Brotherly Love in the Hills of Kintamani Marriage Annulled after One Month When Groom and Local Villagers Discover the Bride is 'Just one of the Guys.' Front-page coverage on a number of Bali newspapers was dedicated recently to the sudden and very abrupt annulment of the marriage between Ketut Bud (30) and his wife, Ketut Nik (25) after only one month. As best we can piece together this story of a honeymoon cut short, Bud and Nik first met as the result of a misdirected SMS that eventually led to a "date." Blame it on "love at first sight" or even "bad lighting," but poor Ketut Bud was instantly smitten with Ketut Nik, managing to even "stay over" one night

at Nik's house where his ardour was only further fanned when the comely Ketut Nik refused the young man's amorous advances. Passions denied and loved spurned, Ketut Bud then re-doubled his resolve to pursue Ketut Nik, proposing marriage only three weeks later. The groom - Ketut Bud, may have been initially surprised by the lack of the customary village officials at the traditional wedding ceremony held at his bride's house, but he quickly dismissed any misgivings, rationalizing that in any case there would be another ceremony when he got his new wife back to his hilltop village. A couple gets amorous in one of the Southern Star's glass carriages last week. "I suppose it had to happen," said the observation wheel's chairman, Fred Maybury. Photo: Ken Irwin PERHAPS it was the balmy summer afternoon. Or the thrill of getting hot and heavy high above the city rooftops. Whatever the trigger, this couple (picture above) obviously found the view from the Southern Star last Thursday not nearly so tantalising as the sights on offer inside their glass capsule.

Mr Maybury said demand from locals had been strong but "it will take time to build up the numbers from people interstate and overseas".
Projections by the wheel's owners that 1.5 million people will pay to take a "flight" on the wheel each year now seem ambitious according to one worker. "We're not as busy as we hoped we'd be," she said.
The Southern Star's owners claim that 20 per cent of visitors will be locals, 30 per cent Victorians from outside Melbourne, 30 per cent from interstate and 20 per cent from overseas.
"If you come early in the
After a cursory glance at the city's expanding skyline, the couple embraced passionately before moving their 120-metrehigh public display of affection to the carriage's wooden bench. Unaware that Sunday Age photographer Ken Irwin and no doubt other patrons on the slowly revolving giant wheel had spied them, the pair gave the bench, and each other, a full workout. A CCTV camera each capsule is fitted with one would also have captured their sexy romp. The Southern Star's chairman Fred Maybury laughed when told of the incident. "I suppose it had to happen," he said.

In fact, the wheel's operators are unlikely to turn anyone away, with visitor numbers already well below anticipated levels.
When Britain's giant wheel, the London Eye, opened in January 2000 it took until July before the first couple a pair of 17-year-olds was caught in the act, sparking tabloid headlines such as "Mile Eye Club". The Eye's operators immediately banned couples from taking trips on their own, but Mr Maybury has ruled out such a ban on the Southern Star.
If the Southern Star were to reach its annual visitor projections of 1.5 million it would double the numbers of Melbourne's other main attractions. Both the Melbourne Museum and the aquarium had just under 750,000 visitors during 2007. Tourism expert Professor Brian King of Victoria University believes that the wheel's delayed opening may have contributed to lower visitor numbers.
morning or late in the evening it's very quiet, with the wheel running well below capacity. "Considering it's the school holidays, which should be the busiest time of the year, it's a bit disappointing." The Sunday Age visited the wheel thrice last week and on each occasion the number of passengers was well below the 342 per hour needed to reach the 1.5 million projection. On a balmy Thursday evening, just 72 people took a flight on the wheel between 6.30pm and 7.30pm. At one stage 12 of the wheel's 21 pods were empty.
The opening initially was planned to coincide with the 2006 Commonwealth Games but was repeatedly pushed back. "With any big new tourist development it's important to generate momentum with the expectation about its opening," Professor King said. "The London Eye was opened by Tony Blair on (millennium) New Year's Eve and it became a global event in itself." He said he had no doubt Melbourne's wheel would develop an international profile in time.
The Southern Star's owners refuse to say how many customers "There are definitely no plans they have had since the $100 to stop couples from enjoying flights million attraction opened but insist they are satisfied with the numbers. together at this stage," he said.

It's not altogether clear if those in attendence at the second wedding at Ketut Bud's house in Kintamani were just too polite to remark that Ketut's new bride was, well, just a little different looking. Some suggest that because the young man was already 30 years old, his parent and friends kept silent, relieved that, any physical peculiarities on the part of the bride aside, Ketut Bud had finally settled down. Not Tonight, Dear But, in any case, alarm bells should have begun sounding for the bridegroom when a neighbor cynically enquired about the status of Ketut Nik, asking if a nyetana ceremony had been held. The question, while peculiar, foreshadowed circumstances soon the be "unveiled." The nyetana is a particularly Balinese ceremony used to adopt a male into a heirless Balinese household. In this uniquely Balinese ceremony the bride becomes a male
heir and her husband a "nominal female" - exchanging their gender roles to permit the boy to be adopted as the male heir of his bride's household. This ceremony also allows a man to move into his bride's house where he official become a "son" and the male issue of the bride's family. More snide and somewhat pointed enquiries from neighbors apparently also failed to move Bud to action and investigate further the background of his new wide, Ketut Nik. Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered Married for more than a month, the incredibly gullible Ketut Bud also reportedly took in stride his bride's continuing refusal to consummate their marriage, refusing her husband's advances on a nightly basis; alternating excuses between
extreme frigidity and a chronic migraine. In the end, however, close proximity with the rest of the village and growing public knowledge of Ketut Bud's predicament in the bridal chamber brought matters to a boil. Village officials, took matters into their own hands, cornered the new bride and performed a physical examination that revealed Ketut Nik was, in fact, a fully equipped young man. Chagrinned and embarrassed, Ketut Bud and his family quickly bundled off Ketut Nik, returning “her” to her home village of Rendang followed by an announcement that the marriage was null and void. Villagers are reportedly still discussing what, if any, traditional ceremonies may be required to return balance and harmony to their corner of the universe.
Bali Tourism as a Three Ring Circus? Governor Pastika Delivers a Stinging Rebuke on How Bali Promotes its Tourism Products. BeritaBali.com reports that Bali tourism promotion recently came in for pointed criticism delivered by the Island's governor Made Mangku Pastika. Comparing Bali's tourism promotional efforts to the workings of a badly organized three-ring circus, Pastika labeled Bali's tourism marketing as ineffective and inefficient. The governor complained that the results achieved by tourism promotion compare poorly with the amount of money expended. Elaborating further, he said the billions of Rupiahs spent to promote tourism were more decorative than meaningful, focused on "playing" at tourism as opposed to "working" for the tourism industry,
Pastika went on to say: "There are many cultural delegations sent abroad. When they arrive at their overseas destinations they typically perform before the Indonesian embassy. What use is that? It's like a circus group without a clear mission." The Governor called on Bali's tourism promotion team to spend the billions of Rupiahs now dedicated to cultural missions be
diverted to international television promotion. Underling his message, Pastika said: "Make quality tourism promotion films. After that, show them on CNN and other international television channels. That will be far more useful than stage performances presented abroad. For 2009 Bali's promotional budget has been reduced from Rp. 5 billion to only Rp. 4 billion. [See: Bali Tourism Promotion Budget Reduced for 2009]. Closing his remarks with a final rebuke, Pastika said: "Tourism promotion groups which used to number 7 or more people should be reduced in size. Government officials with a third echelon rank or below should participate in such groups. Those promoting tourism abroad must also be people who really work to promote tourism, and not be on an overseas shopping trip."

Kapanlagi.com reports that Rp. 3 billion (US$270,000) is being spent on the building and equipping of a rehabilitation center to assist the disabled in Bali. Already in an advanced stage of construction, the handicapped rehabilitation center, to be operated by Bali's Social Services

In mess halls and parade squares across the country, Prince Harry's comments were being chewed over yesterday. As they pondered the media furore, some insisted his comments pointed to a wider problem of racism in the armed forces, but others were quick to come to his defence, claiming his critics had little or no understanding of army life.
Nabs, who spent 11 years in the British army, described the interest in Prince Harry's comments as "pure nonsense". "When I joined the army my first nickname was 'Private foreign bollocks', and it was a relief when people started calling me that because I knew that it meant I had been accepted," said the 38year-old British Muslim, whose family originate from Oman. "It is the sort of thing that is said with good humour among friends and in that context it is something that we can all take it. What counts in the army is that you are good at your job. If you are then you will get a bit of banter but you will also get respect. If you are not any good people will pick on whatever they can, whether that is that you are ginger or Irish or a woman." Nabs, who did not want to reveal his full identity, said he agreed with Patrick Mercer, the former Tory frontbench spokesman, who stood down after claiming that being called a "black bastard" was part and parcel of life in the armed forces for ethnic minorities.
Sink or Swim reported costing 15 lives. The Denpasar Tourism service has complained to the press that there efforts to post certain beaches as "no swim zones" has been thwarted by thieves who quickly steal warning signs installed on the beach. The Balinese names for its lifesaving service is ”Baliwista" which is an abbreviation for ”Badan Penyelamat Wisata Tirta” or “The Organization for Water Sports Rescue.”

Racist slur or army banter? What the soldiers say
However, no one with first-hand experience of the British military seemed remotely surprised that the 24-year-old, who is third in line to the throne, had chosen the term Paki to describe a fellow soldier.
Taking Root: The Vision of Wangari Maathi Bali's R.O.L.E. Foundation Hosts Two Showings of Documentary Film on the Work of Nobel Laureate Wangari Maathi.
Kuta Weekly
"I have been called a 'spear chucker' and a black this or that but it didn't worry me in the slightest because it is just a bit of banter that you give and take ... What people should be more concerned about is those people in the army who don't say anything to your face but are seriously racist behind your back. It is when you find yourself getting all the crappy assignments or failing tests that you know you have passed that racism becomes a much more serious problem." But another Muslim who served in the army, Nassir Khan, dismissed the idea that calling someone a "Paki" had anything to do with banter. "This is an incredibly insulting term, it's the sort of thing people from the National Front or Combat 18 say before attacking Asian families and I don't understand why, just because he is third in line to the throne and in the army, we are supposed to accept it." Khan, who served in the army from 1988 to 1999 before being forced to retire through injury, said he was regularly
subjected to verbal and physical attacks because of his background. "When I took the oath of allegiance the man said to me, here's the king's shilling for a cup of tea and a chapati, and although that might sound humorous it was just the start of the racism I experienced." He added that he had received death threats and had been physically attacked because of his background. "I was told by other soldiers when I was serving in the 1991 Gulf war that I was on the wrong side and to watch my back because they would shoot me if they got a chance.
Another ex-army officer also said that the whole thing had been blown out of proportion, although he said the phrase used by the prince was offensive. "Paki is a very, very rarely used term as far as I am concerned. It was naive of him to say what he said, and to film it, but it is difficult to extrapolate out of that that there is institutional racism in the army. I never used that language about any of my soldiers, I would never be that crass. Soldiers call each other manky bastard and things like that all the time, but not Paki, that's an unusual mistake." A senior NCO said he was sure the prince had not meant what he said in a derogatory manner. "I'm not sticking up for him - I am coming from the soldiers' angle here. The boys' reaction is the papers are making a lot out of not a lot.
"I got death threats through the post saying if I returned to work I would be killed and I was also badly beaten up by two Paras. None of this was banter - it was "I think Harry was very naive but pure racism, and when someone like Prince Harry is caught describing someone that sort of thing should be kept within the he works with as a Paki it convinces me army circle, though I am not saying that nothing much has changed." racism should be tolerated or that bullying Khan, who says his family has an should be in the army. You can tell by the tone of voice that he is not being racist. It's association with the British army dating just like somebody calling him ginger. It's back to the first world war, sued the MoD exactly the same. It wasn't meant to be for race discrimination and received an out racist. It wasn't nice but it wasn't meant to of court settlement in 2000. be offensive. That's just the way soldiers "I have children who are now are." talking about wanting to join, but after my He added: "I might call somebody experience there is no way I would let then a bent bastard and the guy might be a sign up to an institution that accepts that homosexual but I don't mean it like that. It level of racism or tries to dismiss what depends how it is said. If I went up to him Prince Harry says as banter." and jabbed him in the chest and said "you Other soldiers were more are a fucking bent bastard" then it would be sympathetic towards the prince, claiming using the term badly, but if I want to go up to people outside the army often failed to someone and say "come on you bent understand what life in the forces was like. bastard, get a move on" then that's quite a different thing." James Moulton, a former officer who served in Iraq with the Irish Guards He said all the serving soldiers he and now works as a security risk adviser in had spoken to believed the reaction to the Geneva, said: "It appears to have been prince's remarks had been way over the top. borderline banter which went slightly over "Within the armed forces, because the mark. I'm in no way saying racism is we are dealing with a lot emotionally acceptable but we have to remember he didn't say it in public. It was said to another seeing your friends killed, people losing soldier whom he knew very well and as far body parts - we take things more lightly and you can handle a bit of flak about where you as we know it was not found offensive by come from or what colour you are. The guy that person or anyone else around at the that Harry called a Paki wasn't crying or time." moaning about it. You don't know if he gave Moulton, 33, said it was important him much stick back and called him a posh to see the remark in context. ginger twat.” "People put up with nicknames and the like in the army - from Irish soldiers being called Paddy to the Welsh being called Taffy - and it is often in the context of fairly intense experiences and perhaps the banter sometimes reaches a level that would not be acceptable outside. But I can honestly say that the black and Asian soldiers I knew did not suffer because of their race or religion or whatever - you have to remember that when people join the army everyone of the same rank is seen as equal ... that is the bottom line."

Year to Date Domestic Passengers Through End of November 2008 Increase by 3.37%. The total number of Indonesian domestic air passengers for the period JanuaryNovember 2008 totaled 29.09 million, an increase of 3.37% over the same period in 2008 (28.14 million).
Reflecting a seasonal cycle, Bisnis.com reports that domestic air passengers in Indonesia for November 2008 totaled 2.59 million, a decrease of 7.95% when compared to the previous month. Downturns in the number of passengers were reported by all major airports across the nation, including
Surabaya (-13.37%), Bali (-11.05%), Medan (-10.15%), Makassar (6.36%) and Jakarta (-3.17%). The biggest contributor of November's domestic air passengers remains Jakarta with a 37.49% share (970,030) followed by Surabaya with a 11.39% share (294,900).
Vice Presidents Ends Bali Airport Debate Vice President Kalla Orders Expansion of Bali Airport Be Completed by 2011, Ending Debate on New Airport Proposed for Bali's North. Indonesia's Vice President Jusuf Kalla has apparently brought to an end the long-standing debate on the future of Bali's international airport by instructing that a Rp. 1.2 trillion (US$108 million) expansion must be completed by 2011. As reported by Bisnis Indonesia, the Vice President issued his instructions following an inspection visit to the airport over the Christmas/New Year period. He was accompanied on his visit by the Minister of Communications Jusman Syafii Djamal, the Minister of Culture and Tourism Jero Wacik, the governor of Bali Made Mangku Pastika, the Regent (Bupati) of Badung A.A. Gde Agung and the Director of Angkasa Pura I Bambang Darwoto. Declaring there was no
immediate need to extend the length of the current airport, Kalla directed that the current expansion of the Ngurah Rai Airport should be completed by 2011, declaring the expanded airport sufficient to meet Bali's transportation needs through 2020. Rejecting calls to make the current runway long enough to handle jumbo Airbus 380 aircraft, Vice President Kalla discounted the importance of creating an airport capable of handling the super-jumbo at the end of a 12 hour flight from the U.S. or Europe. According to Kalla, "the cost exceeds the benefit if we extend the length of the current runway to accommodate airplanes that handle 500 passengers." Bambang Darwoto of the airport management authority said the current 15,000 square meter domestic terminal would be moved to the larger 70,000 square meter international terminal. Darwoto also
said that the Vice President vetoed the idea of building a mall between the international and domestic terminals, saying the airport was not a transit facility but a destination airport. Other changes will see the international terminal moved to the space occupied by the current domestic terminal and expanded to 70,000 square meters. Also on tap for the improved airport is more apron space to accommodate more parked aircraft, a four floor parking facility, and a new control tower. In 2008 the Bali airport handled an estimated 5 million domestic and international passengers.

Bookings Strong Over Chinese New Years
Bali Expecting Many Visitors for Two Weeks from January 24 2009. Many Bali Hotels and Villas are reporting strong booking activity over the Chinese New Year Holidays coming in late January 2009. While the official celebration of Chinese New Year will be marked on Monday, January 26, 2009, the celebration of the changing of Chinese Zodiac stretches for fifteen days. The Year of the Ox The Chinese New Year that
is ushered in on January 26th will be the “Year of the Ox” just one animal in a 12 animal Chinese zodiac cycle used to designate the specific character one can expect from the year to come. Meanwhile, the year to which we bid farewell on January 26th will be the "Year of the Rat." We'll let you decide whether or not to place any credence in these animal associations, based on the kind of year you had over the past twelve months and what kind of year your expecting ahead. The Year of the Rat - The Rat, associated with the year now ending, is linked with aggression, wealth, charisma and orderliness. On the downside, the rodent can also bring death, war, black magic, plague and atrocities. The rat represents the first animal of the 12-animal zodiac cycle so those born in that year tend to be first as leaders, trend setters and even generals in battle. In keeping with their station in life, these "rat" people are charismatic, hard working, determined, passionate, and single-minded.
Since rats are alert, cowardly, quick, sly and ambitious - your “Year of the Rat” might have contained any of these characteristics. The Year of the Ox - The Ox, representing the year to come, bespeaks prosperity obtained through courage and hard work. Those born under this sign are leaders, dependable and often achieve great things in their lifetimes. They are also persistent and dogged in their determination trudging on until their goal is eventually achieved. “Ox” people tend to be quiet, kind, compassionate, logical and realistic. Like an old ox, these people are intelligent and determined; and not amenable to being pushed around by anyone. For the difficult financial year ahead, please remember that the Ox despises extravagance and always lives within his or her means. They do not like debt or credit cards, because they need a peaceful atmosphere without the worries of debt in order to do their best work.
Heavy Rains Bring Floods to Kuta-Legian-Seminyak Weekend Rains in Bali Cause Evacuations as Homes and Businesses are Submerged by Flood Waters of More than 1 Meter. Heavy rains covering much of Bali's southern regions that began on Saturday, January 10, 2009, have caused localized flooding in a number of areas, including Kuta, Legian and Seminyak. According to the Bali Post, several residential areas and up-markets commercial buildings were isolated and partially submerged by the flooding, with rubber boats used to evacuate local residents to higher ground. The worst flooding was in areas surrounding the Tukad Mati river which overflowed its banks, affecting Jalan Dewi Sri. Jalan Nakula, Jalan Kresna, Jalan Sri Rama and portions of Jalan Sunset Road. By mid-day on Sunday, January 11, 2009, flood waters of between 1-2.5 meters deep were still present in residential areas on Jalan
26
Dewi Sri Gang Campuhan and Banjar Legian Tengah. Evacuation efforts continued until Sunday afternoon, with many local residents complaining that rescue efforts were uncoordinated. A number of local homeowners remained stranded, while those evacuated were reportedly left to fend for themselves on open land near Jalan Sri Rama with little evidence of an organized relief effort for those left temporarily homeless by the floods. On Jalan Nakula the flooding invaded the basement of the Bali View Apartment. Left behind in the flooded basement were 7 cars and 10 motorcycles. In the same area, a local business, Toko Kawan, also saw its basement under water. The owner of the business took the wise precaution of disconnecting the power supply to prevent any possible short circuit. Fortunately, vehicles stored in the basement of Toko Kawan were moved before flood waters inundated the basement area of that building. Water levels of approximately 1
meter also surrounded the Village Chief's Office (Lurah) and the local LPM office, both in Legian. Flooding also affected much of the Jalan Sunset Road with water levels reportedly rising to knee-level. The waters were blamed for a large number of stalled cars and motorcycles along that busy roadway that runs past the Carrefour complex.

Woman left by staff to miscarry in hospital's public toilet TWO investigations have been launched after a distressed mother revealed how staff at a NSW hospital left her to miscarry and "dispose" of the 14-week-old fetus in a waiting room toilet. Fighting back tears, mother of two Jodie Whiteside said yesterday that staff were "blase" when she arrived at Maitland Hospital on December 20, and gave her no choice but to expel the fetus alone in a public ladies' room cubicle, and clean up the mess. Her treatment has been condemned as "an absolute disgrace" by maternity advocates. The state Opposition has also demanded to know why the hospital did not immediately transfer the haemorrhaging woman to the maternity unit -- as recommended by the 2007 investigation into a similar case. A tearful Ms Whiteside said: "All I know is I gave birth to the child, I had it in my hand, and I was given no other option. "I just didn't know what to do ... I put it in the toilet and I had what they call afterbirth everywhere, and I was thinking what poor woman wants
to come into the cubicle after me? "I tried to tidy it up a bit because it was just such a mess." Ms Whiteside's ordeal mirrors in ghastly detail the earlier case of Jana Horska, who miscarried her 14-weekold fetus in the waiting room toilet at Sydney's Royal North Shore Hospital in September 2007. That triggered a public outcry and resulted in a government promise that women with suspected miscarriage would be "accorded the dignity and support they need". The latest case has triggered investigations by the area health service and the Health Care Complaints Commission. Hunter New England Health chief executive Nigel Lyons said he had called the 30-year-old to apologise for what he described as a "very distressing" incident. "I am, as a doctor, really quite concerned about the care that's been provided," he said. "It's clear that she was very distressed and we haven't done what we needed to do as well as we should have. We have let her down in that regard." Ms Whiteside said she had rushed to Maitland Hospital after
leaking fluid and feeling what she believed to be the baby starting to emerge. An emergency department triage nurse told her there was nothing to be done, and directed her to the toilet. Although a bed was later found for her, at no point before, during or for some time after the miscarriage did any health worker express regret or concern -- the most sympathy coming from a doctor who said her loss was "too bad". Dr Lyons said while miscarriage was a common occurrence that could not be stopped once started, emotional support could still be offered and clearly hadn't been in Ms Whiteside's case. Justine Caines, national president of the Maternity Coalition, said Ms Whiteside's treatment was "an absolute disgrace" and women suffering miscarriage "should not be dealt with in accident and emergency". A spokesman for Health Minister John Della Bosca said Deputy Premier Carmel Tebbutt had indicated "how sorry she was" during a long phone conversation with the Whitesides.
Race to evacuate Australian tourists stranded by Fiji floods URGENT talks are under way between Australian officials and the major airlines to evacuate stranded tourists from floodravaged Fiji. Foreign Minister Stephen Smith said today he remained "very concerned" about the welfare of those affected by torrential rains in the region. The death toll from Fiji's severe storm has now reached seven, according to the Fiji National Emergency Operation Centre, and thousands of Fijians are taking cover in emergency shelters. While some Australians had been forced to spend the night at the airport, Mr Smith said it appeared the major problem was restricted road access to the airport rather than a lack of flights to evacuate stranded tourists.
“To date, the problem has been not flights in and out of the airport, it has been people getting access to the airport,” Mr Smith said. "I am advised that the road is in a better state."

Officials Intensify Rabies Vaccination Program for Bali Pets as New Case Proves Disease Has Spread to South Denpasar Despite mass efforts by officials to vaccinate pets and cull stray dogs, the threat of Rabies has now spread beyond the Ungasan peninsula area of South Bali as authorities have now confirmed the disease in a street dog captured in the Sesetan area of South Denpasar. As reported by NusaBali, the head of Animal Control (Dinas Peternakan) for Bali, Ida Bagus Ketut Alit, has confirmed that a sick dog captured near a veterinarian clinic in Sestan has tested positive for the potentially fatal disease. The findings were the results of clinical pathology tests carried out in Bandung, West Java on January 1, 2009. The latest finding
now demonstrates that the rabies virus have been confirmed in 7 separate tests from samples taken from Ungasan Village (South Kuta), Kedonganan Selatan (South Badung) and Sesetan (South Denpasar). Alit told the press that the latest results means that Denpasar must now officially be considered a rabies infected area. Free rabies vaccination will soon be available to all pet owners in the sub districts of Denpasar as official hold clinics, typically based at the banjar halls of each community. In response to the latest findings vaccination and capture programs were scheduled to get underway in South Denpasar beginning on Saturday, January 10, 2009. Authorities had already
conducted vaccination programs in the Panjer and Sesetan areas of Bali. Since the rabies epidemic was uncovered in Bali in December, nearly 800 street dogs have been captured and eliminated, while over 6,000 pet dogs have received vaccination.

How Hannah, 13, fought off a shark Syb Mundy, who saved his teenage cousin Hannah Mighall from the jaws of a shark, has shrugged off the tag of "hero". Mr Mundy, 33, said Hannah, 13, was the one who deserved accolades for her bravery. Mr Mundy was surfing with Hannah at Binalong Bay, near St Helens, in Tasmania's north-east, yesterday afternoon when a fivemetre great white latched onto her leg. The shark dragged her under the water twice before her cousin reached her on his surfboard and hit it on the head. Mr Mundy was still in a state of disbelief when he spoke at the St Helens District Hospital in Tasmania, describing graphically how a casual surf at Binalong Bay almost ended in tragedy. "We were just surfing and she was probably five or 10 metres out in front of me," he said. "The next thing I know she screamed and disappeared under the water. "She came up and was fighting the shark and hitting it and screaming: 'Help me, help me, help me.' We didn't see it coming. "It dragged her around a bit and then she went down and under again. I was really worried. There was blood all in the water. "It brought her up to the top again and I paddled over to her and tried to push it with the board and tried to hit it but I don't think it felt it really. It was a pretty big shark - a monster. "It would have had two goes at her. She's lucky she didn't lose her leg.
"Hannah kept a really good head on her - kept it together. "It grabbed her surfboard and dragged that under and she still had her leg rope on and it dragged her under again. "The shark started circling us and coming up underneath us and when it did that we stopped and turned to face it so we could push it out of the way or poke it in the eye or something. "She kept it together. There was blood everywhere and I didn't know whether it was going to try and bite her again. "Then a wave came along and I said 'No matter how weak you are, try and hang on. This wave is going to save our lives.' "And then we caught that wave to the beach, dragged her up on the beach and saw her leg had been mauled. "It was pretty deep, in behind her knee was deep. You could almost see the bone. It was pretty horrible really. "We were lucky the water was cold. It slowed her heart rate so when we pulled her out of the water the leg wasn't spurting blood everywhere. "There happened to be a doctor and a nurse on the beach. We got a leg rope ... and wrapped it around and then wrapped some towels around to try and slow the blood down. We got a mobile phone and rang the ambulance. "I just think it was meant to happen for a reason. I'm blessed. "She was on the beach and whingeing about the pain. I said: 'You should be laughing that you're alive, don't whinge about the pain.' "She's 13 years old. She made me very proud. She gave me the
strength to stay there with her in the water - when I saw the way she was fighting it off. "She was scared but she fought it off. She wasn't going to let it beat her. "I was really scared but the way she fought that shark off. What are you going to do, leave your relative to die? "I was stunned - I didn't know what to do. She was the one who pulled me through it. She's the hero. She's my hero. "She's going to be all right, but she's going to have a big scar and a story to tell. She's a very, very, very brave girl. "As for the shark, well they belong there, there's nothing you can do. It just did what it instinctively thought to do. "That's life. Hannah would say the same. She actually wants to be a marine biologist and this hasn't changed her mind. "When she came up I said: 'Try to get your leg rope off, try and get your leg rope off', and I was trying to look for the shark because it disappeared and all I could see was blood in the water. "The leg rope is about six foot [1.8 metres] long, but then it broke and she popped up and I said: 'Jump on my back.' "She jumped on my back and we started paddling to the beach and I said 'Don't let go, whatever you do don't let go.' " Mr Mundy said hitting the shark on the head "was like hitting a brick wall - it was that dense". "I didn't have a tape to measure it but it was huge. It was easily the length of a car. "It was just a monster.”
Canadian arrested smuggling drugs in forklift SYDNEY (AFP) A Canadian man has been charged with trying to smuggle more than two million dollars (1.4 million US) worth of cocaine into Australia inside a forklift from Mexico, police said Saturday. The 10-kilogram (22-pound) drug stash was found by Customs officers last month after a port facility X-ray revealed "anomalies" in the machine's battery unit. "Customs officers drilled into one of the forklift's 24 battery cells to
24
reveal a white powder, which tested positive for cocaine," the Australian Federal Police said in a statement. Officers tracked down the forklift's intended destination, and on Friday arrested a man in connection to the address. "The drugs seized as a result of this operation have an approximate street value of more than 2.45 million," said Tim Morris, the agency's assistant commissioner.
The 56-year-old Canadian faces life in prison or an 825,000 dollar fine if found guilty.

THE share market was nearly 2 per cent lower at noon following the tumble on Wall Street after the US unemployment rate shot to a 16-year high. At 12.00am (AEDT), the benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was down 1.81 per cent at 3668 while the broader All Ordinaries index was 1.9 per cent lower, shedding 70 points to 3616.4. Burrell Stockbroking associate Peter Wright said the rise in US unemployment to 7.2 per cent had hurt investor sentiment, even though the data for December had not been too bad. Trading volumes were well below average as investors remained reluctant to enter the market, he said. "Equity markets are taking a lot of convincing,'' Mr Wright said. "Volumes are unbelievably
low." Resource giant Rio Tinto led the market lower, falling $2.43, or 5.53 per cent, to $41.50. Rival miner and Australia's biggest company, BHP Billiton, fell 78 cents, or 2.46 per cent, to $30.92. Mr Wright said Rio had been hurt more than BHP because of the company's large debt burden, as looming annual contract negotiations with the Chinese steel mills threaten to deliver lower iron ore prices. US markets fell Friday after a labor report showing the worst annual job losses since World War II, raising alarms that the recession's worst was yet to come. In the US, the broad S&P500 index retreated 2.13 per cent and the tech-heavy Nasdaq shed 2.81 per cent to 1571.59. Australia's financial sector also declined. Westpac lost 21 cents to
$16.29, NAB decreased 44 cents to $20.56, Commonwealth Bank dropped 38 cents to $28.42 and ANZ lost 12 cents to $15.08. Mirrabooka Investments said first-half net profit fell by 36 per cent as the financial crisis dented the value of the assets the fund manager holds, although operating profit increased. Mirrabooka shares were untraded at a five-week high $1.40. Investment bank Babcock & Brown has asked for trading in its shares to be suspended, as it continues to await word from its bankers on a business plan to escape insolvency. Babcock shares last traded at 32.5 cents. On the Sydney Futures Exchange, the March share price index contract was 58 points lower at 3642 on a volume of 9814 contracts.
China closes 91 websites in online crackdown BEIJING (Reuters) - China has shut down 91 websites for pornographic and other "vulgar" content, as well as a political blog portal, since announcing its latest bid to ensure Internet morality, state media said on Monday. China's ruling Communist Party is wary of threats to its grip on information and has conducted numerous censorship efforts targeting pornography, political criticism and web scams, but officials flagged tougher steps this time "Ninety-one websites that included pornography and vulgar content had been closed down from January 8 to 10," the staterun web portal China
(www.china.com.cn) said. Bullog.cn, a Chinese blog portal with many famous bloggers, including some signatories of the pro-democracy "08 Charter," has been inaccessible since Friday. Luo Yonghao, the founder of Bullog.cn, confirmed on his own blog that the website had been
closed because of "amount of political harmful information," citing a notice from government. The "08 Charter," issued online with the names of 303 Chinese citizens, calls for freedom of expression and association and open elections. China's latest crackdown on Internet content targeted many big names, including Google, Microsoft's MSN and homegrown market-leading rival Baidu, for undermining public morality. None of the big names was on the list of 91.

WHEN David Warner walked out on to the MCG to bat last night, his anonymity was evident. The scoreboard operator's inability to find a picture to accompany his brief domestic career statistics. But it is unlikely that any of the 62,148 that stood as one to applaud his exit at 8.38pm, after a staggering innings of 89 runs from just 43 balls, will ever forget the dashing left-hander's remarkable Australian debut. That Australia defeated South Africa by 52 runs, despite another outstanding MCG effort from young Protea Jean-Paul Duminy, is a sideshow to Warner's phenomenal maiden international innings. The MCG has, by the nature of the events it hosts, been the scene of some of Australia's most memorable sporting moments. Where Warner's blazing innings ranks among the hundreds of stories is a matter of conjecture, particularly given this shortened variation of cricket is still in its infancy. But one thing is certain according to former Australia captain Mark Taylor. Warner's innings, which included seven fours and six massive sixes, is certain to inspire the next generation of fans. "It is the exhuberance of youth that allows you to play that way, so it is terrific to see," Taylor told The Australian. "I'm always astonished because I know for a fact that hitting blokes back over their heads at 140, 150km/h at the MCG is not that easy. "It was terrific to watch and the crowd loved it and that is exactly what is great about this form of the game." About 40 minutes before Warner, the first player picked for Australia without first-class experience since the 19th century, faced a ball, the 1980s Tears for Fears song Everybody Wants To
Rule The World rang around the stadium. After surviving a close runout attempt when opening with Shaun Marsh, Warner smacked the second ball he faced, from Makhaya Ntini, just over the head of the mid-on fieldsman for four. "It was almost as if he thought, 'Well, that is as bad as I'm going to hit them, wait until I hit a few in the middle'," Taylor said. While Warner is apparently adept at batting with both sides of his body, last night's assault was a left-handed demolition, with not one South African bowler spared the southpaw's king-hit. Ntini, who passed Malcolm Marshall on the all-time Test wicket-takers list in the Boxing Day Test, felt Warner's wrath in the third over of the night when blasted for consecutive sixes, the first a hoick off a good length over deep mid-wicket, the second a more conventional pull shot. Dale Steyn, the hero of the Boxing Day Test and arguably the world's best bowler, was not immune as Warner raced to the second-fastest 50, off 19 balls, in international Twenty20 competition. The South African looked on in amazement as Warner used Steyn's pace to steer a ball behind square into the stands. There was little fancy about the six off Steyn's next ball, just brutish strength as he clubbed a mid-track delivery about eight rows back into the crowd over mid-on. Not that Steyn should be ashamed, for Warner walloped a Jaques Kallis delivery even further back when he pulled a ball so high it seemed for a minute it might exit the stadium. Fanciful, perhaps, but it was that sort of innings. "It can't believe it. It's unreal," Warner told the Nine Network. "I went out there and
backed myself to do what I've been doing the last couple of weeks and it came off." At the other end captain Ricky Ponting, who made 21 from 19 balls, and David Hussey (19 off 12) played supporting roles. But even Australia's captain seemed in awe of Warner's innings, which ended when he holed out to AB de Villiers at deep mid-on off the bowling of Ntini. Ponting, who declared it was "some of the sweetest hitting I have seen", paid Warner a massive compliment when comparing him to Adam Gilchrist, who was at the MCG to witness the debut. "It was almost Gilchrist like," he said. "It was like Gilly being back at the top of the order again." Any hope the South Africans had of chasing Australia's total of 9182 evaporated in the first three overs thanks to a brilliant opening from a bowling attack containing not one of Australia's Test players. Nathan Bracken ended the comeback of Herschelle Gibbs, returning after disciplinary problems, with an inswinging yorker that captured the South African LBW for a duck in the first over. Shaun Tait signalled his return to the national team with a blistering third ball that saw de Villiers bizarrely dismissed hit wicket for a duck. The South African struck his off-stump with his bat while falling to the ground in pain after Tait's delivery deflected on to the front point of his right hip. It left the tourists floundering at 2-3. Duminy continued his MCG love affair in reaching 78 before losing his wicket LBW to David Hussey.

Ron Barassi welcomes bashing arrest A MAN has been charged and a 15-year-old girl questioned by police over the bashing of Australian football legend Ron Barassi on New Year's Eve. The attack occurred when the 72-year-old former footballer went to the aid of a woman who was being assaulted in Melbourne's St Kilda. Detective Sergeant Ed Logonder, of the St Kilda
police, said a 26-year-old man and the teenager, both from South Melbourne, were arrested yesterday. The man would be charged on two counts of assault and the girl was helping with inquiries, he said. "We still expect to speak to about four other persons." Barassi welcomed the news that there was a breakthrough in the case and said he hoped more arrests
would follow. Speaking after the arrest of the man, he said: "You tell me an arrest has been made, and that is great, but arrests with an 's' would be even better." Barassi, who won six VFL premierships as a player with Melbourne and four as a coach with Carlton and North Melbourne, is considered one of the all-time greats of the game. He suffered injuries to his face and ribs in the attack.
Geelong defender David Wojcinski ready to avenge his AFL grand final axing GEELONG defender David Wojcinski has pledged to fight back from his grand final heartbreak by playing his best football this season. Dumped after last year's preliminary final, the 28-year-old admits he was hurt and angry after his axing. Wojcinski said he was determined to channel that disappointment into a positive. "I was pretty angry I didn't get to play," he said. "I thought I played all right in the prelim, but it's their call. All I can do is go out there and play as good I can. I thought I did that. "It's over now. That was last year and I'm more than happy to be back at the club again this year and putting in a big pre-season.
if you could have helped the team or not. I don't know if I would have been the difference or anything, but you just never know. "I'm just really looking forward to the season starting, to play that first game and get it over and done with." Wojcinski is still recovering from an achilles injury that restricted to him to 14 games last season. He was the first Cat across the line in Saturday's Pier to Pub swim at Lorne and hopes to start running this week with the view to playing in Round 1.
His father, Charlie, had criticised the club during grand final week for leaving his son out. "It was just a big disappointment the whole day," Wojcinski said. "Myself missing out and then the boys missing out. It just wasn't a good day.
"I've had an amazing amount of people saying that I should have been in the side, but there are people who are in the job to make those "I missed pretty much half the year and decisions. battled through the second half of the year with that injury and that was a big "I still get people coming up to me part of the reason I missed the Grand now saying I was unlucky, but I say, Final," he said. 'oh well that was last year mate'." "It's still a little bit sore but, hopefully, in the next couple of weeks I can ramp it up and join in the skills."
"We've got such a good side and, hopefully, we can be up there again and really test every other team out there and win another premiership.
Wojcinski married on October 18 in Port Douglas, which proved a timely distraction.
"If anything I'm going to put (the hurt) towards going out there and playing some good footy this year.
"I got married over the holidays which took my mind off footy a lot. It came at the perfect time," he said.
"It's always going to hurt, missing out on a grand final. You never know

Bee Gees keep you Stayin' Alive The Bee Gees hit song Stayin' Alive might be more true to its name than the group ever could have guessed. At 103 beats per minute, the old disco song has almost the perfect rhythm to help jump-start a stopped heart. And in a small but intriguing study from the University of Illinois medical school, doctors and students maintained close to the ideal number of chest compressions doing cardiopulmonary resuscitation while listening to the catchy tune from the 1977 movie Saturday Night Fever. The American Heart Association recommends 100 chest compressions per minute, far more than most people realise, study author Dr David Matlock said yesterday. And while CPR can triple cardiac arrest survival rates when properly performed, many people hesitate to do it because they're not sure about keeping the proper rhythm, Matlock said. He found that Stayin' Alive, which has a way of getting stuck in your head, can help with that. His study involved 15 students and doctors and had two parts. First they did CPR on mannequins while listening to the song on iPods. They were asked to time chest compressions with the song's beat. Five weeks later, they did the
same drill without the music but were told to think of the song while doing compressions. The average number of compressions the first time was 109 per minute; the second time it was 113. That's more than recommended, but Matlock said that when it comes to trying to revive a stopped heart, a few extra compressions per minute is better than too few. "It drove them and motivated them to keep up the rate, which is the most important thing," he said. The study showed the song helped people who already know how to do CPR, and the results were promising enough to warrant larger, more definitive studies with real patients or untrained people, Matlock said. He plans to present his findings at an American College of Emergency Physicians meeting in Chicago this month. The American Heart Association has been using the song as a training tip for CPR instructors for about two years. They learned of it from a physician "who sort of hit upon this as a training tool", said association spokesman Dr Vinay Nadkarni of the University of Pennsylvania. He said he was not aware of
any previous studies that tested the song. But Nadkarni said he has seen Stayin' Alive work wonders in classes where students were having trouble keeping the right beat while practicing on mannequins. When he turned on the song, "all of a sudden, within just a few seconds, they get it right on the dot". "I don't know how the Bee Gees knew this," Nadkarni said. "They probably didn't. But they just hit upon this natural rhythm that was very catchy, very popular, that helps us do the right thing." Dr Matthew Gilbert, a 28-yearold medical resident, was among participants in the University of Illinois study this past northern hemisphere spring. Since then, he said, he has revived real patients by keeping the song in his head while doing CPR. Gilbert said he was surprised the song worked as well as it did. "I was a little worried because I've been told that I have a complete lack of rhythm," he said. Also, Gilbert said he's not really a disco fan. He does happen to like a certain Queen song with a similar beat. "I heard a rumour that Another One Bites the Dust works also, but it didn't seem quite as appropriate," Gilbert said.

Cricket turning into baseball - say it ain't so THIS was batting, but not as we know it, even in a game that isn't cricket as we know it. In the space of 43 breathtaking deliveries, yielding 89 runs, wunderkind David Warner redefined power-hitting at the MCG on Sunday night.

Balls were landing on roofs, car alarms were going off, people walking to the shops were getting injured. They had to chase balls down the road almost to the beach." Warner is a short player, standing at just 171 centimetres, but his size has proved an asset in the short game, for it narrows the width a bowler has for a legal delivery. His brother Steve, who plays in the seconds at the same Sydney club, said that many important lessons were learnt in the backyard. "There's seven years' difference between him and me and I never held back bowling at him in the backyard I always bowled bouncers at him and he would always smoke me over the fence. He loved it. We have gone through plenty of balls, don't worry about that. Half the neighbourhood has our tennis balls on their roofs." Warner bats and bowls either left or right-handed. This was one reason he was chosen by a bat company to use the novel doublesided bat. "Not everybody can do what David can do but it will open the door for other young players to experiment and to go to the nets and say, well how am I going to hit this ball on a good length over mid-wicket," Campbell said.

A woman meets a man in a bar. They talk; they connect; they end up leaving together. They get back to his place, and as he shows her around his apartment.
“Father” never lie This one is quite good ... A distinguished young woman on a flight from Ireland asked the Priest beside her, 'Father, may I ask a favour?' 'Of course, child. What may I do for you?' 'Well, I bought an expensive woman's electronic hair dryer for my mother's birthday that is unopened and well over the Customs limits, and I'm afraid they'll confiscate it. Is there any way you could carry it through customs for me? Under your robes perhaps?' 'I would love to help you, dear, but I must warn you: I will not lie.' 'With your honest face, Father, no one will question you.' When they got to Customs, she let the priest go ahead of her. The official asked, 'Father, do you have anything to declare?' 'From the top of my head down to my waist, I have nothing to declare.' The official thought this answer strange, so asked, 'And what do you have to declare from your waist to the floor?' 'I have a marvellous instrument designed to be used on a woman, but which is, to date, unused.' Roaring with laughter, the official said, 'Go ahead, Father. Next!'

There are three shelves in the bedroom, with hundreds and hundreds of cute, cuddly teddy bears carefully placed in rows, covering the entire wall! It was obvious that he had taken quite some time to lovingly arrange them and she was immediately touched by the amount of thought he had put into organizing the display. There were small bears all along the bottom shelf, medium-sized bears covering the length of the middle shelf, and huge, enormous b ears running all the way along the top shelf. She found it strange for an obviously masculine guy to have such a large collection of Teddy Bears, She is quite impressed by his sensitive side. but doesn't mention this to him. They share a bottle of wine and continue talking and, after awhile, she finds herself thinking, "Oh my God! Maybe, this guy could be the one! Maybe he could be the future father of my children?" She turns to him and kisses him lightly on the lips. He responds warmly. They continue to kiss, the passion builds, and he romantically lifts her in his arms and carries her into his bedroom where they rip off each other's clothes and make hot, steamy love. She is so overwhelmed that she responds with more passion, more creativity, more heat than she has ever known. After an intense, explosive night of raw passion with this sensitive guy, they are lying there together in the afterglow. The woman rolls over, gently strokes his chest and asks coyly, "Well, how was it?" The guy gently smiles at her, strokes her cheek, looks deeply into her eyes, and says: "Help yourself to any prizefrom the middle shelf.”
