I Julian Grebe English 093 12/10/09 The Treasurer Hunt The United Students, the university’s student government, will appoint a treasurer instead of electing one [Appositive]. Three candidates, X, Y and Z, have been narrowed down from several applicants into the filling of this position [Absolute]. Their names and sex have been removed to prevent discrimination [Infinitive]. Once chosen the treasurer will have to work under pressure, have clear writing, be honest, and should have a capability of accounting. He or she must also have a good knowledge of math and must also be good in English and Speech. All three of the candidates, X, Y and Z, have similar math grades which are highly relevant because the treasure will have to maintain proper accounts; English is required because the treasurer has to submit a monthly and annual report to the president and legislature of the United Students. Candidate X had an average grade range of C+/B- in English, Speech and in all the other courses [Coordinator]. Which except for the general education ones were business courses. Z’s average grade was between C+ and B+ in English and Speech courses. Z has gotten straight A’s in Science
II courses and an average grade of C+ to B+ in Business. Y, however, excels above the others in English and speech, with an average grade of B+ in both of them, Y has not mentioned any of his or her other courses in his/her material. Although candidate Y could be the obvious choice, the fact that he or she has not mentioned anything about other courses makes, candidate Z the best option because he or she has fairly good grades in English, Speech and Business courses [Subordinator]. From the three candidates only X hasn’t done any extracurricular activities. That would mean X doesn’t have any experience of working under pressure [NS - That]. While Y was a cheerleader, and joined the Accounting Club and the Student Fellowship Congregation, which shows Y has some experience in accounting [Relative Clause]. Z has been part of the many student organizations but has not stayed long in any of them. Z was a member of the Management club, the Students for Participatory Democracy, the Cinema Guild, Accounting Club and the Student Fellowship Congregation this could mean Z is unreliable because he or she has not stayed long in any organization but it could also mean he or she has experience in all the fields he or she performed in each organization. So based on extracurricular activities candidate Y is the best option. In his or her autobiography X writes in an almost childish way about his or her strengths and how they will help X be a good treasurer, and X doesn’t write about any of his or her weaknesses. This further shows that X is not
III good at writing [Participle]. Y however, has a well written statement pointing out all of his or her strengths and how they will apply to the position of treasurer; but he or she also hasn’t written about his/her weaknesses [NS - Gerund]. Whilst Z has also written a good autobiography describing not only his or her strengths but also the weaknesses, which according to Z is not being more involved with other people [WH – Clause]. This autobiography show’s that she is honest and the fact that she is not involved with people will help his or her make decisions without having any personal reasons to do so[Prepositional]. So based on the written biographies candidate Z shows that he or she can be trusted and because Z is not involved with people it would be easier for him or her to make decisions, because students would then not be able to have any personnel effect on Z’s decisions on which organizations should get money [NS – Infinitive]. All the candidates seem to be able to fill the position of Treasurer without much difficulty. However in Candidate Y seems to be the more suitable person for the job because he or she has relatively good grades, has done some extracurricular activities and Y’s written autobiography is good. Candidate Z is probably the next best option for the position, because Z has good grades, has done some extracurricular activities, and has written a truthful autobiography. Even though candidate X has acceptable grades in his or her subjects, X has not done any extra curricular activities and has written a very childish autobiography. Making X the third most likely candidate.
