Messenger The monthly news of Seminole Heights United Methodist Church

June 2009

Words from your Pastor: Worship at Seminole Heights certainly garners folks attention nowadays. Maybe I’ve stirred up a hornet’s nest, but I earnestly and prayerfully sought God’s directions in these matters and landed with my recommendations about our congregation ALL worshipping together in one, blended pattern as we celebrate God’s presence and power among us at SHUMC. However, it appears, like most of the church experts advised,‖ a blended worship only makes everyone upset—pleasing no one!‖ I designed a survey, using the online survey-building software—SurveyMonkey—to collect thoughts and ideas from our congregation. While we have to date (June 1) received only 14 responses (probably not enough to really gauge people’s corporate ―feelings about worship‖), the ones that we have are definitely split—either for ―traditional‖ worship with organ and anthems and hymns and preaching or for ―contemporary‖ worship with praise music, dramas, ,artistic displays, children’s stories, and less emphasis on sermons. For what it is worth, from this pastor’s perspective: ―traditional‖ means worship from the 1900’s and ―contemporary‖ means what I would label a ―soft rock‖ style—rather than full-blown, culturally relevant praise and media focused worship. Where do we go?—to God of course! Let me invite all of us to seek God’s wisdom and direction for our worship patterns here at our church. I will as well. Let’s see where God wants us to go. For the summer, we will continue our blended pattern with one time of worship. Our attendance for one service is comparable to attendance in both services over the past two years and Sunday School attendance (so far) is up each week from the past two years. As approved by our Church Council, our current plan is to have a mid course evaluation late in the summer and determine our worship pattern for starting in September or October. Please take this matter to God in your prayers. Speaking of the Summer, I plan on preaching a ―Summer Sermon Series‖ on King David from 1st & 2nd Samuel and 1st Kings. This summer the three-year cycle of bible readings used in worship (the Lectionary) has continuous Old Testament readings on these David stories and I will be following them beginning on Sunday, June 14. I hope you will read or re-read the stories of David in your worship preparation for the summer.

The Clothes Closet is now on its summer hiatus, and during this time we request

that you not bring items to the church intended for the Clothes Closet since we do not have adequate space to store them. You may resume bringing items in on July 26. All types of clothing are accepted, but there is always a great need for men’s and children’s clothing. In addition to clothing the Clothes Closet accepts household items such as towels, sheets and blankets, curtains, kitchen wares, clothing accessories such as belts, handbags, shoes and socks, eyeglasses and cases, etc. Look for the dark blue storage bin that will be outside Allen Hall beginning on July 26. CALLING ALL WOMEN AND TEENS OF THE CHURCH: Did you know the idea of a potluck dinner comes from the Native American tradition? Everyone brings their favorite dish to share, as well as stories to share or hear. Through these stories we share our faith and beliefs. UM Women would like to invite all the women of the church to attend a POTLUCK LUNCH and program on Sunday, June 7 in Allen Hall just after church at 11:30 am. Each person should try to bring a dish related to their own heritage and culture. Try to also bring a recipe card with your dish.

From Your Education Committee: HAVE YOU EVER DONE THIS?  Thought about teaching Sunday School, but unsure of how to do it?  Tried to teach Sunday School in the past, but couldn’t figure out how to organize the materials?  Gave up on teaching teenagers because you felt they were out of control and you couldn’t discipline them or speak their language?  Gave up on teaching small children because you aren’t a ―crafty‖ person, and they couldn’t read, and you didn’t feel sure about how to keep them engaged in the lessons? WELL, THIS IS FOR YOU! Sign on for Teacher Training Now! Let us schedule you for a training class SOON. Let us assure you that you will never be asked to face a class alone – there will always be another trained person in the class with you (that’s our policy!). Get classroom instruction from real educators, from experienced leaders, and from on-the-job opportunities as an assistant teacher while you learn. Call on these persons now to express your interest in answering God’s call to help our next generation of young people to learn about the Bible, Christian living, and Methodist heritage. Be sure to let them know your preference of days and times for training: Jill Kinney – Chair, Educ. Committee (retired Teacher, 40 yrs.) Help me celebrate a birthday milestone by helping Metropolitan Ministries

I have recently celebrated the 31st anniversary of my 39th birthday! I had thought I would invite all of you to help me celebrate my 100th birthday someday. Because I know many of you won’t be around for my 100th and because of these uncertain economic times, I’ve decided, instead of a party, to ask each of you to observe my 70th birthday milestone by bringing 2 or 3 non-perishable food items for our church’s food collection containers for Metropolitan Ministries. (There’s a barrel located just outside Allen Hall and a red tub on the second floor by the church office.) God bless you! Thank you! --Jill Kinney

We plan for this to become a monthly event, held the first Sunday of each month.

Please keep our youth in your prayers that they may enjoy a safe summer, in whatever activities and adventures they undertake.

containing a check off list of our active attenders. Unless you have a prayer request or other information to share with the office you no longer need to fill out a ―Let’s Connect‖ card. Those cards will still be available in the holders for those times when you have special information to share with us. If you don’t find your name on the clipboard list, please sign on a blank line and put a star next to it, and we will add your name, alphabetically, to the list of attenders.
