BSN retains title in women’s badminton CBA reigns supreme in men’s division

By John Alexander M. Cuyoca

The College of Nursing brought glory to their college after retaining its defending championship in women’s division while the College of Business and Accountancy reigned supreme in the men’s division in the Badminton Finals today at the College Covered Court. BSN had a close fight against CBA where the championship matches for both men and women divisions went between the two of them. This is the fourth year of the BSN to win the title for the women’s division. On the other hand, after reigning as champion in men’s division for three years, the BSN lost its chance to retain its title for this year’s championship.

Women’s Singles Joyce Solinap of the College of Nursing corralled her infamous temper to overpower the supremacy of Bianca Torrejon of the College of Business and Accountancy, 21-10; 21-81, to clinch the championship title in the 2008 USLS Sportsfest Badminton Women’s Singles Finals today. Despite committing three unforced errors in the second set, Solinap remained extreme against Torrejon creating a big sensation for her powerful smashes that paved the way for her sweet victory. In the early stages of the opening game, Solinap looked little rusty but as the game becomes nerdwracking; her rhythm went on the pocket game where

she used her strength and strategy as her ace to win. Men’s Singles The crowds jumped off their seats as the an eye for an eye and tooth for a tooth battle between the finest has finally ended where Philippe Jan dela Cruz of the College of Business and Accountancy ruled the dominance of Paul Ematong of the College of Nursing, 21-14, 9-21, 21-13, to wrap up the championship title in the Men’s Singles Finals held today. Dela Cruz , who had upsetted Ematong, began with a flourish and took a 10-4 lead with array of jump smashes in the first set.

With dela Cruz winning the first set, Ematong recovered from a five-point deficit, 2-7, and from then on he felt confident of pulling it and winning the second set. But when dela Cruz got his rhythm, he slowed down the pace and took control of the tie, 8-8, registering a facile of six great smashes that led advance for his score. Women’s Doubles Melnette Guarino and Rochelle Bantiling of the College of Business and Accountancy smashed the brief resistance of Leslie Somes and Christia Cabrera of the College of Nursing, 21-18, 21-17, to seal the championship title Women’s Doubles Finals held today. Guarino and Bantiling

put up a brave fight before bowing out 16-11, where they have to fight nail and tooth to come from a game behind to win the first set. Taking the first game after advancing 3 points, the second game saw Somes and Cabrera slowing down the pace, which results for them to commit several smashing errors which led to glorious triumph of their opponents. Men’s Doubles Dong Min Kim and Cesar Raymundo of the College of Business and Accountancy proved that they were heads and shoulders above their challengers when they snatched the championship title

against Francis Nava and Jon Jardiilon of the College of Nursing, 21-11, 9-21, 21-31, in the Men’s Doubles Finals held today. Nava and Jardiolin struggled in the first set but they regained their vigor in the second set by striking several jump smashes against their opponents to quickly recover and advance to the third set. During the pulsating third set, Kim started the match on a scratching note losing his first smash in the tournament but as the game continues, team CBA showed-off their unpredictable strategies to end up the match and clinch the title.

CBA emerges as new lawn tennis champs By Randell T. Aranza

College of Business and Accountancy outlasted defending champions ENG’G (Men) and BSN (Women) in Lawn Tennis Championship Match, 2-0, 2-1, respectively, at the USLS Lawn Tennis Court today. In the men’s division, CBA won in Game 9 against EDUC, 2-1, as the mighty yellow finally received the mostawaited golden ticket to the championship round. BSN topped in Game

10 versus CAS, 2-1, but both failed to enter the championships. Meanwhile, the women of the College of Nursing also grabbed a slot in the finals after they defeated the College of Education in Game 9, 2-0. Game 10 went to CAS with a 0-2 win against ENG’G. Finally, the moment has come for the contenders to battle it out and to raise their respective flags in the game. The men’s championship round was a great turnout for CBA as

they grabbed the crown from the ENG’G, 6-4, 6-1, closing the match to 2-0. Victorino Mananes of ENG’G poorly executed some of his shots in the second set against Patrick Aquino of CBA, finishing the game with a shocking double fault. “It’s a game. Somebody win, somebody lose… Congratulations to CBA,” said Mananes of ENG’G, humbly accepting defeat. In the women’s championship match,

BSN’s Karmele Portillano started with a smooth serve against CBA’s John Bentula, but failed to show smooth tactics for the rest of the first set with 3-6, in favor of CBA. Moreover, Lee Algara of CBA failed to bring home victory in the

second set, 6-3, leading to a tiebreaker doubles match finally snatched by the mighty yellow, 6-10. Overall, EDUC ranked fifth in both men’s (W-0, L-4) and women’s (W-0, L-4) race; CAS, fourth in men’s (W-1, L-3) and

third in women’s (W-2, L-2); BSN, third in men’s (W-2, L-2) and second in women’s (W-3, L-1); ENG’G second in men’s (W-3, L-1) and fourth in women (W-1, L-3); CBA, champion both in men’s (W-4, L-0) and women’s (W-4, L-0).

Varsity player questioned for playing his varsity sport By Epi Ma. Kassandra A. Dajao

The College of Business and Accountancy’s victory over the College of Arts and Sciences in men’s basketball was forfeited due to illegal participation of one player in the last remaining seconds of Game 2 last Jan. 21 at the USLS Coliseum. Sammy Fernandez is a varsity player of the University last semester but stopped due to conflicts in his grades thus disobeying the rule of the Sportsfest. “No varsity player of the current school year is allowed to play for the Sportsfest in his own varsity sport. A varsity player could only play for his/ her varsity sports event in the Sportsfest if he or she would stop for two to three years as a varsity player,” Varsity Assistant Director and Chairman of Sportsfest 2008 Technical Committee Malot Lozada explained. Moreover, according to the Revised General Guidelines of the college Sportsfest, fielding of an ineligible player shall be penalized by forfeiture. Lozada said that they would give proper sanction to Fernandez after violating the rule of the varsity team. “As a moderator it is our responsibility to give him internal sanctions so he must face the consequence of his action,” Lozada said. Lozada added that Fernandez might cause friction among different colleges and that they don’t want to happen. CAS Sports Moderator Mike Antones said that they will write a formal complaint against the CBA player. On the other hand, CBA Vice- Governor Jeremiah Chui said that they are also innocent of that matter. “If we just knew it beforehand that he [Fernandez] would play for CBA, we might have prohibited him to join. However, it is really beyond our knowledge,” Chui said. Varsity Assistant Sports Director said that Fernandez’s scholarship and membership in men’s basketball varsity is questionable after his offense. *As of press time, The Spectrum failed to get the side of the player concerned.
