Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

Words from our Pastor Our Wednesday night Pastor’s Study starts up again in mid-September and I have been exploring where we might go. I had proposed that we look at the Book of James. But then I learned that James was part of the Adult Bible Studies, shared by some of our adult Sunday School Classes. Instead, God led me to a brand new resource, just published this month of September, called Seeing Gray in a World of Black and White, written by Adam Hamilton, pastor of the 14,000-member United Methodist Church of the Resurrection in Leawood, Kansas. We will have a 15 minute teaching video by Rev. Hamilton each week preceding our teaching time. I have written about this study in further detail in my new blog (www.shumc.org) and offer links where you can order the book if you choose to do so. You will not need the book for our 5-weeks together. Our Pastor’s Study will start on Wednesday, September 17th, and will be held in the chapel 6:45--7:30 pm. [NOTE: this is an earlier start & finish time than last year.]
Bazaar Buzzings Join us at 9 am Thursday, September 11 at Jayne Braddy’s house to work on bazaar projects. This week we’ll be making binkies, Santa napkin rings, tassels, and an ornament or two. If you’re working on a project, bring it along and enjoy the fellowship.
Our church will be blessed to have the Wilmingham Concert Choir of 40+ members performing for us during both services on November 16th. We need volunteers willing to house adult choir members for two nights. If you are willing to house one or more choir members please contact Diane Chadwick at 236-2273. If you’re unable to house choir members but are willing to assist with the preparation of group meals for the choir, please let Diane know.
Our church will soon be receiving a centennial oak tree to be planted in commemoration for the 100 years of serving children in the FL. Conf. UM Children’s Home. Trees were planted about 5 years ago by the children at the Home as a gift to each church in Florida. Watch for more news about a planting ceremony and dedication of our tree. If anyone in the church is an arborist or tree expert, let Jill Kinney or Ken Brown know since we will need that kind of assistance to properly plant the tree. T. J. Tompkins will be driving his truck to pick up the tree, so if you would like to ride along with him just let him know. Pioneer Club on Wednesday evenings is now up and running with the program beginning at 6:45 and ending at 8:30 pm. It’s not too late to register your children. The registration fee is $15, and shirts are $10.25 for kid sizes S,M,L; and $11.25 for adult sizes. This year we have added “Scooters,” for pre-k children (4 year olds). Contact Christine Messer at 232-8231 for further information or questions. Rehearsals for our Christmas cantata “And Glory Shone Around” have begun, but it isn’t too late for you to join us. We meet in the choir room (on the sanctuary level) at 7:30 each Thursday evening. If you have questions, please see Judy. Please note that the deadline for submitting articles for the October newsletter is September 15. Matthew 7:6-14 A SIMPLE GUIDE FOR BEHAVIOR
7 "Don't be flip with the sacred. Banter and silliness 6
give no honor to God. Don't reduce holy mysteries to slogans. In trying to be relevant, you're only being cute and inviting sacrilege. 7-11
"Don't bargain with God. Be direct. Ask for what you need. This isn't a cat-and-mouse, hide-and-seek game we're in. If your child asks for bread, do you trick him with sawdust? If he asks for fish, do you scare him with a live snake on his plate? As bad as you are, you wouldn't think of such a thing. You're at least decent to your own children. So don't you think the God who conceived you in love will be even better? 12
"Here is a simple, rule-of-thumb guide for behavior: Ask yourself what you want people to do for you, then grab the initiative and do it for them. Add up God's Law and Prophets and this is what you get.
BEING AND DOING 13-14
"Don't look for shortcuts to God. The market is flooded with surefire, easygoing formulas for a successful life that can be practiced in your spare time. Don't fall for that stuff, even though crowds of people do. The way to life—to God!—is vigorous and requires total attention.
Men’s Bible Study Fellowship International will kick off their new season here at Seminole Heights UMC tomorrow evening at 6:55 p.m. They will meet every Monday evening (except for holidays and break times) until next May. This season’s study will be on the life of Moses. Everyone meets at 6:55 in the sanctuary, and for the first two weeks there will be an introductory class for new-comers after the men disperse to their small groups. If you would like to experience the fellowship and intense study of the scriptures please join them tomorrow evening.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING FOR THE SEASON AFTER PENTECOST The Lord be with you.
And also with you. Lift up your hearts.
We lift them up to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give our thanks and praise. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Almighty God, creator of heaven and earth. You formed us in your image and breathed into us the breath of life. When we turned away, and our love failed, your love remained steadfast. You delivered us from captivity, made covenant to be our sovereign God, and spoke to us through your prophets, who looked for that day when justice shall roll down like waters and righteousness like an everflowing stream, when nation shall not lift up sword against nation, neither shall they learn war anymore. And so, with your people on earth and all the company of heaven we praise your name and join their unending hymn:
Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Holy are you, and blessed is your Son Jesus Christ. Your Spirit anointed him to preach good news to the poor, to proclaim release to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, and to announce that the time had come when you would save your people. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, and ate with sinners. By the baptism of his suffering, death, and resurrection you gave birth to your Church, delivered us from slavery to sin and death, and made with us a new covenant by water and the Spirit. At his ascension you exalted him to sit and reign with you at your right hand.
On the night in which he gave himself up for us, he took bread, gave thanks to you, broke the bread, gave it to his disciples, and said: "Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me." When the supper was over he took the cup, gave thanks to you, gave it to his disciples, and said: "Drink from this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, poured out for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me." And so, in remembrance of these your mighty acts in Jesus Christ, we offer ourselves in praise and thanksgiving as a holy and living sacrifice, in union with Christ's offering for us, as we proclaim the mystery of faith.
Christ has died; Christ is risen; Christ will come again. Pour out your Holy Spirit on us gathered here,. and on these gifts of bread and wine. Make them be for us the body and blood of Christ, that we may be for the world the body of Christ, redeemed by his blood. By your Spirit make us one with Christ, one with each other, and one in ministry to all the world, until Christ comes in final victory, and we feast at his heavenly banquet. Through your Son Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit in your holy Church, all honor and glory is yours, almighty God , now and for ever.
Amen.
