Community Members Complain of No Enforcement Against Those Who Ignore Business Operating Rules in KutaLegian-Seminyak Corridor. The lack of rules, or at least the lack of enforcement of the rules that do exists governing restaurants, bars and entertainment venues in the Kuta-LegianSeminyak corridor, is a growing source of community unrest - adding further to that area's notorious reputation as the lawless corner of the island of Bali. The impotence of enforcement officials in enforcing the law is underlined by the continuing operations of two bars located on Jalan Benesari in Kuta: Kups Corner Bar and Restaurant and Bar Bother Palace. Despite complaints by local residents of excessive noise, surprise inspections confirming decibel levels exceeded by nearly a factor of two the maximum permitted exterior sound levels and the lack of the required operating licenses - both establishments continue to operate. Local accommodation providers in the area and private homes complain that the loud music is played late into the night, disturbing residents and tourist visitors. Local officials, quoted in NusaBali are calling for urgent and stern official action. The Secretary of Commission B of the Badung House of Representatives, I Wayan Puspanegara, said: "Just close them down, they been warned a number of times, but they continue to act in this way. To the affiliated agencies, the provincial tourism agency (Disparda) and community enforcement agency (Satpol PP) I call on them to urgently take action. In that area, there are homes and accommodations providers." Puspanegara continued: "This is what you'd call scofflaws. They been reminded and inspected on numerous occasions. Moreover, the public have

Bali Shangrila Beach Club

made written complaints to both the DPRBadung and the Regency's government." Separately, the head of the Badung tourist office (Disparda Badung), I Made Subaws, confirmed that both his office and the local village authorities have given reminders to the errant businesses. He also confirmed that the two night spots lack any operating licenses, despites offers of assistance in applying for the needed permits. Ground Zero = Zero Rules and Regulations Another member of the DPR-Badung from Legian complained that any existing rules for licenses surrounding Ground Zero and the October 12th Bombing Monument have been largely forgotten. The Chairman of Commission A of the DPR-Badung, IGN Sudiarsa, told NusaBali that the Regent of Badung issued an order after the October 2002 bombing that businesses along Jalan Legian would be limited to international restaurants as a sign of respect to the tragedy that occurred in the area. Explained Sudiarsa, "At this time, this area is now used for bars and similar enterprises . . . has the Regent's rule just vanished?" Sudiarsa lamented the lack of synergy, saying that local officials are not only weak but never take firm action. He called for a review of the rules for Jalan Legian and a clear explanation on what rules apply. The legislator said that the entire street is now crowded with entertainment venues, offending both the historical significance of the area and existing zoning/use rules Www.balidiscovery.com

Warning over 'temporary' tats for kids THE PARENTS of a five-year-old boy who had a `henna' tattoo on his arm while on holiday in Bali fear he may have been left scared for life. There were no problems initially after little Cannon Crib was painted with the 'temporary' tat of a dragon stretching almost from the top of his arm almost to his elbow. But when the ink faded after a fortnight, the entire area welted into the shape of the original image, reports the Gold Coast Bulletin. Cannon's parents now believe the tattoo contained a substance containing para-phenylenediamine (PPD). Their baffled doctor is treating the wound as a chemical burn, requiring mum Leiona Cribb to dress it several times a day and apply a steroid cream. See more

pics here. "It looks as though someone has branded him with a red dragon," said Mrs Cribb. "I really hope it doesn't scar. We're hopeful but it's the whole length of his arm; a huge dragon." It wasn't until the last portion of ink wore off at the end of the two-week holiday that the arm 'puffed up' in welts and became itchy. The itchiness was unbearable to the point Cannon couldn't sleep well but gradually improved. The Australasian College of Dermatologists has in the past warned about the tattoos, which have been known to cause huge bubbled blisters. The number of reported cases of reactions in Aussie holiday-makers has grown with the popularity of the tattoos. The college warns that allergic

reactions can cause 'life-long side effects'. These include ongoing skin problems, scarring, raised skin and a change in pigmentation. Victims can also be left with a permanent allergy to anything containing PPD, such as hair dye, creams and certain clothing dyes. Although the tattoos are advertised as containing 'henna', a natural reddish substance used by Indians to paint their hands and feet, it actually contains chemical colours and high levels of PPD. The substance, a known allergen, is used to hasten the dye process, enhance darkness and improve pattern definition. The college said the term 'temporary henna tattoo' was misleading.

A YOUNG American tourist has survived a terrifying train ride in which he clung to the outside of the legendary Ghan in the freezing dark as it hit speeds up to 110km/h in the South Australian Outback. Chad Vance, 19, frantically pursued The Ghan after missing it in Port Augusta, managing to climb on and squeeze himself into a tiny stairwell as the train raced for almost 200km through the night. It was two hours and 20 minutes before a Ghan crew member heard the Alaskan student's desperate cries for help about 20km south of Pimba and brought the train to an emergency halt, the Sunday Mail reports. "I was worried I wasn't going to survive," Mr Vance said of his ride on Thursday, May 28. "If I'd fallen off at that speed and hit the nasty-looking rocks below, I don't think I would have made it." The Ghan crew member Marty Wells turned lifesaver when he heard Mr Vance's frantic calls for help and pulled the train's emergency brake handle, rescuing the tourist from a potentially fatal predicament. "Chad is a very lucky guy when we rescued him his skin was white and his lips were blue," said Mr Wells, a technician with The Ghan's operator, Great Southern Railway. "We were still about three hours away from our next scheduled stop and in that time, he could have easily died of hypothermia or lost his grip and fallen to his death if he hadn't been rescued." Mr Vance's extraordinary tale

of survival began when he boarded The Ghan in Adelaide on Thursday for the journey to Alice Springs. Like most passengers in the seated carriages, he took an opportunity to stretch his legs during a short stop in the Mid-North town of Port Augusta around 5.30pm. The university student, from the small hamlet of North Pole, in central Alaska, went for a stroll in town, but after losing track of time arrived back at the platform just as The Ghan was pulling out. On board was all his luggage and valuables, including his passport and train ticket. Having already travelled by train from Sydney to Adelaide, after arriving in Australia on May 17, Mr Vance said he knew The Ghan would pull up just outside of town to change drivers before continuing its journey. He decided to chase the train before it came to a rest. Mr Vance said when he caught up to the stopped train, he started frantically banging on the windows of the first class dining carriage. He said the passengers ignored him because they "probably thought I was some crazy kid" outside. After five minutes, the train started to slowly pull away again, leaving Mr Vance thinking he would be stuck in Port Augusta with just $10, a digital camera and the shirt on his back. The young tourist then made an "instinctive" decision - which he admitted in retrospect was a "pretty crazy idea" - and managed to grab hold of the stairwell near the rear of the train and swing himself into a cramped sitting position. As the night progressed and the train picked up speed, the temperature outside The Ghan plummeted.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology the thermometer dipped to 8.4C at Woomera on the night in question. Clad only in a pair of boots, jeans and a T-shirt, Mr Vance also had to deal with the severe windchill factor, which according to a weather calculator puts the temperature around -7C. Two hours and 20 minutes after jumping into the stairwell, Mr Vance's desperate calls for help were answered. Mr Wells said that after being brought on board, the exhausted and freezing backpacker collapsed to the floor. "He was also shaking uncontrollably for several hours and complained of numbness to the left side of his body and arms and said his face was also stinging," Mr Wells said. "I've never seen anything like this before and I sure hope I don't ever see it happen again." Mr Vance received first aid from the crew - including a cup of soup - and was upgraded to a sleeper cabin for a hot shower and warm night's sleep. His youth and a childhood of cold climate conditioning meant Mr Vance made a speedy recovery. "I got off the train the next day in Alice Springs and headed out on a tour of Uluru and Kings Canyon," Mr Vance said. The psychology major student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, left Darwin today for Cairns, for some scuba diving on the Great Barrier Reef, before heading back to Sydney and then home on June 17.

Bali to Host National and International Kempo Back-to-Back Kempo Championships to Be Held in July 2009. Plans are in place for Bali to host both a national Kempo championship followed by an international championships in the sport. The international championships are expected to attract 400 kenshi hailing from 20 countries on July 25-26, 2009, at Bali's Lila Bhuana Sports Complex. Included among the countries expected to participate are Russia, Sweden, Australia, Timor Leste, U.S.A., Brazil. The Vice-Chairman of the Indonesian Kempo Association (Perkemi), Fredrik Billy, has told the press that preparations for the international championships are now 70% complete. An advance team comprised of organizers and Japanese Kempo officials visited Bali on May 22-24 to review preparations for the events. According to Billy, the advance team of Japanese and Indonesian officials totaling 12 people found no major obstacle that could impede the championships in July. As regards athlete participation, we have already coordinated that with travel agents," Billy explained. Billy dismissed and concerns being expressed on the close proximity of his events with the presidential elections scheduled for July 8th. "I can't see them (the elections) as having any effect. What's more, we asked for security from the State," continued Billy. Just prior to the international championships in Bali, the Island's perkemi will host the Indonesian Open Championships in Kempo. To be held July 20-22, The international event will be held July 25-26 with the Indonesian athletes victorious at the Indonesian championships earning the right to represent their country at the international championships three days later. Bali Bars Cry Foul Over Sweeping Alcohol Seizures High-end hotels in Bali are demanding the return of thousands of bottles of liquor that were confiscated by authorities last week, saying the heavyhanded move could ruin the tourist island's international image. Perry Markus, Bali secretary general of the Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association (PHRI), on Monday said that the crackdown by customs officials, who claimed the bottles had counterfeit tax labels, hurt the hospitality industry's credibility. "We are worried that our customers may not trust us anymore," Perry said, adding that the inconvenience was compounded by the fact that the raid was conducted during the peak tourism season. The liquor was confiscated on Thursday from at least 13 high-end hotels and restaurants across Bali, and Perry said the raids were unfair because businesses had not been warned about checking tax labels. "We bought those bottles from distributors and we were not aware of the labels' origins," he said. "The customs office should have checked out the distributors first."

Liputan6.com reported that when officers examined the bottle labels under ultraviolet light, they did not find holographic markings that indicate the appropriate duties were paid. Perry said that the raids could dramatically affect occupancy rates at hotels. "Guests will not believe that a five-star hotel does not sell any alcoholic beverages," he said. Republika.co.id quoted an officer from Bali's customs office, who refused to be named, as saying that similar raids would be carried out across Indonesia. The official also said that the Bali busts were ordered by the Ministry of Finance in Jakarta. Ketut Adiputra, vice chairman of the Bali Legislative Council, said the customs office had never instructed hotels and restaurants on how to ensure the tax labels were genuine. He also said that the spot checks on all liquor might have been prompted by the deaths of 25 people in Bali who drank tainted locally produced alcohol. "There is a procedure for distributing and selling alcoholic

beverages in Bali," he said. "[The customs officers] should have looked more carefully at whether the hotels and restaurants met the requirements or not." Aulianty Fellina Rikal, the marketing and communications manager at the Hard Rock Hotel Bali, said that so far the raids had not severely impacted her hotel. "We're lucky we still have stocks [of alcoholic beverages]," she said. Aulianty said the raids were confusing because her hotel never had problems when buying liquor from its supplier. "We're looking at this as a lesson to be more careful in picking suppliers," she said. Perry said that PHRI would seek action from Bali Governor I Made Mangku Pastika, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Ministry of Finance. "We don't want Bali's tourism industry to have a bad image because of this," he said.

Move to limit use of 'invasive' full-body scanners A PASSENGER campaign to stop images of their private parts being shown in airport scanners is a step closer to success with the passing of a US Bill limiting the use of the controversial devices. The Bill bans full-body scanners as the sole or primary method of screening at US airports, allowing their use only when another method of screening demonstrates the need for further testing. The Bill was passed 310-118 amid ongoing concerns the full-body imaging technology acts as an intrusive "virtual strip search". The move could also have worldwide implications on the use of the technology. The scanners, which went on trial in Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide last October, use radio waves to form a 360-degree, threedimensional image of a person's body beneath their clothes in order to check them for weapons. US Representative Jason Chaffetz, who sponsored the Bill, said there was no need for the "intrusive" technology and expressed

concern there was no guarantee the pictures wouldn't end up being saved or copied. “There comes a point when, in the name of safety and security, we overstep that line, and we have an invasion of privacy,” Mr Chaffetz told The Salt Lake Tribune. “You don't need to look at my wife and eight-year-old daughter naked to secure that aeroplane.” The US Civil Liberties Union backed the Bill, arguing the images produced are humiliating and an assault. Meanwhile, the European Union has also expressed concerns about the technology and have called for safeguards to prevent the revealing images from being stored or published. "I think this is an offence against human dignity. Using this technology does not make us safer," said the leader of the assembly's Socialist group, Martin Schulz. "These are machines that allow for you to be seen totally naked," Mr Schulz said. The technology faced similar opposition when it was unveiled here,

with civil liberty experts calling it intrusive. Adelaide University civil liberties expert Allan Perry said the technology could breach people's privacy if used as a general measure for all passengers rather than those identified as a security risk. "If this is done on a widespread basis without selectivity it certainly goes beyond an appropriate balance of personal privacy and security," he said. There are 19 airports in the US testing the new technology. The machines are used as a primary screening device in six of those airports, and the US Transportation Security Administration says that up to 99 per cent of passengers have opted to undergo the screening, “demonstrating a widespread public acceptance of it”. The Bill now faces the Senate, where it runs the risk of being dismissed.

Three Cathay Pacific Executives on Unpaid Leave Travel to Bali to Paint a Local Orphanage. In difficult economic times, such as these, many are compelled to cut back, curtail and economize. Forced to take unpaid leave by their companies, some would choose to sit home wallowing in self-pity, angry at the world and their "difficult" circumstances. Yet others in the same circumstance will decide to take their temporary suspension in stride, reflecting on the good fortune of having a job to return to determining how best to utilize the coming work break. Accentuating the positive in this manner is exactly what three Cathay Pacific Airways executives did, when in May 2009, they were put on temporary unpaid leave as an airline cost-saving measure.

Dennis Owen the U.S. Marketing Manager, together with Shirley Liu and Leslie Lu from the airline's headquarters in Hong Kong, used their own funds and purchased firm-space employee passes on Cathay Pacific so they could fly to Bali to spend a week painting a local orphanage. Checking into a local hotel and purchasing paint and brushes from a local hardware store, the three energetic Cathay Pacific managers spent a week painting the entire Mercy Orphanage in Denpasar Bali. Established in 2001 by Mr. and Mrs. Paulus Wiranto to care for abandoned and orphaned children, Mercy Orphanage now has 9 homes throughout Indonesia caring for some 180 children. Responding when and

where the need is often the greatest, Mercy Orphanages have been established facilities in eastern Indonesia to care for war refuges from East Timor and in Aceh for tsunami victims. Governor Pastika Insists that He Will Not Enforce New AntiPornography Law. In a defiant break with central authority in the Republic, Bali's governor Made Mangku Pastika has bee quoted by Reuters and The Jakarta Post as saying "he has no intention" of enforcing the anti-pornography law signed by President Yudhoyono last December. Insisting that the law violates Balinese cultural values and is not in keeping with the aspirations of the people of Bali, Pastika said, "as long as I am the governor of Bali, I, along with the head of the provincial government in Bali, have stated that we will not enforce this law." Defending the tendency of Balinese art to celebrate nudity and eroticism, the governor said his fellow Balinese held the view

that : "The artworks and cultural practices of Bali are not in any way meant to be pornographic. They are meant to educate and communicate about the essence of life and existence." While the Central Government has decreed that tourism-related activities are exempted by the new antipornographic law, there is widespread concern that dance, theatre, painting, sculpting, monuments and even bathing in local streams will be threatened by legislatively imposed inhibitions from Jakarta. The legislation is also criticized for it's vigilante content, allowing individual citizens to impose their own view of what constitutes pornography and encouraging individual action against people deemed to be causing moral outrage.

The governor's defiant stance has brought neither rebuke or reprimand from the Central Government. While some interpret this as a return to Indonesia's longheld tradition of tolerance, some political observers suggest the government is eager to sidestep any confrontation on polarizing issue that could cost valuable votes in Bali where the new law is unpopular or in Java where fundamentalist Islamic followers enthusiastically embrace the law's intent. Another eight games, another bunch of highlights, lowlights, winners, grinners, sinners and moments to remember. Here's our take on round 11 of AFL. The Brownlow Banker: Crown Palladium, Monday, September 21, 2009. AFL boss Andrew Demetriou fixes tie, clears throat and says: "Round 11, West Coast v Geelong. Three votes, Geelong, G. Ablett." Was he best on ground? Probably up there with Matthew Scarlett, Paul Chapman and even Travis Varcoe. Will he get the votes? You bet. Ablett had 43 touches on Sunday evening against the willing Eagles. A lot were garnered with little impact, unlike Chris Judd for Carlton the night before, but after last year's nearmiss on Medal night he will get three here. Adam Goodes and Judd loom as the only two capable of him bagging the Brownlow he longs for. The Golden Moment: Carlton fans will say Brendan Fevola's bag in Brisbane was the climax of Saturday night's entertaining match with the Lions, and rightly so. There's no doubt Fev was the matchwinner, but Jared Brennan provided the breathtaking moments of the evening. The 2002 No.3 draft pick showed all his mind-boggling talent in a two-minute burst in the second quarter. One-handed pick-ups, a sublime snap from the pocket and another hook around the body that would've made Daniel Motlop blush. He's far from the complete footballer but the boy is an almighty talent. Didn't See That Coming: North Melbourne foot soldier Sam Power will watch the tape and still not expect to be cleaned up by St Kilda colossus Steven King. Power, the brother of Brisbane Lions star Luke, was making his way through the centre of Etihad Stadium when King cleaned him up. Power woke some time later with a splitting headache and joined a list of Kangaroos casualties. A week after teammate Michael Gardiner copped a week, King is likely to be slugged by the match review panel. Although another Saint, Leigh Montagna, reported "Steven has a bruise under

his eye, he says it was an accidental head clash". On the upset front, most punters thought the Lions at home would account for the Blues. Wrong.

The Biggest Flop: Big stage and an even bigger build-up, but Melbourne Demons failed to fire in the first quarter of the Queen's Birthday blockbuster against Collingwood. Jack Watts carried the hopes of the red-and-blue faithful into the match but the kid couldn't hold off a rampant Magpies. At quarter-time Mick Malthouse had guided his side to a seven-goal lead and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Last Laugh: Big Fev had a running sideshow to his seven-goal haul with a run-in with Joel Macdonald and plenty of byplay with the home crowd. He was laughing last, therefore best. But another bloke smiling again is St Kilda big man Justin Koschitzke, and doesn't he deserve it. The injury-plagued Saint has fainted on live television, been cleaned up by an umpire, and cruelled by softtissue complaints. source market for Bali. Through the end of the first four months of 2009 Australian arrivals totaled 102,179 increasing 30.08% as compared to the same period in 2008. Indonesian Tourism will Continue to Grow Minister Wacik: World Financial Crisis May Slow, But Not Halt Growth of National Tourism Sector. Indonesia's Minister of Culture and Tourism, Jero Wacik, has renewed his assertion that the national tourism sector has nothing to worry about in the face of the worldwide financial crisis. Wacik, as quoted by the State news agency Antara, said: "Indeed foreign tourist arrivals are not as dynamic as they were before the crisis. Nonetheless, we are confident our tourism arrivals that (formerly) grew at a rate of between 15-16% can still achieve around 5-6% growth." The Minister's comments were made at a opening ceremony for a new hotel in the Tuban area of South Kuta. Wacik cited a World Tourism Organization (WTO) survey that estimates world tourism will shrink by

2 percent because of the current financial crisis, but that tourism in the Asia region is expected to perform marginally better and actually grow slightly in 2009. Wacik continued: "We often look at a figure of 5% as small, but when compared to other countries, we are still O.K.. If new hotels can still open, this means tourists are still coming to Indonesia. A few days ago I opened a new hotel in Manado (North Sulawesi), yesterday in Bandung (West Java), today in Bali and soon another hotel in Bandung." The Minister in charge of national tourism also urged the management of the nation's hotels to act cautiously when taking business decision tied to hotel occupancy levels. "If the occupancy level is still above

60%, that's still good. If that number goes down, don't rush to lay-off employees. That's getting ahead of yourself," warned Wacik. He urged all tourism professionals including hoteliers, to be patient if there is a decrease in visitors for he is certain that in the months ahead, assuring all that the numbers will once again grow. Wacik added: "Because of this, hotels must continue to promote so tourists will continue to come. Everyone must promote Indonesia for visits by foreign tourists." The Minister said that his ministry will always support international events in Indonesia, in order that these events can stimulate additional visitors to fill the country's hotels. Jakarta Pledges Limited Commercialization at Bali's Airport Minister Djusman Safei Djamal Says No More than 30% of Bali's Airport Can be Dedicated to Commercial Use. In seeming response to criticism from Bali's governor that Bali's airport is being overcommercialized, Indonesia's Minister of Transportation, Djusman Safei Djamal has assured Bali that only a maximum of 30% of the entire airport will be used for commercial pursuits. During a visit to Bali, the Transportation Minister reminded the management of Bali's Airport, PT Angkasa Pura, not to commercialize a planned 40% of the airport. As reported by

beritabali.com, the Minister's rebuke to the airport's management followed the rejection by Bali's governor of redevelopment plans for the airport that would dedicate 40% of the airport space to commercial leases. As reported on Balidiscovery.com, Bali's governors is involved in a verbal tug-of-war with the Manager of the Bali Airport authority over current plans for the design of the revamped airport. Governor Pastika has threatened to refuse building permits for the remodeling if, in his opinion, the new design puts commercialization before efficiency and customer

convenience. The governor is also demanding that Balinese architectural touches must be incorporated into any final design. Djusman Safei told the press in Bali that the governor's wishes must be made a prime consideration and that, in any case, current regulations limit the amount of commercialized space to no more than 30% of the entire area of the airport with all remaining area dedicated to "traffic management". The entire area of Bali's airport complex following the planned redevelopment will cover 100,000 square meters. Www.balidiscovery.com

Tourism Chief Calls for End to Custom's Raids Bali Tourism Boss Subhisku Says Government Should Be Chasing Distributors of Illegal Custom's Stamps, Not Restaurants and Hotels. The Bali Tourism Service (DIPARDA) is urging the Bali Customs and Excise office to halt sweeping raids being conducted against Bali hotels and restaurants in the current drive to halt the sale of wine and liquor bearing counterfeit customs stamps. The Chief Tourism Official for Bali, Ida Bagus Subhisku, issued a statement of June 2, 2009, underlining the fact that Bali's hotels and restaurants purchase their alcohol supplies from official distributors appointed by the government. According to Subhisku, if there is in fact smuggled alcohol being used, it is the distributors who should be under scrutiny and not Bali's hotels and restaurants.

28

Quoted in berita.bali.com, Subhisku said: "Now it is the distributors who must be chased, not people from our (tourism) industry. This is a lopsided approach." Subhisku said his call for end to sweeping by Customs and Excise officials of hotels and restaurants is based on the high demands for alcoholic beverages as Bali enters into its busiest business period or high season. Up until June 2, 2009, DIPARDA recorded around 13 hotels and restaurants where custom's officials had seize liquor stocks in the

course of their continuing "sweeping" raids.

Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss wants cover for injured players Brisbane Lions coach Michael Voss has joined growing calls for the AFL to cap interchanges or introduce a substitute rule as injuries become a bigger issue than at any point in the game's history. And he also wants the league to consider re-introducing a mid-season draft to allow clubs to cover key injury losses. Voss first raised the two ideas in a pre-season submission to the league but has now gone public after a weekend where two results were directly influenced by injuries. He has called on all of the game's stakeholders, the league, clubs and media to engage in a "rigorous" debate about the merits of capping interchanges or introducing substitutes to limit the adverse effects of injuries. He proposes capping interchanges at 80 per game and said the inevitable rorting of a substitute system could be negated by a rule that made players who had been substituted ineligible to play the following week. Voss warned that increasingly rapid-fire interchanges had made the game too dangerous and also more unfair to teams which lose players to game-ending injuries.

The Kangaroos finished their game against St Kilda with only 17 fit players while Brisbane lost rising star Josh Drummond to a calf injury in the opening minutes. "There is a definite disadvantage of losing a player very early in the game," he said. "It puts a tremendous amount of pressure on another group of players, which then increases the likelihood of injuries on those guys." The Lions lost their round-four clash to Collingwood when Jed Adcock and Jamie Charman were unable to compete after half-time and the Magpies ramped up their rotations and ran the tiring Brisbane outfit off their feet. "I know that if an opposition player goes down I'm ramping up my rotations too because I'm making sure that the intensity is right up there so I put some massive load on the other players," he said. "Some may say that's part of coaching and that might be part of the sport but I think it's got to the point the keel is starting to go the other way. "I'm not suggesting you still can't win, but I do think it does load up the other players and we do increase

the likelihood of the number of injuries because of the increased fatigue of the other players." Former Richmond coach Terry Wallace last year proposed the AFL allow sides to name two reserves who could be called on during games if their teammates suffered game-ending injuries. It was well received after trials during the pre-season tournament. Voss's early-year submission to the AFL also included calls for a mid-season draft. Brisbane have ruckmen Charman and Matthew Leuenberger on the long-term injury list while defenders Daniel Merrett and Joel Patfull have also missed more than a month of football. "I wouldn't mind it (a mid-season draft) right now, I think I'd be looking across Australia for a defender," he said.

Sydney Swans enforcer Barry Hall fighting for his playing future Sydney Swans' forward Barry Hall admits he has half an AFL season to convince the Swans he can be trusted not to lose his temper again following his latest onfield outburst. Hall, 32, is again fighting to prolong his career after costing his team badly by conceding three successive 50-metre penalties in the final quarter, which contributed to the Swans' 11-point defeat to Hawthorn at the MCG on Sunday. His latest brain snap again raised doubts over whether he can handle the pressure of playing in the AFL, particularly after the Swans imposed a club ban on him last year, following his suspensions for striking West Coast's Brent Staker and attempting to strike Collingwood's Shane Wakelin. Sydney were angry with Hall for conceding the penalties, which gifted the Hawks a goal at a crucial time and changed the momentum of the game. The Swans' loss left them with a 5-6 win-loss record and outside the eight. Hall agreed with coach Paul Roos that his actions in remonstrating with the umpire and clashing with Hawks Jarryd Roughead and Sam Mitchell, which brought on the penalties, changed the game and cast new doubt over his future. “In the scheme of things, we had the momentum ... it turned the game totally and if another player from my side did that I'd be filthy with him,'' he told Network Ten's One HD station. “So I've got to wear that. “We (he and his teammates) spoke about it after the game and they were disappointed. “It was really disappointing and I knew that. confirmed the club's leadership group did not want to impose a suspension, which clears him to play Collingwood in the second weekend of the split round 12. “No doubt they were disappointed, but they're ready to move on,” he said. Hall said he often found himself frustrated in AFL games, mainly through the lack of free kicks he received from umpires. But he conceded he also gave umpires a "hard time". Hall said his anger over recent years had stemmed from his inability to handle the criticism directed at him for his poor performance in the 2006 grand final, when Sydney were beaten dramatically, I could go downhill by West Coast by one point. from here. "We played Bora Bora last year and there were loads of Australians there in support with flags and we will definitely be performing there this year," he says. Ibiza has often been regarding as the paradise playground for Brits, whose booze-fuelled antics have helped coin the island's signature phrase: "sand, sea, sound and sex". Every year global revellers make the hedonist pilgrimage to the Mediterranean pleasure Mecca to experience the world's best parties in the world's biggest clubs. Sports Corner

The View: Fox Sports provides its take on round 13 of the NRL season Round 13 of the NRL premiership had a full complement of off-field drama and on-field heroics. And, as always, there was something to talk about in between. The Dally M darling: Cronulla have justifiably come in for a lot of flak this season, but their fortunes, on the field at least, looked to have turned a corner in the last two weeks. And central to that revival has been the inspirational figure of Trent Barrett. Big things were expected from the 31-year-old upon his return from England this season, and he has, on the whole, delivered performances of a consistently high level even if his team hasn't. In a bid to kick-start their season, the Sharks shook up their playing personnel after the loss to St George last month dumping a number of high profile players and promoting some talented youngsters. Barrett has seemingly revelled in a 'baby-sitting' role providing vital experience and leadership and giving hope to a future generation of Sharks. His Origin days are probably passed him but Barrett wouldn't look out of place in a Blues jumper for the second game in Sydney on June 24. Origin debate: New South Wales are unlikely to tinker too much with their line-up for game two, but several positions could up for grabs in game three if Queensland have wrapped the series up. Chief among them could be the back-row where a number of candidates have stated a compelling case in recent weeks. Nathan Hindmarsh, Zeb Taia, Anthony Tupou and Trent Waterhouse must all come under consideration if the incumbents fail to fire in Sydney. Another position sure to be hotly debated is five eighth, where Jarrod Mullen continues to impress and put a lot of pressure on Terry Campese. James McManus didn't really do much to suggest that he was the long-term solution on the right wing either and David Williams, among others, could be given an opportunity. Didn't see that coming: So much for 'fortress EnergyAustralia Stadium'! Newcastle Knights blew their nine-match winning streak at home to a team with the second-worst away record in the NRL. Parramatta's only previous success on the road in 2009 had come way back in round two at ANZ Stadium against Souths. In the meantime, they had conceded 48 points against the Bulldogs, 40 against the Broncos and 34 against Manly. It seemed, on paper, to be one of the easier games of the round to predict. But the Eels, even with star player Jarryd Hayne ineffective, for once, were inspired by Nathan Hindmarsh and Daniel Mortimer, son of former Bulldogs great Peter, and really should have won by more than 2018. The Eels, of course, have flattered to deceive many times in the past but they

could actually haul themselves back into the premiership race if they play with the same commitment in the coming weeks. Golden moment: The look on FuiFui MoiMoi's face when he scored what turned out to be the matchwinner for Parramatta against Newcastle on Sunday was priceless. The giant Tongan backed up some magical play from young halfback Daniel Mortimer to score under the posts and hand the Eels an upset victory. The four-pointer should be something to really savour because it doesn't happen all that often. In 81 appearances for the Eels, the yellow-andblue-braided-one has scored just nine tries and only three of them have come in the last three years. The lead-up to the try deserves special mention as well. Mortimer's grubber and re-gather evoked memories of his famous uncle Steve. Biggest flop: Plenty of worthy candidates again this weekend. Wests Tigers seem to be a perennial visitor to this space in recent times. The Warriors, despite enjoying an overwhelming amount of possession, couldn't put away Cronulla. The Dragons were only excused because of their flying finish on the Gold Coast. Manly and the Roosters rivalled the Parramatta-Cronulla clash for the worst game of the season so far. So that leaves the Knights. After beating the Warriors, Manly, Gold Coast Brisbane and the Bulldogs at home, the Knights came unstuck against, of all teams, Parramatta. And it was no fluke! As Knights coach Brian Smith readily admitted, they were beaten by the better team. In truth, the score-line flattered the home side greatly. With the way the results went over the weekend, this ended up being a huge missed opportunity for the Knights. A win would have pushed them up to third, instead they now find themselves in seventh. Spray of the week: The Lawnmower Man made quite a name for himself both on and off the field on Sunday. Fresh from playing a starring role in Cronulla's 18-10 victory over the Warriors, young halfback Scott Porter was interviewed by Fox Sports and the fun began. A pumped-up Porter used a certain 'choice' word at least three times to describe his combination with new captain Trent Barrett. That's fine, Scott, when you're talking to your mates, but on television, c'mon! He later apologised. “I just want to say sorry for swearing on the Fox Sports, I just got a bit excited. I didn't even realise. I was just so excited for winning again, it just slipped out someone told me. I didn't even realise that I did it, one of the boys told me, and I just want to say sorry. I need to do a little bit of media training I think, I'm struggling.”

Watch this space: Does the outbreak of swine flu among Queensland players put the next round of NRL matches in jeopardy? The revelation on Sunday that Bulldogs prop Ben Hannant had contracted the virus rocked the NRL and was followed on Monday morning by the news that all Queensland players were to be placed in quarantine, subject to the return of tests for the bug later this week. NRL chief operating officer Graham Annesley indicated the league would continue to be guided by health authorities, but you would think that if even if some of the tests come back positive, there would be major doubt over what is shaping as a crucial round. One game in particular would be seriously affected. It's second against fourth when the Bulldogs visit Brisbane in potentially one of the best games of the season and both teams will not want to be without key players. The Last Laugh: Gold Coast Titans continue to defy the doomsayers who say they are headed for a dramatic fall. On the contrary, Monday night's impressive victory has pushed them into a share of the lead with the Bulldogs and Dragons and they must now be taken seriously as genuine premiership hopefuls. The main source of their success has been their incredible home form Newcastle, Bulldogs, Manly, Canberra, Souths and St George have all tasted defeat on their visits to Skilled Stadium. But their away form hasn't been too shabby either as Melbourne Storm and North Queensland have found out to their detriment. They are coming out of a very tough patch of games and must be looking forward to their upcoming schedule which includes matches against the Roosters, Warriors, Raiders and Eels. In other words, don't expect a fade out this season. What's His Name Again He Had A Belter: The Melbourne Storm have had two established wingers in Steve Turner and Anthony Quinn for a few years now but the form of young gun Joseph Tomane is sure to have them both peering anxiously over their shoulders. With Quinn suffering concussion, the 19-year-old has played four of the last five Storm games and played a starring role in the 48-4 demolition of Brisbane at Olympic Park last Friday night. Tomane was the main beneficiary of Billy Slater and Greg Inglis' dominance in attack, scoring a hat-trick of tries in a match haul of 24 points. He made 15 runs for a total gain of 142 metres and also produced 10 tackle busts. His goalkicking has also proved of immense value to the Storm and has taken the pressure off captain Cameron Smith. Meanwhile, Cronulla's youngsters continue to lead the way in the club's on-field revival. Fullback Nathan Stapleton and halfback Scott Porter were among the stand-outs in the victory over the Warriors.

Vettel, frustrated, was third ahead of Italian Jarno Trulli in a Toyota, German Nico Rosberg for Williams and Brazilian Felipe Massa who was sixth for Ferrari. Pole Robert Kubica confirmed BMW Sauber's revival after a disappointing start to the season, by finishing seventh ahead of German Timo Glock in the second Toyota. Briton Jenson Button extended his lead at the head of the drivers' world championship to more than 20 points when he cruised to an unexpectedly comfortable victory in the Turkish Grand Prix. The 29-year-old Englishman, once again revelling in the excellence of his Brawn GP car, clinched his sixth win in seven races this season with a virtually flawless demonstration of smooth and well-judged racing. He won the race in a time of one hour, 26 minutes and 24.848 seconds, finishing six seconds ahead of second-placed Australian Mark Webber. Gifted the lead on the opening lap, when pole-sitting German Sebastian Vettel made a mistake and ran off while leading, Button took control and measured his drive to perfection to record the seventh win of

a handy cameo. But the only other batsmen to crack 20 runs were Shane Watson (22 off 21) and Ricky Ponting (25 off 15). Lee claimed the early scalp of Sanath Jayasuriya for two, brilliantly caught overhead by David Warner at full stretch right on the backward square leg boundary. But the veteran Sri Lankan's opening partner Dilshan carved out an important innings before Michael Clarke bowled him with his first ball of the match, having come into the attack in the 10th over. Sangakkara stepped up his scoring after Dilshan's dismissal and stood firm against the Australians. "It feels really great to beat a side like Australia," Sangakkara said. "It's unfortunate that they've had two bad games in a tournament and that means that they're out of it. "But we've had that experience with the Australians before. “We beat them, they bounce back. Captain Ricky Ponting said his team would spend the evening dissecting their performance before the Test players began their preparation in Leicester while waiting for the remainder of the squad to arrive. We'll have a chat about where our Twenty20 cricket is at tonight and then we've got to move on from it pretty quickly because we've got some Test matches just around the corner." Australia's cricketers will turn their attention to the Ashes after Sri Lanka knocked them out of the World Twenty20 with a six-wicket victory at Trent Bridge. Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara scored an unbeaten half century to lead his side to 4-160 with six balls remaining after Australia were restricted to 9-159 by some outstanding bowling from Ajantha Mendis, who took 3-20 off four overs. Sangakkara, who scored 55 off 42 balls, was well supported by opener Tillakaratne Dilshan (53 off 32), while Lasith Malinga claimed 336. The Australians' second group match was a must-win affair if they were to have any hope of reaching the Super Eight stage after losing to the West Indies by seven wickets. Their latest defeat extended a disappointing Twenty20 record with Australia having won only 11 of their 23 internationals. The defeat made it five straight for Australia in the shortened format. It also capped a nightmare tour following the dismissal of bighitting all-rounder Andrew Symonds,

Andrew Symonds fallout will linger for many years The Andrew Symonds debacle is a much greater mess than people realise. Already it is starting to fade from our newspapers because it no longer shocks people to read about sportsmen behaving badly. But the fallout is great and the scars will linger for many years. Symonds is understood to be in a very bad head space and so are the playing group in England who started the push to sack him. They are uneasy because they know, cricketing-wise, they have handed down a life sentence. They know they were right, but it is still a heavy burden and it's a small wonder some of them have had trouble sleeping since and Australia have gone belly-up in their first World Twenty20 match against the West Indies. Wendell Sailor may have been banished from sport for two years for taking drugs but the fact that he has reappeared and done so well has completely remodelled his reputation, mindset and marketability. Amazingly, Sailor is almost the feelgood story of the year, the outcast who became a cult hero. But Symonds will not get that chance. He is gone for good now. He will never wear his country's cap again and when people talk about him in 10 years they will remember him not as an Australian World Cup hero but as a man kicked out of the game by his peers. It's understood one of the players involved with making the decision is angry because he feels the players should never have had to take such a major stance and that Australia's selectors should have noted Symonds' erratic behaviour this year and never sent him on tour. That's a totally fair point.

Tough decision-making is not a strong suit of Australian cricket. It's been about a decade since Melbourne lawyer Malcolm Speed resigned as Cricket Australia chief executive officer but the Australian game still misses him because during crisis moments he is much tougher than anyone now in power. Speed had a filthy temper but that almost enhanced his worth as an administrator because it made him a man of conviction. He would never have allowed Symonds to get away with what he has over the years even if, as some people believe, Symonds' problem is a physical dependency on alcohol rather than him being a bad egg. The Australian game is also missing former selection chairman Trevor Hohns who was a very quiet but deceptively strong character. He once, when a half-cut Ian Botham was acting up on a flight to Perth, rose from his seat and ordered him to sit down. Only the brave do that. New selection chairman Andrew Hilditch has not made the same impression. He loves to put his tracksuit on and train with the Australia squad, something Hohns was not into because he felt there should always be a slight distance between him and the players, given he had to make the final call on their futures. Queensland Cricket has decided they will contract Symonds for next season which is a bolder decision than it looks. For the first time in decades Queensland have no regular Test player and may not find one for another two or three years at least. The Bulls have no player even close to winning a baggy green cap. Mitchell Johnson and Shane Watson have left the state for love interests and are not expected back. Matthew

Hayden has retired. Some people felt Queensland would do well to follow the lead of forward-thinking NSW and select a fleet of young players like the Blues have done in recent seasons, unearthing gold nuggets Phil Hughes, Dave Warner and fast bowler Josh Hazelwood, who have created enormous public interest. But Queensland has decided their future is their past and will go back to Symonds, who turns 34 on Tuesday. The Queensland environment will suit Symonds because where at Australian level players grew tired of his excesses, the Bulls players will cover up for him like they did last season. In their minds they will be doing him a favour - in fact it will be the worst thing for him. He needs a strong captain. Perhaps the worst mistake Symonds and his management made was pushing him headlong into the corporate world where he was never comfortable. When players take six-figure sums to lend their face and profile to a product sometimes they forget no one gives away free money. Those contracts meant time-soaking appearances at functions, before cameras, in transit and no player (perhaps apart from Damien Martyn) was less suited to this role in the modern era. Symonds offered to take a $200,000plus pay cut from Cricket Australia to cut down on his appearances but by that stage it was too late. Symonds will be paid around $1.5 million to play in next year's Indian Premier League. No doubt the big money Twenty20 offers will keep rolling in but more important than the money is finding the peace of mind that has cruelly eluded him for the past few painful years.

An Irish woman of advanced age visited her physician to ask his advice in reiving her husband's libido. 'What about trying Viagra?' asked the doctor. 'Not a chance', she said. 'He won't even take an aspirin.' 'Not a problem,' replied the doctor. 'Give him an 'Irish Viagra'. It's when you drop the Viagra tablet into his coffee. He won't even taste it.. Give it a try and call me in a week to let me know how things went.' It wasn't a week later when she called the doctor, who directly inquired as to her progress. The poor dear exclaimed, 'Oh, faith, bejaysus and begorrah! T'was horrid! Just terrible, doctor!' 'Really? What happened?' asked the doctor. 'Well, I did as you advised and slipped it in his coffee and the effect was almost immediate. He jumped straight up, with a twinkle in his eye and with his pants a-bulging fiercely! With one swoop of his arm, he sent me cups and tablecloth flying, ripped me clothes to tatters and took me then and there passionately on the tabletop! It was a nightmare, I tell you, an absolute nightmare!' 'Why so terrible?' asked the doctor, 'Do you mean the sex your husband provided wasn't good?' 'Feckin jaysus, 'twas the best sex I've had in 25 years! But sure as I'm sittin here, I'll never be able to show me face in Starbucks again!’

'I will give each of you one wish, which is three wishes in total', says the Genie. The Australian says, 'I am a farmer and my son will also farm. I want the land to be forever fertile in Australia ' POOF! With the blink of the Genie's eye, the land in Australia was forever fertile for farming. Osama was amazed, so he said, 'I want a wall around Afghanistan , Palestine, Iraq and Iran so that no infidels, Americans or Australians can come into our precious land.' POOF! Again, with the blink of the Genie's eye, there was a huge wall around those countries. The Biker says,'I am very curious. Please tell me more about this wall.' The Genie explains, 'Well, it's about 5,000 feet high, 500 feet thick and completely surrounds the country. Nothing can get in or out; it's virtually impenetrable.' The Biker sits down on his Harley, cracks a beer, lites a joint, smiles and says: 'Fill it with water.' Touche. 20

Erotic 'daggering' dance craze causing bodily harm AN erotic dance craze is thought to be the cause of a recent spate of broken penises in Jamaica, and now faces a government crackdown. "Daggering", a lewd dance style where couples simulate dry sex in various positions to the beat of the music, is characterised by overthe-top gyrating, heavy pelvisthrusting and daredevil leaps. Many couples have taken the “rough” daggering dance from the club to the bedroom, with disastrous consequences. Jamaican doctors were prompted to issue a warning on the dangers of daggering when presented with a range of fractured penises caused by rough intercourse. The number of cases tripled in the last year, the UK's Sun reports. The rising popularity of the new dance - and subsequent

public protests - have prompted the Jamaican government to ban songs and videos with blatantly sexual content. Jamaica's Broadcasting Commission, which defines daggering as a "colloquial term used in dancehall culture as a reference to hardcore sex or what is popularly referred to as 'dry sex' or the activities of persons engaged in the public simulation of various sexual acts and positions", enforced the ban in February. “There shall not be transmitted through radio or television or cable services, any recording, live song or music video which promotes the act of 'daggering', or which makes reference to, or is otherwise suggestive of 'daggering',” the Jamaican Broadcasting Commission's official statement said. Daggering is a newly accepted name for an activity that

has been present in Jamaica's dancehalls for many years. It is roughly the equivalent of the Caribbean's “cabin stabbing”, another crude style of music and dance. “Daggering is a dance that makes you unleash the beast! If you ain't know what I mean think about every sex position and put it in a dance,” commenter Driva said of the dance. A series of YouTube videos depict daggering as a rough, and sometimes violent, act which can be demeaning to women. One video shows popular group RDX performing its song Daggering live, with one member simulating extremely rough dry sex on the floor with a woman. The community is divided over the dance, with singers up in arms over the ban, saying it stifles their right to free speech, but others welcome the ban. Www.news.com.au
