is Godʼs Word? Explanation and Scriptural Basis The authority of Scripture means that all the words in Scripture are Godʼs words in such a way that to disbelieve or disobey any word of Scripture is to disbelieve or disobey God. “Thus says the LORD.” Deut. 18:18-20, Jer. 1:9 # 2 Clarity Can only Bible scholars understand the Bible rightly? In the OT, the people were expected to be able to understand the words of Scripture. Deut. 6:6-7, Ps. 1:1-2, Ps. 19:7 Explanation and Scriptural Basis The Old Testament and New Testament frequently affirm that Scripture is written in such a way that its teachings are able to be understood by ordinary believers. #3 Necessity For what purposes is the Bible necessary? How much can people know about God without the Bible? The Bible is necessary for knowledge of the gospel. Rom.10:13-17 Summary: The necessity of Scripture means that the Bible is necessary for knowing the gospel, for maintaining spiritual life, and for knowing Godʼs will, but it is not necessary for knowing that God exists or for knowing something about Godʼs character and moral laws. #4 Sufficiency Is the Bible enough for knowing what God wants us to think or do? Definition of the Sufficiency of Scripture The sufficiency of Scripture means that Scripture contained all the words of God he intended his people to have at each stage of redemptive history, and that it now contains everything we need God to tell us for salvation, for trusting him perfectly, and for obeying him perfectly. Salvation 2 Timothy 3:15-16, 1 Peter 1:23 Living the Christian Life 2 Timothy 3:16, Psalms 119:2

THE FOUR CHARACTERISTICS OF SCRIPTURE
SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY FOR STUDENTS
The Existence & Knowability of God
We know that God exists in two ways: 1. All people have an inner sense of God 2. We believe that the evidence that is found in Scripture and in nature. Humanityʼs Inner Sense of God 1) All persons have a deep, inner sense that God exists, they are his creatures, and he is their creator (Rom 1:21) 2) Sinful unbelievers actively or willfully reject some truth about Godʼs existence that they knew. (Rom 1:19, Rom 1:25) 3) Sin leads people to think irrationally and to deny Godʼs existence, and someone thinking irrationally or who has been deceived will say, “There is no God.” (Psa 14:1, Psa 53:1,Psa 10:3-4) 4) In the life of a Christian this inner awareness of God becomes stronger and more distinct. (Rom 8:15, Eph 3:17, Joh 14:23, 1Pe 1:8)
THE EXISTENCE & KNOWABILITY OF GOD
How do we know God exists?
The Existence & Knowability of God Believing the Evidence in Scripture and Nature
1) The Bible everywhere assumes that God exists.
(Gen 1:1)
2) Every created thing gives evidence of Godʼs
existence. (Rom 1:20, Act
14:17, Ps. 19:1-2)
3) Man, in the image of God, most abundantly shows
the existence of God. (Gen. 1:27)
4) The beauty of a snowflake, the majestic power of a
thunderstorm, the skill of a honeybee, the
refreshing taste of cold water, the incredible
abilities of the human hand—all these and thousands
of other aspects of creation simply could not have
come into existence apart from an all-powerful and
all-wise creator. Everything in Scripture and
everything in nature proves clearly that God exists!
5) We are basing our belief not on blind hope apart
from evidence but on an overwhelming amount of
reliable evidence from Godʼs words and
works. obligation to believe and obey. The Necessity for God to Reveal Himself to Us (149)
1) Even general revelation depends on Godʼs choice
to reveal himselfthrough the created order. (Rom.
1:19)
2) If we are to know God personally in salvation, it is
clearly necessary for God to reveal himself to us.
(M att. 11:27; 1 Cor. 1:21; John 1:18)
a) All human beings have a tendency to
misinterpret the revelation
about
God found in nature. (Rom. 1:18, 21, 25)
3) We need the Bible to properly understand any
revelation from God or about him (in nature, history,
our consciences). We can know God truly. (151-152)
1) Although we cannot know God exhaustively, we can
know God truly because all that Scripture tells us
about God is true. (1 John 1:5, 4:8; John 4:24; Rom.
3:26)
2) Moreover, we know God himself, not just facts
about him. (Jer. 9:23-24; John 17:3; 1 John 2:13, 5:20)

by our bodily senses, and is more excellent
than any other kind of existence. John 4:24

never be able to be seen by us, yet God still
shows himself to us through visible,
created things. (John 1:18, 6:46; 1Tim. 1:17,
6:16) B) Mental Attributes
1) Knowledge (Omniscience)
God fully knows himself and all things actual
and possible in one simple and eternal act. (Job
37:16; 1Jo. 3:20; 1Cor. 2:10-11)
2) Wisdom
Definition: Godʼs wisdom means that God
always chooses the best goals and the
best means to those goals. (Romans 16:27, Job
12:13)
3) Truthfulness (and Faithfulness)
a) Definition: Godʼs truthfulness means that he
is the true God, and that all his knowledge and
words are both true and the final standard of
truth. He is the true God. (Jer. 10:10-11; John
17:3)

GOD IN THREE PERSONS
God in Three Persons: The Trinity Three statements summarize the biblical teaching.
1) God is three persons.
a) The fact that God is three persons means that each
person of the Trinity is distinct from the other two
persons. (John 1:1-2, 17:24; 1 John 2:1; Heb. 7:25;
John 14:26; Rom. 8:27; Matt. 28:19; John 16:7; 1 Cor.
12:4-6)
i) The Holy Spirit is a distinct person not just the
power of God. (Eph. 4:4-6; John, 14:26, 15:26;
Rom. 8:26-27; 1 Cor. 2:10; Acts 16:6-7; Acts
8:29; Eph. 4:30)
(a) Passages that would not make sense
if the Holy Spirit is just the “power of
God.” (Luke 4:14; Acts 10:38)
(b) What about 2 Cor. 3:17?
2) Each person is fully God.
a) God the Father is clearly God.
b) The Son is fully God. (John 1:1-4,
20:28, 30-31; Titus 2:13; Rom.
9:5; Isa. 9:6; Col. 2:9)
c) The Holy Spirit is also fully God. (Matt.
28:19; 1 Cor. 12:4-6; 2
Cor. 13:14; Acts 5:3-4; 1Cor. 3:16)
3) There is one God. (Deut. 6:4-5; 1 Kings 8:60;
Isa. 45:5-6, 21-22; 1 Tim. 2:5, Rom.
3:30; 1 Cor. 8:6; James 2:19)
4) Simplistic solutions must all deny one strand
of biblical teaching.
5) All analogies have shortcomings. Ultimately
no analogy adequately teaches about the
Trinity, and all are misleading in significant
ways.
6) God eternally and necessarily exists as the
Trinity. (John 1:3; Col. 1:16; Heb. 1:2; Gen. 1:2;
pJohn 17:5, 24)

GOD IN THREE PERSONS
SYSTEMATIC THEOLOGY FOR STUDENTS
Creation How, why, and when did God create the universe?
What God created is good. 1) If God created the universe to show his glory, we would expect that the universe would fulfill its purpose. 2) At the end of each stage of creation, God saw that what he had done was “good” (Gen 1:4, Gen. 1:10, 12, 18, 21, 25.) 3) At the end of the six days of creation, “God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good” (Gen. 1:31). 4) Even though sin is now in the world, the material creation is still good in Godʼs sight and should be seen as “good” by us as well. (1Ti 4:4-5) 5) This frees us from false asceticism that sees the use and enjoyment of the material creation as wrong. (1Ti 4:1-3) 6) Though the material creation can be misused, we must not let the danger of abusing Godʼs creation keep us from positive, thankful, joyful use of it. (1 Timothy 6:9-10, 6:17-18) CREATION
Creation God created the universe out of nothing
1) Biblical evidence for creation out of nothing
a) Before God began to create the universe,
nothing else existed except God Himself (He
created the universe ex nihilo). (Gen 1:1, Psa
33:6, Psa 33:9, Joh 1:3, Col 1:16, Rev 4:11,
Heb 11:3)
b) Because God created the entire universe out
of nothing there is no matter in the
universe that is eternal. (Psa 90:2)
c) The fact that God created the universe out of
nothing means that it has meaning and
purpose.
2) The creation of the spiritual universe (264)
a) The creation of the entire universe includes
the creation of an unseen, spiritual realm of
existence. (Rev 10:6, Neh 9:6)
b) The New Testament explicitly affirms the
creation of the spiritual realm. (Col 1:16) Creation is distinct from God yet always dependent upon God.
1) God is transcendent, far “above” creation in the
sense that he is greater than creation and
independent of it. (Eph 4:6)
2) God immanent, very much involved in creation, for it
is continually dependent upon him for its existence
and functioning. (Job 12:10, Act 17:25, Heb 1:3)
3) This is distinct from materialism, which would say
that the material universe is all there is.
4) The Scriptural account of Godʼs relation to his
creation is also different from pantheism, which
says that the whole universe is God or is part of God.
a) God has no distinct personality.
b) God changes with the universe.
c) God is no longer holy because of evil in the
universe.
d) The importance of individual human
personalities is lost in the goal of blending with
the universe.
