July 2009 Dear Editor, Once again the City of Staunton has issued a Water Quality Report stating that fluoridated water is safe to drink. The report also claims that fluoride is a “Water additive which promotes strong teeth.” A growing list of legal, medical, dental, scientific and environmental professionals have challenged the validity of these two statements and are calling for an end of fluoridation. Their reasoning is succinctly explained in the DVD “Professional Perspectives on Water Fluoridation.” It is now available for viewing on line at http://www.fluoridealert.org/ Staunton fluoridates because the Virginia State Board of Health’s July 18, 2008 Policy Statement says “…water fluoridation benefits everyone…proven safe and effective…endorsed by numerous…” etc. These are all statements promulgated by the American Dental Association and their followers. No mention of toxicity to infants, diabetics, those with kidney disorders, the elderly or consumers of large amounts of water such as athletes and laborers. No mention of the one percent of individuals that are expected to have dermatologic, gastro-intestinal and neurological reactions to fluoride with symptoms such as eczema, atopic dermatitis, urticaria, epigastric distress, emesis and headache. http://www.slweb.org/feltman-kosel.1961.html And finally, no mention of fluoride’s known mechanisms of action that are related to the development of cancer. http://www.pdfcoke.com/doc/16887647/Fluoridation-andCancer-John-Lee-MD
A prime example of why Christopher Bryson titled his book “The Fluoride Deception” is now playing out here in Virginia. In 1980 the Virginia Department of Health asked their toxicologist Dr. Brian Dementi to review the available literature relating to the health effects of fluoride. His report “Fluoride in Drinking Water” presented studies showing evidence of fluoride inhibiting the immune system and promoting tumor growth. He reported that many may experience symptoms such as skin eruptions, eczema, gastric distress, headache, weakness, etc. and have no idea that fluoride in the drinking water may be the cause. He concluded, in part “With regard to fluoridation, this writer is of the opinion that the evidence of adverse health effects is of such magnitude…that it is inappropriate to say that fluoridation is a totally healthful and safe practice for all.” Incredibly, the Virginia Department of Health has no record of Brian Dementi or his work. His “missing” document has been found and can be read at
