Social Entrepreneurship is an emerging field that offers opportunity to young professionals to create societal/economic value on a sustainable basis
A social entrepreneur is someone who recognizes a social problem and uses entrepreneurial principles to organize, create, and manage a venture to make social change.
In a country like India, where barely 6-7% of the economically active work-force is in the 'organized sector‘.
There is a dire need to divert the managerial talent to develop ventures which can add/create value to the rest of the 'informal sector‘
About the Product The Jaipur leg also known as Jaipur Footis a rubber-based prosthetic leg for people with below-knee amputations produced under guidance of Dr. P. K . Sethi, Masterji Ram Chander in 1969 for victims of landmine explosions. Designed in, and named for Jaipur, the prosthetic leg was designed To be inexpensive, Quick to fit and manufacture, To be water-resistant It costs approximately U.S. $40,and probably the cheapest prosthetic limb in the world.
The inventors Pramod Karan Sethi was an orthopedic surgeon. With Ram Chandra Sharma, he co-invented the "Jaipur foot, an inexpensive and flexible artificial foot, in 1969. Ram Chandra Sharma, an illiterate craftsman, is the co-inventor of the foot. The original idea of the Jaipur foot is supposed to have come to him serendipitiously while he was riding a bicycle and had a flat tire
The need Over ten million people suffer from loco-motor disability in India.
The problem of loco-motor disability in terms of sheer numbers is massive.
In 1975 or earlier there were hardly one or two institutions in India, fitting artificial limbs and providing other aids and appliances.
Besides, in the earlier years there was a problem of design.The resultant artificial limbs were very heavy and cumbersome in use.
The percentage of rejection of such limbs was very high.
Time taken to manufacture a custom made limb was several weeks
They were very expensive and beyond the reach of most of the amputees.
The USP The Jaipur Foot has virtually got the same range of movements which a normal human foot has. “It is an all-functional, all-terrain limb” Walk /Run Squat Kneeling Crouching Sitting cross legged Walking also on undulated terrain Climbing a tree , Driving an automobile.
