Bali Largely Spared by 'Swine Flue' to Date, But More Cases Almost Certain to Occur in a Disease that May Prove More Manageable than Originally Thought. New Cases of suspected and confirmed H1N1 infections have become almost a daily occurrence in Bali, with more than 9 people all foreign visitors having been treated in the isolation ward of Bali's Sanglah General Hospital. Officially acknowledged as a worldwide epidemic and with neighboring Australia reporting more than 1 thousand cases, Bali is virtually certain to see more cases reported before the illness runs its global course. Free medical care to sufferers, disinfecting and health screening of arriving aircraft and their passengers, a large supply of Tamiflu to treat sufferers and the distribution of protective masks are among the preventative measures now put in place by Bali authorities determined to minimize the

spread of the disease. But, despite these measures, Bali's governor was quoted in NusaBali admitting that Bali's popularity as an international tourism destination makes it difficult to stop the disease from eventually spreading on the island. The provincial government of Bali has allocated approximately US$ 1 million from a special emergency fund to be used to combat the disease. This money is being used to pay for health surveillance teams, treating those suffering from the disease, purchasing Tamiflu and protective surgical masks. Visitors to Bali from infected countries are being asked to consider using free surgical masks during the first three days of their stay in Bali, after which, symptomfree visitors can be considered free of the H1N1 virus Www.balidiscovery.com

Just 7 km from Candidasa, is Tenganan, a Bali Aga Village (The original Bali). This pleasant, tranquil place is worth a visit and the people are welcoming and good natured. For decades visitors have been attracted to this “living museum”, many of them drawn by the geringsing (Double Ikat), cloth woven by the women of Tenganan. After you have paid a small donation, you enter this village which is 500 meter long and 250 meter wide and surrounded by natural walls with only through Tenganan is very interesting; you can see how the people live, some temples, and some typical local architecture. The inhabitants of this village live according to their ancient traditions and ceremonies. They continue to practice traditional arts like making baskets and lontar leaf books or calendars. In this village buffalos walk freely around and are ignored by the villagers. If you go to Tenganan, read about it beforehand or take local guide from the village. Would Somebody Please Listen to Governor Pastika? Bali's Governor Writes Bold Open Letter Detailing the Many Shortcomings of Bali's Ngurah Rai Airport. To some degree echoing an article that appeared on Balidiscovery.com in May 2009 [Pak Legowo: Please Listen to the Governor ], Bali's governor Made Mangku Pastika has written an unusual and very public report on the abysmal conditions prevailing at Bali's Ngurah Rai International Airport. The open letter, dated June 22, 2009, is addressed to the Minister of Transportation, the Minister of Culture and Tourism, the Minister for State-Owned Enterprises, the Director General of Immigration and the Director General of Customs and Excise with copies forwarded to The President of Indonesia, the Chairman of the Bali Tourism Board, and the General Manager of the Airport's Management Authority Angkasa Pura. Beginning his letter by citing numerous complaints from tourists, tourism industry stakeholders and the general public, the governor says that despite a number of coordination meetings with the Bali airport authority in the past, those meetings have failed to yield any improvements in how Bali's main gateway is operated. The letter, sent with a video illustrating his written complaints, listed the following shortcomings at Bali's only international airport: The presence of "too many" porters at the airport who commandeer baggage trolleys, giving the impression that tourists are somehow obliged to use their services and creating complaints later when tips are demanded. According to Pastika, the need for porters at the airport is questionable, given the lack of porters at many international airports and the fact that in Bali the porter's presence serves to make

an already crowded airport even more crowded. There are only four Visa on Arrival counters to serve the airport at peak operational hours, resulting in long waiting lines. The airport has 24 immigration counters, a number actually sufficient to support tourist arrivals, but, in fact, failing to do the job as only a portion of the counters are ever staffed. Once aga in, the res ult: lon

g lines and many complaints from tourist visitors. Airport Officials engage in predatory behavior, approaching tourists standing in lines offering "express service" through immigration in return for a fee. The presence of many brochure racks offering package tours and transportation services at low fees that make "no sense." The services offered in these brochures cause losses to Bali's official tour and travel operators, who provide a guaranteed level of service and realistic pricing. Despite numerous past complaints to the airport about these brochures and promises by Angkasa Pura that remedial steps would be taken, the brochures continue to be on display at the airport. According to Pastika, a further investigation by his office also reveals that brochure distribution, counters and advertising at the airport are all

controlled by a third party appointed by Angkasa Pura. Tourist Information Counters at the airport which are supposed to distribute brochures and provide information to incoming tourists are, in fact, selling cut-rate tours that anger legal tour operators. There are too many money changers within the airport. In the arrival area, there are 12 money changers all gathered together in a single line of booths near the exit corridor lane of the airport's arrival section. According to the governor, 5 money changers would be a more ideal number and that number should be located outside the arrival hall. The accumulation of security staff in certain areas of the airport give the impression that they are "working while socializing with each other." The over abundance of commercial space rented out at the airport. As a result, the domestic arrival area is very cramped with no chairs, causing disorder outside the arrival hall where people have no place to sit while waiting for arriving passengers. The presence of "special rooms" used by Customs and Immigration to "sort out problems" which, according to the governor, is against the rules of Customs and Immigration. The unusual move by Governor Pastika of writing an open report on the many problems at Bali's airport brings into sharp focus the anger and frustration felt by Bali's tourism industry and the general public with the poor condition and inferior service provided to the public at Bali's airport. It also underlines what appears to be a growing rift between the Governor and the Airport's Manager, Heru Legowo. Www.balidiscovery.com

PARAMEDICS trying to get to injured and sick people in crowded city streets are being abused and attacked by ignorant passers-by. The attacks - which paramedics said were occurring on a daily basis - have even included coffee being thrown in their faces. In the latest case of abuse, paramedics on motorbikes were confronted by hostile crowds on their way to save lives. The rapid response units operate in the CBD and must use pedestrian malls such as Sydney's Martin Place when the city roads are gridlocked. But pedestrians are throwing coffee, food and refusing to move out of the way as the emergency workers race to life threatening jobs. Paramedic Scott Webster told The Daily Telegraph violent reactions were increasingly getting worse. "I don't know what it is about society but they just don't respect emergency services," he said. "People refuse to get out of our way. A colleague even had some coffee thrown at him. "Others keep talking on their mobile phones or tell us to get off the footpath." Rapid response bikes are only used for life-threatening cases and also slash response times. They are ideal for the clogged roads especially in peak hour. "We go to life-threatening jobs like shootings, stabbings and heart attacks," Mr Webster said. "Just one minute could mean the difference between life and death. We want people to realise that we could be going to someone's dying baby." Just like cars, pedestrians should move to the left when they see or hear an ambulance. The BMW R1200 bikes have been in use in the city for the past 10 years. They are responsible for slashing response times from eight minutes to threeand-a-half minutes. As Sydney traffic becomes worse, motorcycles are crucial in reaching patients faster. "It's usually the people who abuse us and are in our way who are the ones to complain when we take too long to get to a job," he said.

Garuda to resume flights to Europe in 2010 after EU lifts flight ban Garuda Indonesia is expected to resume flights to Europe in the first half of 2010, after the EU Air Safety Committee recommends the lifting of the flight ban on Garuda and three other Indonesian carriers. Garuda spokesman Pujobroto said Garuda would first fly to Amsterdam and when the situation allows, fly also to Frankfurt. "We would fly to Amsterdam as the first choice because the market there is quite large," Pujobroto said to Antara News.

Garuda will use its 330-200 aircraft to fly to Europe and has ordered 10 Boeing 777 planes for the direct trip. Transportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal said that the European Commission should allow Garuda, Mandala Airlines, Airfast Indonesia and Prime Air to fly in EU airspace within 20 days. In July 2007, the European Commission imposed a flight ban on all Indonesian carriers, forbidding them from entering the region, following a series of fatal accidents.

On New Year's Day 2007, an Adam Air flight plunged into the sea killing all 102 people onboard. On March 7 the same year 22 people died when a Garuda jet shot off a runway and burst into flames. Comprehensive efforts have since been made to remedy the safety shortcomings in order to meet the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards. The flight ban will still remain in place for 53 other Indonesian airlines.

Jackie Ellery finds cat by watching BBC talk show A WOMAN has been reunited with her missing cat after watching it wandering around the set of a live political talk show. British woman Jackie Ellery was sitting at home last Thursday night when a friend called and told her to watch a BBC program, the Daily Mail reports. Mrs Ellery was then shocked to see ginger tom Tango wandering

around the set of talk show Question Time, which was filming at a school in her hometown of Cornwall. Tango soon stole the spotlight from the politicians and pundits on the panel, before a stage manager darted across the set and collected Ms Ellery's pet who has since become a minor celebrity in Cornwall.

"It's lovely," Mrs Ellery said. "He's a mischievous cat anyway and because we live so close to the school he's often in the school grounds. "I've even been asked for his paw-tograph." Tango and Mrs Ellery were reunited later that night.

Study finds beer not linked to beer belly BEER-LOVERS can drink as much as they like without having to fear developing a beer-belly, according to new research. The UK's Daily Mail broke the welcome news to British beerlovers yesterday, claiming that scientists have proven a beer-belly is purely the result of genetics. An eight-year study of more than 20,000 beer drinkers - 7876 men and 12,749 women - found that while heavy drinkers will put on weight, it won't necessarily be around the beer belly region. The heaviest drinkers those who drank more than a litre a day - put on the most weight.

But when the researchers then measured hip-towaist ratios to establish which drinkers developed a pot belly, the results were randomly spread across all drinking groups.

Mass escape from Chimp Island closes Chester Zoo

A full service web design house providing web development solution for companies or individuals interested in outsourcing their web design and website development needs

AN English zoo has been evacuated after about 30 chimpanzees escaped from their enclosure. The animals escaped from "Chimp Island" and found their way into a keeper area where their food is prepared, the zoo said. More than 5000 visitors were asked to leave Chester Zoo, near

Liverpool, shortly after the breakout as keepers rounded up the chimps. "In the interests of public safety Chester Zoo was evacuated today, Sunday 5th July, as a precautionary measure," a zoo statement said. "This decision was taken due to an escape of chimpanzees from Chimp Island into a keeper area." It apologised for the

disappointment caused to guests and offered to provide a refund or free future visit to the zoo. The zoo has more than 7000 animals. According to its website, it is visited by more than 1.3 million people each year and has been named by Forbes magazine as one of the best 15 zoos in the world.

Younger woman's care key to longer life IT'S said that behind every great man is a great woman and now research has found that the secret to a long life is having a loving woman care for you. While the average life expectancy of a man is 77, the last seven years are, for the majority of men, marked by serious illness or ailments. But according to experts,

middle-aged men whose partners stayed home caring for the family were less depressed than those with wives working full-time. Men who had partners go from caring for the family into a fulltime job were more depressed still, with researchers claiming stay-athome women were beneficial to men's mental health because they did the hard yards organising family

and social lives. Germany's Max Plank Institute -- which conducted a study into deaths in Denmark between 1990 and 2005 -- found a younger bride can cut the risk of premature death risk by 20 per cent.

Virgins wanted for the casting couch A MELBOURNE filmmaker is searching for virgins to prostitute themselves as part of a new documentary - and he will hold auditions in Adelaide. Justin Sisely has caused outrage in Sydney and Melbourne for putting up "virgins wanted" posters to recruit for his film. He is looking for two virgins - one male, one female - for the self-funded documentary that will follow the two as they auction their virginity to unknown bidders. Mr Sisely said the two "successful" bidders would receive $20,000, along with 90 per cent of the final auction sale. The remaining 10 per cent would be retained by the prostitution agency which he will have to find to carry out the auction. Mr Sisely said he planned to visit Adelaide last, after Brisbane and Perth, and will be here by November, despite criticism and death threats. "There's been a lot of

30

negativity, a lot of different sorts of opinions - 'Is this prostitution? Am I exploiting people?'," he said. "In the film, I'm trying to show a different side of what normally constitutes prostitution; (these people) are not constantly making money from selling their body. "I want to show different values on virginity." Australian Family Association SA spokesman Jerome Appleby said he was appalled by the idea, describing the film as "sleazy". "It's a sad indictment on society that sex is becoming so commercialised - it's pretty sleazy, really," he said. "I think of particular concern is that they are becoming sworn to secrecy and can't even tell their parents. "Obviously parents have their child's best interests at heart, so it's not surprising he (Sisely) doesn't want them to speak to them." Mr Sisely, who has previously made a feature film and a surfing documentary, said he saw nothing

wrong in the film and would even be happy for his sister to take part. "It's their choice; if that's what they want to do, I'd rather they have a memorable experience than a drunken one behind a tree," he said. "I wouldn't ask someone to do something that I wouldn't do. I wish I had but it's a bit late for me." Mr Sisely said auditions in Adelaide would be held in an "iconic location". "I'm looking for someone who has the courage to go through with it," he said. "Someone who has got a personality, and strong family and friends." Mr Sisely claimed he had already recruited an 18-year-old girl and a 22year-old man for the film, both from Sydney, but was planning to press ahead with other auditions anyway. The two have been sworn to secrecy and cannot tell their parents.

By the end of the series, five Australia batsmen averaged over 50 (Michael Hussey, Ponting, Michael Clarke, Andrew Symonds and Matthew Hayden), compared with England's one (Kevin Pietersen). The result left England with the shortest tenure of Ashes possession in history, holding the precious urn for just 15 months. As a result of the events in Australia, the England and Wales Cricket Board initiated a "comprehensive review" of what went wrong in Australia. No doubt Aussie fans are hoping another flogging and comprehensive review are just around the corner.

Eight games, another bunch of highlights, lowlights, winners, grinners, sinners and moments to remember. Here's our take on the pulsating weekend that was round 14 in the AFL. The Brownlow Banker: Matthew Boyd is a very, very good footballer. This isn't a revelation by any stretch, but it seems the hardworking Western Bulldogs midfielder doesn't get the kudos reserved for his teammates. On Saturday night, albeit against Hawthorn, he was at his down and dirty best in the clinches. Boyd had 35 disposals, eight clearances, seven inside 50s, two tackles and a couple of goals. That's elite and worthy of the umpire's highest praise. The Golden Moment: The hype was incredible, but the heavyweight battle between St Kilda and Geelong lived up to the prematch billing. It was played before a record crowd at Etihad Stadium and not one person had left when onetime bad boy Michael Gardiner soared above a huge pack to bring down a towering mark deep in the final term. With scores tied, Gardiner went back and kicked the winning goal, his fourth of the afternoon. File this in modern-day classics. Meanwhile, at the MCG a day prior, Melbourne Demons pulled off a win for ailing president Jim Stynes. Didn't See That Coming: Laconic, mild-mannered, one cool cat. Brisbane Lions high-flyer Jared Brennan isn't renowned for his feisty temper on the footy field. Every man has his breaking point, however, and Port Adelaide antagoniser Josh Carr sent Brennan over his. The pesky Port tagger was on the receiving end of a powerful headbutt from the inform Lion at AAMI Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The powerful blow drew blood, was captured by the field umpire and Fox Sports cameras, and will likely cost Brennan a month on the sidelines. The Biggest Flop: The blockbuster weekend started way back on Friday night. Remember, when Essendon were supposed to take it up to Collingwood in front of

80,000 fans at the home of football? Well, in wintry conditions, the fans held up their end of the bargain, packing into the stadium. But after quarter-time the Dons didn't. Collingwood piled on seven goals to one in the second term and it was game over at the long break. The Bombers now face a season-defining trip to face Sydney Swans at the SCG. Watch This Space: There are many out there willing to declare the premiership chase a race in two. Granted, St Kilda and Geelong are the clubhouse leaders after round 14. But there is a side from Melbourne's western suburbs you write off at your peril. Rodney Eade has his Western Bulldogs playing their bold, relentless game somewhere near their peak. They underlined their premiership credentials with an 88-point win over Hawthorn on Saturday night, and a while back were only a Brad Johnson set shot away from bringing down the Cats. Spray Of The Week: With coaches keeping their tempers in check for most of the round (bar Alastair Clarkson getting a little shirty post-match), we had to turn to the Fox Sports commentary box for this weekend's biggest sledge. Danny Frawley and Liam Pickering were overseeing the Swans tackle North Melbourne at the SCG when the home team began to seize the momentum in the third term. First, Rhyce Shaw and then young gun Patrick Veszpremi kicked goals and went on to celebrate with great oomph. Pickering and Frawley thought it a bit too much and let their feelings be known. Careful in the Harbour City if you enjoy yourself when the pair returns. Wouldn't Want To Be You: Betting on football is fraught with danger. But betting on Collingwood stopper Simon Prestigiacomo to win the Brownlow Medal this season is something else. That's right, a punter out there has backed 'Presti' to win the game's highest individual honour. Never before has $20 been worse spent. The dour Magpie has been wonderful all year and would not be

out of place in the All Australian side for 2009. But the Brownlow? Try Alan Didak or Dane Swan if you're that one-eyed. The Last Laugh: Josh Fraser allegedly "dogged it" when Collingwood last tackled Essendon. Grant Thomas, the former St Kilda coach and media hitman, highlighted a weak Fraser effort in the opening exchanges of the Anzac Day clash and let the maligned ruckman have it. In the return bout on Friday night, Fraser was the dominant player on the ground. He dominated Paddy Ryder and kicked two crucial goals. He'll suggest there was no extra motivation this time around but Fraser, a former No.1 draft pick, played like there was. What's His Name Again He Had A Belter: Not many kids get to play for the AFL club they grew up supporting. Even fewer barrack for the Demons. But the struggling wooden spooners have found a life-long fan and cool-headed footballer in Jack Grimes. Grimes, who ended up at Melbourne for the first-round pick they received from Brisbane Lions for Travis Johnstone, announced himself as a future leader with a starring role in the win over West Coast. He gathered 29 sure possessions and was widely adjudged best on ground. Perhaps there're two Jacks worth keeping an eye on down there. What You Won't See This Week: Mark McVeigh and Dean Solomon out late on the squirt together. McVeigh, 28, was rubbed out by his teammates for drinking fizz with his old mate Solomon. A couple of days later, Solomon was rubbed out by the Dockers for the same incident. McVeigh missed a training, Solomon didn't. Both didn't play and their respective side's lost. At their age, you hope it's a case of lesson learnt. Again.

Foundation study designated Vanuatu the world's happiest nation, with Costa Rica at second place. Sociologist Andrea Fonseca said Costa Rica gives its citizens the "tools" to be happy, but cautioned that happiness cannot be calculated just by looking at life expectancy and environmental practices. She added that the country's rise to the top of the Happy Planet Index "has a lot to do with social imagination". Costa Rica has a peaceful reputation because it does not have an army, and is also known for its protected ecological zones and national slogan "pure life", she said. Critics of the study, which is taking seriously by some governments, say it ignores issues like political country's residents say they are happy and satisfied with their lives. freedom, human rights and labor Those figures, taken along with the rights. fact that Costa Rica has a small "ecological footprint", combined to push the small nation to the top of the list.

COSTA Rica is the happiest place on Earth, and one of the most environmentally friendly, according to a new survey by a British nongovernmental group. The New Economics Foundation looked at 143 countries that are home to 99 per cent of the world's population and devised an equation that weighs life expectancy and people's happiness against their environmental impact. By that formula, Costa Rica is the happiest, greenest country in the world, just ahead of the Dominican Republic. Latin American countries did well in the survey, occupying nine of the top 10 spots. Many major Western nations did poorly, with Britain coming in at 74th place, Australia at 102nd and the US at 114th. The New Economics Foundation's measurements found Costa Ricans have a life expectancy of 78.5 years, and 85 per cent of the

Outside the Bristol Zoo, in England , there is a parking lot for 150 cars and 8 coaches, or buses. It was manned by a very pleasant attendant with a ticket machine charging cars £1 (about $1.40) and coaches £5 (about $7). This parking attendant worked there solid for all of 25 years. Then, one day, he just didn't turn up for work. "Oh well", said Bristol Zoo Management - "we'd better phone up the City Council and get them to send a new

parking attendant . . . " "Err . . . no", said the Council, "that parking lot is your responsibility." "Err . . . no", said Bristol Zoo Management, "the attendant was employed by the City Council, wasn't he?" "Err .. . . no!" insisted the Council. Sitting in his villa somewhere on the coast of Spain (presumably), is a man who had been taking the parking lot fees, estimated at £400 (about $560) per

While most 18-year-olds would balk at the thought of their parents naked, Auckland student Michael appeared comfortable with the concept, twice listing nude and semi-clothed images of his 44-yearold mother Jennifer. The first time he auctioned "five naked photos of my mum'' to annoy her after the pair had an argument, he told the Herald on Sunday newspaper. When TradeMe removed the listing the following day he relisted a second series of "glamour photos'' with her permission. This time there was more clothing but one was an underwear shot. Michael, who did not want his full name used, said he did it for the extra cash. "We're not rich or anything,'' he said. Jennifer said she was "pretty annoyed'' by the first listing, calling her son a "cheeky little git'', but liked the second lot because they were "quite artistic''. here's nothing dodgy about them. They were taken by a family

friend about eight years ago,'' Jennifer told the newspaper. "I wanted 50 per cent of the sale but more than that, I miss the nice comments.'' The photos were viewed 11,000 times before they were

pulled by the website's management, citing "inappropriateness''. "We don't really want to be the place where people list photos of their mums in their underwear,'' TradeMe spokesman Jon Macdonald said. Jackie Ellery finds cat by watching BBC talk show A WOMAN has been reunited with her missing cat after watching it wandering around the set of a live political talk show. British woman Jackie Ellery was sitting at home last

Thursday night when a friend called and told her to watch a BBC program, the Daily Mail reports. Mrs Ellery was then shocked to see ginger tom Tango wandering around the set of talk show Question Time, which was filming at a school in her hometown of Cornwall. Tango soon stole the spotlight from the politicians and pundits on the panel, before a stage manager darted across the set and collected Ms Ellery's pet - who has since become a minor celebrity in Cornwall. "It's lovely," Mrs Ellery said. "He's a mischievous cat anyway and because we live so close to the school he's often in the school grounds. "I've even been asked for his paw-tograph." Tango and Mrs Ellery were reunited later that night.

Cannibal Europeans 'ate their children' THE remains of the "first Europeans" discovered at an archaeological site in northern Spain have revealed that these prehistoric humans were cannibals who particularly liked the flesh of children. "We know that they practiced cannibalism," Jose Maria Bermudez de Castro, one of the co-directors of the Atapuerca project, said. A study of the remains revealed that they turned to cannibalism to feed themselves and not as part of a ritual. They also ate their rivals after killing them, mostly children and adolescents. "It is the first welldocumented case of cannibalism in the history of humanity, which does not mean that it is the oldest," Mr de Castro said. The remains discovered in the caves "appeared scattered, broken, fragmented, mixed with

other animals such as horses, deer, rhinoceroses, all kinds of animals caught in hunting" and eaten by humans, he said. "This gives us an idea of cannibalism as a type of gastronomy and not as a ritual." The Atapuerca caves were first discovered in the late 19th Century when a tunnel was blasted through the mountain for a railway line. The first excavations did not take place until 1978. Then in 1984, the team found 150 human remains. In 1992 they found a complete, intact skeleton and two years later they discovered remains dating back more than 800,000 years. Those remains probably correspond to the first humans who reached Europe, known as Homo antecessor, after the Latin word for pioneer or explorer. Homo antecessor, who

lived before Neanderthals and Homo Sapiens, probably came to the caves of Atapuerca after a long migration from Africa and through the Middle East, northern Italy and France. The area at the time was heavily forested, with oaks, chestnut trees and junipers and abundant with bears, lynxes, panthers, foxes and hyenas. They found water and food in abundance, could hunt wild boar, horses, deer, which means that they did not practice cannibalism through a lack of food. Cannibalised remains were discovered on two levels, which showed it was not a one-off thing but continued through time. "Another interesting aspect is that most of the 11 individuals that we have identified were children or adolescents," a spokesman for the team said.

Burglar caught snoozing on the job A Thai thief broke into a house but promptly fell asleep inside before stealing anything and was eventually discovered by a housemaid, police said. Prachak Jarkngooloem, 24, was found at a house in the coastal resort of Pattaya, 150 kilometres south of Bangkok, where he admitted planning to steal goods from the property. "He told police that he entered the house yesterday evening

hoping to steal something but he was tired and sleepy because he argued with his girlfriend the previous night and went for a drink with friends, so he slept," Lieutenant Colonel Ruengwit Rakchart of Pattaya police said. "He did not get anything because the maid found him and informed the police." He said police were forced to break into the home when Prachak locked himself in after realising he had been caught by the maid and tried to

buy time to escape. Lieutenant Colonel Ruengwit said the burglar would be charged with trespassing at night and attempting to steal goods, offences which carry a prison term of five years.

'Free house' TradeMe auction raise $240,000 A NEW Zealand couple who sold a queen-size bed, with a house thrown in, are looking forward to their new freedom. Wayne Saggers and Kathy Wahrlich, of Westport, on South Island's west coast, sold their bed - with a six-bedroom historic house - in an online auction for $NZ302,600 ($240,290).

12

The reserve had been $NZ1. The couple watched at home with friends. Mr Saggers said he stayed "pretty relaxed" as bids crept up, and they were happy with the final result. He said they were excited about being free of a mortgage, rates and bills. The couple ran the old

Stone House for more than three years as a bed-and-breakfast. It had a quotable value of $NZ300,000.

Suicide Warnings for 2 Anti-Smoking Drugs WASHINGTON Federal drug regulators warned Wednesday that patients taking two popular drugs to stop smoking should be watched closely for signs of serious mental illness, as reports mount of suicides among the drugs' users. But officials emphasized that fear should not stop patients from taking the smoking-cessation medicines, Chantix, made by Pfizer, and Zyban, made by GlaxoSmithKline, which also sells it under the brand name Wellbutrin, for depression. “Stopping smoking is a goal we should all be working towards,” said Dr. Curtis J. Rosebraugh, director of a drug evaluation office at the Food and Drug Administration. “We don't want to scare people off from trying a medication that could help them achieve this goal. You should just be careful.” Pfizer will add a so-called black box warning the F.D.A.'s most serious caution to the packaging information for Chantix. The Pfizer drug, introduced in 2006, has about 90 percent of the market for prescription smoking-cessation drugs, according to IMS Health, a health care information company. Even so, Chantix sales $846 million in 2008 had been less than Pfizer had hoped because of previous warnings of its side effects. Glaxo will expand its existing black box warning on Wellbutrin, citing suicidal thoughts by patients who use it for depression, to include Zyban, which has had only modest sales in the smoking cessation market. Both companies will also be required to conduct clinical trials to assess the mental health risks associated with the drugs' uses. Pfizer is already enrolling schizophrenia patients in a trial.

Because smokers and people trying to quit are statistically more likely to be depressed and suicidal, officials for both companies said it was difficult to identify the specific impact of the drugs on those risks. “Nicotine withdrawal itself can be very difficult for people to endure,” Dr. Steve Romano, a Pfizer vice president, said Wednesday. Analysts said the F.D.A. action would have little effect on sales because of previous indications of the drugs' psychiatric risks. “I think the market and physicians have already been sensitized to this,” said Catherine J. Arnold, an analyst for Credit Suisse. “I'm not panicking,” said Jami Rubin, an analyst for Goldman Sachs, “Sales are already down a lot. It is and will remain a small niche product.” Chantix had already experienced a slight sales decline last year from the $883 million achieved in 2007. And this year's first-quarter sales of $177 million were 36 percent below the corresponding period last year. Ms. Arnold predicted that sales would probably continue falling to around $740 million for all of 2009, but that demand for smoking-cessation treatments would enable it to grow modestly after that to perhaps half of the $2 billion in annual sales Pfizer had originally hoped for the drug. European officials first alerted the F.D.A. in 2007 to problems associated with Chantix. In September of that year, Jeffrey Carter Albrecht, a keyboard player from the popmusic group Edie Brickell and New Bohemians, was killed by a

neighbor who had complained that Mr. Albrecht was banging on his door, ranting. Mr. Albrecht's girlfriend blamed Chantix, which she said had made him hostile. The widely publicized event led to a cascade of similar reports and scrutiny by F.D.A. safety officials, who have now received 98 reports of suicides and 188 reports of suicide attempts among those taking Chantix. As officials looked more closely, they found to their surprise that Zyban has similar associated risks. The agency received 14 reports of suicides and 17 reports of suicide attempts among those taking Zyban. No one knows why the drugs are associated with mental problems. In some cases, patients could be experiencing nicotine withdrawal, but some of the reports involved patients who had yet to stop smoking. And many of the events happened just as patients began or stopped therapy, officials said. “If this is nicotine withdrawal, it really doesn't matter,” said Dr. Robert Temple, an F.D.A. official. “You need to pay attention to them.” The agency's action requires the drugs' makers to mention the risk of suicide in advertising, and it prevents the companies from using “reminder” ads, during which consumers are encouraged to talk to their doctors about a health issue but the product's name is not mentioned.

Dani Pedrosa wins US MotoGP ahead of Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo The US MotoGP turned into a one-man show at Laguna Seca in California, and the star was an unlikely winner - Spaniard Dani Pedrosa Pedrosa led from first lap to last on his Honda for his first MotoGP victory of the year, holding off Italian Valentino Rossi on a dramatic final lap. Pedrosa's winning time was 44min 1.58secs for 32 laps on the 3.61-kilometre track. Rossi, who increased his margin atop the championship standings, was second on his Yamaha, 0.344 seconds behind Pedrosa. Pole starter Jorge Lorenzo from Spain was third on a Yamaha despite painful shoulder and foot injuries suffered in a qualifying crash that nearly knocked him out of the race. Pedrosa, who now has seven career grand prix wins, had failed to finish two of the previous three races and finished sixth in the other - and has struggled all year with a series of injuries. "It's been a long, tough year for me. I'm happy to be back

and win a race," Pedrosa said. Pedrosa jumped into the lead on the first lap despite starting fourth on the grid and gradually built his lead to three seconds halfway through the race. He maintained that lead until the final lap, when Rossi nearly overtook him on the final turn. "Perhaps the only mistake was on the last lap when I was too slow," Pedrosa said. "I thought I had more of an advantage." Rossi, who earned his 100th career win last weekend at the Dutch MotoGP, was seeking his third straight victory. "I didn't expect Dani to be so strong today," Rossi said. "I was pushing a lot on the final lap and I saw Dani slow down. I got close, but not close enough." Australian Casey Stoner was fourth on a Ducati and his teammate, American Nicky Hayden, was fifth. It was the first MotoGp race this season not won by Rossi, Lorenzo or Stoner, who have dominated the class all year. Lorenzo, who appeared to struggle in the morning warm-up and gingerly got off his bike after 13 laps in that morning session, said he had

trouble sleeping the night before because of pain. He briefly caught Rossi for second place with four laps to go, but wobbled while making the pass and fell back to third for good. "I did very close to my best," he said. "I did one of the best races of my career. My physical condition was very poor." The second-place finish allowed Rossi to increase his lead atop the championship standings as he seeks a ninth world title and seventh in MotoGP. Rossi now has 151 points, followed by Lorenzo on 142, Stoner on 135 and Pedrosa on 92. Rossi matched a record with his 158th consecutive grand prix start. Rossi, who has never missed a GP race since moving up to that class in 2000, equalled the record set by Alex Barros in 1992-2003. The 250cc and 125cc categories had the weekend off. The withdrawal of Yuki Takahashi from motorcycling's premier class this past week made the Laguna Seca race the first MotoGP without a Japanese rider since 1991.

England captain Andrew Strauss reveals plans to sink Phil Hughes's nemesis Steve Harmison has missed the cut for England's 13-man squad for the first Ashes Test, but England captain Andrew Strauss is still confident the locals have the measure of Australia's diminutive batsman. A secret diary kept by Strauss has exposed chinks in the homespun batting technique of the rookie opener. It was Harmison who so decisively revealed those weaknesses playing for England Lions in a tour match when he twice dismissed the 20-year-old with sharp, rising deliveries aimed at the batsman's throat. While batting with Hughes at English side Middlesex, Strauss ordered that an Ashes blueprint be prepared on how to dismiss the young Australian. Strauss asked Middlesex captain Shaun Udal to write a diary of everything he noticed about Hughes's unorthodox technique and it may have reaped the ultimate Ashes dividend. Hughes plundered three county centuries against seconddivision attacks. However, it may all have been part of England's Ashes plan. Strauss and Udal soon saw that the left-hander was often uncomfortable against the short ball. "It's a double-edged sword,"

Strauss said. "They get the opportunity to play over here and experience these conditions, but we get the opportunity to have a look at them and how they play in these conditions." England batsman Paul Collingwood believes Hughes's sixweek spell playing county cricket could backfire in the Ashes. "It allowed us to see him up close, especially Andrew Strauss, who has been playing alongside him at county level and has had a good look at him," he said. Australia coach Tim Nielsen has dared England to try to bounce Hughes out - insisting South Africa's quicks tried the same tactic without success this year. After he failed in the opening innings of his Test debut in Johannesburg, Hughes responded with two centuries in the three-Test series. Nielsen believes Hughes will be well prepared for England's shortpitched plans after he confronted a fired-up Harmison in the game at Worcester. "It's great experience for Hughesy because he hasn't faced that quality fast bowling in the last month or so ... it's given him a chance to be aware of how they are going to attack him," Nielsen said. "Without wanting to make too much of that, that's how South Africa bowled to him all series when he had

great success. "Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel and Makhaya Ntini all went hard at him. "You have to be pretty precise if you bowl that length because you can see how hard he hits the ball through point if it's not quite right. "It's physically taxing on the bowler, smashing the ball into the wicket the whole time, so to do it for long periods of time is hard work." In the lead-up to Wednesday's first Ashes Test in Cardiff, Hughes will do extra work against the short ball in the nets. "Hughesy got out a similar way in both innings so he has got some work to do there," captain Ricky Ponting said. "He will go away and work on that." However well Hughes prepares in the coming days, he is sure to sleep more soundly knowing Harmison won't be there at Cardiff. England has instead plumped for Graham Onions as an extra fast bowler in its squad. Onions played in England's series against West Indies but was nothing like the menace that Harmison was against Australia in the tour game. Struggling spinner Monty Panesar has made the first Test squad and England has the option of playing two spinners with Graeme Swann as the frontline tweaker.

Ashes countdown No.2: number of 5-0 whitewashes completed by Australia We continue our 30-day countdown to the first Ashes Test with Australia's two 5-0 whitewashes, which were completed 86 years apart. England may have secured Ashes sweeps in bygone days, but they were achieved only in series of up to three Tests - and more than 120 years ago. The Poms were certainly the dominant force in those early days of Test cricket, and the series of 1886 and 1886-1887 highlighted that fact. But five-game sweeps are exclusively the domain of Australia. When Ricky Ponting and his revenge-hungry side swept the 2006-2007 series, they became the

16

second Australia side to complete a whitewash. The first was delivered 86 years earlier, in the 1920-1921 series the first after the outbreak of World War I - under the guidance of 41-year-old Warwick Armstrong. Armstrong's men made their intentions clear from the start, setting the visitors 659 to win in the first Test in Sydney, before winning by 377 runs. They won the next Test in Melbourne by an innings and 91 runs before scoring a comprehensive 119run victory in Adelaide. The 'Big Ship' (as Armstrong was known because of his daunting size) and his side had reclaimed the Ashes in just 15 days of cricket. But there was even better to come.

The wins in final two Tests were the most dominant of the series - by eight wickets in Melbourne followed by a nine-wicket triumph in Sydney. “Never before in history had one side shown such an overwhelmingly superiority,” cricket bible Wisden said of the tour. Like the team of 1920-1921, the Ashes returned to Australia within 15 days in 2006-2007 following a 277-run win at the Gabba, a six-wicket victory at Adelaide Oval and a 206-run win at the WACA Ground in Perth.

e r k C Jo e o n r A Priest's Dying Wish In Canberra an old priest lay dying in the hospital. For years he had faithfully served the people of the nation's capital. He motioned for his nurse to come near. "Yes, Father?" Said the nurse. "I would really like to see Prime Minister and the Treasurer before I die", whispered the priest. "I'll see what I can do, Father", replied the nurse. The nurse sent the request to Parliament and waited for a response. Soon the word arrived; Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and Treasurer Wayne Swan would be delighted to visit the priest. As they went to the hospital, Kevin commented to Wayne, "I don't know why the old priest wants to see us, but it will certainly will help our images and might even get me re-elected Prime Minister. After all, I'm IN IT TO WIN IT". Wayne agreed that it was a good thing. When they arrived at the priest's room, the priest took Kevins hand in his right hand and Waynes hand in his left. There was silence and a look of serenity on the old priest's face. Finally Kevin Rudd spoke. "Father, of all the people you could have chosen, why did you choose us to be with you as you near the end?" The old priest slowly replied, "I have always tried to pattern my life after our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ." "Amen", said Kevin. "Amen", said Wayne. The old priest continued, "Jesus died between two lying thieves; I would like to do the same."

Unbeaten Saints can still improve: Riewoldt St Kilda forward Nick Riewoldt says his side can still improve despite stretching its unbeaten run to 14 AFL games with victory over Geelong on Sunday. The Saints travel to Perth this weekend to play the struggling West Coast at Subiaco. St Kilda is on track to concede the fewest points in a season since the AFL became a 22team competition in 1970. But Riewoldt says the team has plenty to work on during the rest of the season. "I don't think either side played the perfect game by any

stretch, so there's still a lot of improvement in both sides," he said. "Both sides were missing some key players, particularly Geelong with [Steve] Johnson pulling out late and [Brad] Ottens to come back in. "It does give us a bit of confidence, but it was four points up for grabs and that's it." Riewoldt also paid tribute to his St Kilda team mate Michael Gardiner, after the ruckman's matchwinning performance against Geelong yesterday. Gardiner kicked four goals against the Cats, including the

winning effort during the final seconds of the game. The 30-year-old had played just a handful of games in two years for the Saints prior to this season, but he has been of the team's key players in 2009. Riewoldt says Gardiner is playing some of the best football of his career. "He's gone through a pretty rough journey with his body and a few other things, but ever since he walked through the door at the club he's been really committed and I think people probably forget what a great player he was back in 2003 through to 2005," he said. "He's starting to recapture some of that form now which is terrific for us.”

How good was that match? As St Kilda's battered yet euphoric players lay scattered in the winner's dressing-room post match, one constant refrain echoed around the vast chamber. It started from the players, and swept from the officials to the coaches. How good was that? Not the stunning win, but the game itself: a rare match that lived up to every conceivable bit of hype that had been piled onto the contest. St Kilda's rampaging first term. Geelong's inevitable comeback. Lenny Hayes' glorious last quarter. The individual performances of Paul Chapman, Sam Gilbert, Justin Koschitzke, Joel Selwood and Jimmy Bartel. Cam Mooney's sensational second half after nervously dishing off an early opportunity that smacked of panic. Nick Riewoldt's power running and nerveless finishing. Max Rooke's wrecking-ball cameo up forward. That wonderful moment late where Bartel collided with a teammate as he marked, yet grimly hung on to the Sherrin with all his life as he smashed into the turf. And then there was Michael Gardiner's own Leo Barry moment, as incredible an individual highlight as we are likely to see in a homeand-away game. Gardiner himself had only six disposals and two behinds in that
