LETTER FAXED ON JUNE 4, 2009 Romulo Mabanta Buenaventura Sayoc & De Los Angeles 30/F Citibank Tower, 8741 Paseo de Roxas, Makati City Tel No. 848-0114 Fax No: 810-3110/815-3172 www.Romulo.com DEAR MANUEL L. QUEZON III: We write to you on behalf of our client, Fr. Romeo J. Intengan, SJ, who you have denounced time and again in your column in the Inquirer through innuendo and unfair inference. Most recently, however, you have moved outright disparagement. In the 18 May 2009 print issue of the Inquirer, you wrote an article titled “Moral intensification,” wherein you write of Father Intengan— Consider the dilemma of the Jesuits whose past election of Romeo Intengan as their leader has enabled him to use the residual prestige of his having been a past Jesuit Provincial to provide the moral and political underpinnings for the liquidation of the Legal Left. That prestige has accorded him a prominence he has deftly used, politically, and conferred impunity because he is immune from scrutiny. Two sides of the same coin: an Archbishop of Manila who can privately tell the President to resign but shrinks from publicly making the call; a former Jesuit Provincial who helps plot the assassination of suspected communists; both wield a power neither deserve or should even be able to wield. This article was also published on your website (Manuel L. Quezon III: The Daily Dose) and on the website of the Inquirer on even date. You accuse Father Intengan of complicity in criminal and immoral

activities and saying something which is against the teachings of the Catholic Church. This is utterly false. He has been condemning extrajudicial killings. Your very public and malicious accusations not only besmirch Father Intengan’s reputation, they have caused, and continue to cause, him mental anguish and serious anxiety. Accordingly, we demand that you issue a formal statement in your column recanting your libelous statements against Father Intengan. In addition, we ask that you remove the offending articles from your blog and, to the extent you are able, from the other sites that have chosen to publish the same. Moreover, we ask that you issue a formal apology to Father Intengan for the unfair, erroneous, and wholly-undeserved allegations you have made against him. We hope this receives your immediate attention and that we receive a favorable response from you on or before close of business on 11 June 2009. Should we not hear from you within that time, our client would be compelled to pursue his other legal and equitable remedies against you immediately and without further notice. —ROMULO MABANTA BUENAVENTURA SAYOC & DE LOS ANGELES Signed By: JACINTO D.
