Second Sunday In Lent March 8, 2009

“A dreadful thing is the love of money! It disables both eyes and ears, and makes men worse to deal with than a wild beast, allowing a man to consider neither conscience nor friendship nor fellowship nor salvation.” — John Chrysostom

We are missional Anglicans seeking the kingdom of God in our hearts, our homes, our church and our world.

you hold my lot. 6The boundary lines have fallen for me

in pleasant places;*

I have a goodly heritage. 7I bless the LORD who gives me counsel;*

in the night also my heart instructs me. 8I keep the LORD always before me;*

because he is at my right hand, I shall not be moved. 9Therefore my heart is glad, and my soul rejoices;*

my body also rests secure. 10For you do not give me up to Sheol,*

or let your faithful one see the Pit. 11You show me the path of life.

In your presence there is fullness of joy;* in your right hand are pleasures for evermore.

The Sermon Please be seated.

9

The Nicene Creed Please stand.

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The Leader and People pray responsively.

Father, we pray for your holy Catholic Church; That we all may be one. Grant that every member of the Church may truly and humbly serve you; That your Name may be glorified by all people. We pray for all bishops, priests, and deacons; That they may be faithful ministers of your Word and Sacraments. We pray for all who govern and hold authority in the nations of the world; That there may be justice and peace on the earth. Give us grace to do your will in all that we undertake; That our works may find favor in your sight. Have compassion on those who suffer from any grief or trouble; That they may be delivered from their distress. Give to the departed eternal rest. Let light perpetual shine upon them. We praise you for your saints who have entered into joy; May we also come to share in your heavenly kingdom. Let us pray for our own needs and those of others. Please offer your prayers of intercession and thanksgiving, either silently or aloud.

12

The Confession of Sin And now, O Father, we pray to you also for our greatest need, the forgiveness of our sins: Have mercy upon us, most merciful Father; in your compassion forgive us our sins, known and unknown, things done and left undone; and so uphold us by your Spirit that we may live and serve you in newness of life, to the honor and glory of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. Priest: Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

The Peace Celebrant People

May the peace of the Lord be always with you. And also with you.

Lenten Sermon Series: The Economy of the Kingdom At a time when our country is facing severe financial crisis, it is essential for Christians to embrace a biblical worldview concerning money. Indeed, as we develop a kingdom perspective on it, we are then able to bear faithful witness to the one true God in every context of our lives. Lenten Journals: Hungry? Feed Yourself Equipping our church to embrace the spiritual disciplines of Bible reading, prayer, journaling, and scripture memorization, this journal serves as a common experience for us throughout Lent. Please pick one up at the usher’s table and dive in; its introduction tells you all you need to know. Morning Prayer: Rite Two Monday through Thursday. 9:30 a.m. Church sanctuary. Bring your 1979 Book of Common Prayer (or use one of ours). The Hymn in Recession Please remain standing and sing.

In Christ Alone In Christ alone my hope is found He is my light, my strength, my song This Cornerstone, this solid ground Firm through the fiercest drought and storm What heights of love, what depths of peace When fears are stilled, when strivings cease My Comforter, my all in all Here in the love of Christ I stand In Christ alone, who took on flesh Fullness of God in helpless Babe This gift of love and righteousness Scorned by the ones He came to save 'Til on that cross as Jesus died The wrath of God was satisfied For ev'ry sin on Him was laid Here in the death of Christ I live There in the ground His body lay Light of the world by darkness slain Then bursting forth in glorious day Up from the grave He rose again And as He stands in victory Sin's curse has lost its grip on me For I am His and He is mine Bought with the precious blood of Christ No guilt in life, no fear in death This is the pow'r of Christ in me From life's first cry to final breath Jesus commands my destiny No pow'r of hell, no scheme of man Can ever pluck me from His hand 'Til He returns or calls me home Here in the pow'r of Christ I'll stand
