Intro To NETS For Students Grade Level 3-5(ages 811) Student Performance Indicators In Detail By Joel Davis
ISTE | NETS for Students 2007 Profiles
1.Produce A Media-Rich Digital Story About A Significant Local Event Based On First Person Interviews. (1,2,3,4) I think it would be a great idea to have students make a mock newscast covering a current event of their choice, recording themselves interviewing people familiar with the event, and turning it into an imovie. I also think it would be a good idea to have students interview local people as a way to research a current event, and turn the results into a podcast.
2.Recognize Bias In Digital Resources While Researching An Environmental Issue With Guidance From The Teacher. (3,4) I think it would be a good idea for students to pick an environmental issue of their choice and research it using a variety of digital resources; official government websites, scholarly journals, blogs, random Internet sites, etc. Then, I would like the class to compare their resources to determine which types of resources are most reliable, and why. I think it would also be good for the students to compare and contrast their information from the different resources. I.E. how does the information from a government website differ from that of someone’s personal blog? Are there personal agendas and inaccuracies in the unofficial sites? Do the scholarly journals offer different facts than the random websites?
Applying A Variety Of Ergonomic Strategies When Using Technology.(5) It is important for students to learn ergonomic strategies in the classroom when dealing with technologies. I would have them become familiar with these strategies and practice them daily. Stretch often, be aware of posture, take frequent breaks, change position often. When using a laptop: keep wrists neutral, keep elbows at 90 degrees or slightly more, ears, shoulders and elbows should be in vertical alignment, shoulders should be relaxed, head and neck should be relaxed. Use two hands for two-key functions, keep fingers relaxed, use a light touch while typing.
4.Debate The Effect Of Existing And Emerging Technologies On Individuals, Society, And The Global Community (5,6) For this indicator, I think it would be a good idea to have the students research the advancements in technology, and decide what has been positive and what has been negative. The class should then debate as to whether those benefits outweigh the negatives. The class should then debate and discuss how technology has affected the global community, and whether this has been a positive contribution. The class should also debate how technology has affected social relationships, and where they think technology is taking us in this way.
