Artians retain cheering crown By Aries D. Cariño

College of Arts and Sciences retained its title as the defending champion of this year’s Cheering Competition held during the Opening Ceremony of Sportsfest 2008 at the Coliseum this morning. The College of Engineering came to a close fight winning the first runner-up trophy while the College of Education took the second runner up slot followed by the College of Nursing and the College of Business and Accountancy as the third and fourth runners-up, respectively. CAS also won Best in Choreography while the EDUC took home the Best Bleacher Performance. “We are pressured. But we changed our strategy. We focused more on choreography, gimmicks and not following the traditional cheering routine. Even if we do away with the Artian trademark, we proved that whatever genre and style of cheerleading, we can do it,” said Artian choreographer Rodney Escalon.

The 30 female and 28 male floor dancers’ gimmicks were observed in the drum dance portion with “boys versus girls theme” as the girls showed their wild side by having a more superior and aggressive dance steps while the boys showed their naughty side with a smiley print on pink shorts. Each dancer was also seen hugging his/her stuffed toy and gave red roses to the audience during their entrance preparation. Asked how unique this year’s performance compared to the previous years, Ascalon said: Every year is a special year. Every year is for that year only. You do not see it [the same choreography] from the previous years. The performance and routine are also more relaxed. We also tried different kinds of genres from salsa, African, krumping to old school hip-hop. The bleacher cheering was choreographed by Alexander Ascalon and David Dadivas while the drum beat was lead by Niel Colango.

The Artian Squad made an impressive start for this year’s SportsFest emerging as champion in the Cheering Competition. Colleges of Engineering, Education, Nursing, and Business & Accountancy grabbed the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th runners-up respectively.

Men’s Volleyball The brave nurses made a landslide as they nip the green CAS, 25-4; 25-17, to grab their first victory in this year’s men’s volleyball at the College Covered Court this afternoon. In the absence of John Cabaog, the coach of the College of Arts and Sciences, the greenblooded Artians continued to fight back and tried to elevate its score, but to no avail. The first timeout marked a score of 1-10, leaving CAS in a pressured state. On Game 2 of the event, the Orange Warriors fashioned-out a near-perfect-game to nip the Blue EDUC, 5-1, to place their first victory in their hands. A little shower made the game difficult but it was as if the Engineering never noticed it and

managed to slip three goals during the first half and one extra point on which one of the EDUC booters accidentally goaled on the opponent’s side. The second half went pretty well and the EDUC finally had a chance to get passed through the Engineering’s defense to score its only goal. Engineering team is expected to match up against CAS tomorrow at 3:00 pm.

One La Salle Through Sports: Preparations and Expectations To promote unison among the five colleges and at the same time to promote the One La Salle Advocacy. These are the main objectives of this year’s Sportsfest 2008 theme “One La Salle through Sports” said University Student Government President Amy Garce Gargar. “Even if we belong to other colleges, we are into one goal of obtaining the highest level of sportsmanship,” said Gargar. The tagline was proposed by Sportsfest 2008 Opening Ceremony Director Edu Pillora. Technical Committee Head Malot Lozada Preparation: Preparation is like the UNIGames. You could not see this kind of sports preparation in other schools. Before the games, the rules and eligibility were already presented so there will be no questions. The goal is to win the games in playing not in protest. Expectation: With the entry of under trainees in major ball games, the level and quality of tournament playing will be higher. USG President Amy Grace Gargar Preparation: This time, the Sportsfest Fee increased from P20 to P50. Therefore the budget sharing for each college is high. The preparation started last year from cheering rehearsals and sports practices of the students. The USG also prepared for the opening ceremony, schedule of sports activities and installation of banderitas for a festive mood. Expectation: It started better, it will end best. This year, you can’t pin point who will make it to the top because of the improvements shown by the colleges. This year is unpredictable. ENG’G Governor Sheldon Lim Preparation: We provided needs for the athletes and we tried our very best to be there during their practices to also provide moral support. The faculty also supported the athletes and participants by giving them tips and suggestions regarding their respective competitions. Expectation: I expect everyone to do their very best and finish well. I hope that no one would get hurt and just have fun during their competitions. I want to see the unity between the different colleges to grow more. BSN Governor John Mikkel Balodio Preparation: The College started to prepare as early as October from sponsorships to daily practices on cheering and sports events. Our main concern was money. It’s hard to look for finances for a lot of students. Expectation: We want to get the over-all championship title and also an experience of a strong bonding among the Nursing students, better faculty participation and a fun week for all student nurses. EDUC Governor Jomeo Sumalapao Preparation: We first planned out the student’s participation for the Sporstfest. Then we encouraged them to join all the activities and we did an all-out practices and rehearsals. The faculty also helped us in checking their attendances and undergoing try-outs and auditions. Expectation: Students enjoy their various sports events. Sportsfest is not just winning but doing all your best to give honor to your respective college. I hope this year’s Sportsfest will be more exciting and more fun.

CAS Governor Adrian Bobe Preparation: The College of Arts and Sciences started to prepare for the University Sportsfest last two months. Our athletes had undergone various trainings. The Artians Cheering Squad had a separate training gymnastics and choreography. In sports, our goal is that none of our players will be left behind versus the other colleges. Expectation: Hopefully, CAS will elevate in this year’s Sportsfest compared to being the 4th placer last year. CBA Vice Governor Jeremiah Chui Preparation: We made sure that the resources are maximized. Students are empowered to be part of the event and the various preparations. We encouraged the different clubs of the college to mobilize so that the goals will be achieved. We started preparing for the Sportsfest long before the 1st semester started. Expectation: Holding the Sportsfest Championship trophy, the College of Business and Accountancy hopes to raise their yellow banner.

CBA, BSN booters grab first victory in women’s IX By Allen Gabriel M. Iñigo

Despite the muddy display of slips and turns, the CBA and BSN managed to snatch their first victory today in the football women’s competition held at the USLS football field. It was an unfortunate start for the Orange Engineering Warriors as they get tangled up with the defending champion CBA who overthrew them out of the field without gaining a single point against the strong four point of the yellow team. “We prepared well for this year’s event and I’m glad that the new players got to cope up with the old ones,” CBA Coach Arnie Pasinabo said. On the other side of the field, a sweet display of massive offense was highlighted by the blazing red BSN against the never-say-die EDUC, 4-0, to slip their first win in their pockets. “We were just testing the combinations to find out the best set-up and I guess it worked pretty well on today’s game,” BSN Coach Larry Litonjua stated. The CBA and BSN are expected to match up in tomorrow’s game at around 1:30 pm. “We can give them a good fight. We’ve seen them play and I think we can form a good kind of defense against them. Still, it depends on the situation tomorrow,” Litonjua said.
