見える is used to say that something looks like something else. When something actually looked or looks a certain way, use “noun に見えました”*. When something looks like something else, even though you know that isn’t the case, use “noun のように見えます”. 例: 先生ですか。学生に見えました。 その楽器はギターのように見えます。
Is that a teacher? He looked like a student. That instrument looks like a guitar.
