So much summer fun in so many ways BY BRANDON DARNELL

he heat of summer is already settling on Lincoln and just days before most schools get out for the summer, residents of all ages were making their plans for the summer. Brothers Daniel and Alan Palmer were picking up a few sodas last week and said they hope to be able to spend their free time lazing around out of the heat. Although not the best of circumstances, Corky said he plans on making the most of the situation. “I’m going to take some time off to spend with my wife and kids,” Corky said.

“We’ll be going to Monterey at the end of the summer.” Alison Lukins said she and her family will be
doing “the usual” by going camping at Rawlins Lake with friends. “We take a trailer and just head up there,” Lukins
said. “We’ll go swimming and keep cool.” Heading half an ocean away from Lincoln is Leland Rice, who will
travel to the Hawaiian Islands June 21 to celebrate a wedding and his own 27th birthday. “I’m going to Kauai and Maui,” Rice said. “Other than that, I’ll just be working.” Traveling the opposite way this summer is Lincoln resident Tony Breitahaupt – but he’s not coming back. “We’re moving to Wyoming,” Breitahaupt said. “I inherited a rock shop. We’re going to take it over and learn about fossils.” Breitahaupt said he expects to be buying, selling and trading fossils before summer is over. On the other end of the age spectrum from fossils is one of Lincoln’s newest
residents, who will be coming into the world this summer, according to expecting mother Linnea Roberts, adding that having a baby will be her summer’s work. For 5-year-old Alec Roberts, a new sibling isn’t the only exciting aspect of the approaching summer. “I get to play sports,” Alec said, adding that he will be playing soccer with his friends. While not playing soccer, Alec will be racing his Matchbox cars, which he eagerly opened just after getting out of the Target store last Thursday. ant to take a vacation in the tropics? Look no further than the kitchen for an island-style escape. Let the fresh, delicious flavor of mango and onion enhance the meal and help transport you and your dinner guests on a taste adventure without ever leaving home.
ONION FACTS • Onions add the perfect combination of flavor and nutrition to any dish. • Yellow, red and white onions from the United States are available year round. Fresh onions are available from March to August. Storage onions, harvested in early fall, are marketed the remainder of the year.
• Chopped or sliced onions can be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to seven days. • To reduce tears when cutting onions, use a sharp, straight-edge knife. Refrigerating an onion about 30 minutes prior to cutting will also lessen the chemical reaction that causes tears.

FEATURED OF BUSINESS THE Eye-Q Optometry
745 S. Hwy 65, Ste. 70 • Lincoln • 916-434-6225 Dr. Melody O. Quenzer, owner of Eye-Q Optometry understands both sides of the patient/doctor relationship of eye healthcare. She was born with crossed eye (strabismus) and lazy eye (amblyopia) and, by the age of 18 months, had her first pair of glasses and first surgery. For her, those lifelong trips to her optometrist and ophthalmologist created an interest in the field. “As long as I can remember,” she states, “I always wanted to be a doctor; and, during my last year of college, I decided that optometry was the perfect career for me.” Dr. Quenzer grew up in the Sacramento area and attended California State University, Melody O. Quenzer, O.D. Sacramento where she received a degree in biology. She went on to earn her doctorate from the New England College of Optometry in Boston, in May of 1999. Following that, she was in private practice in South Lake Tahoe until September of 2008 when she decided to move back to the Sacramento vicinity and pursue her dream of owning her own business, which evolved into Eye Q Optometry. Eye-Q Optometry has two wonderful and experienced employees – Fareha Anwar and Anne Cook, who are multitalented in making everyone feel comfortable and providing excellent care and assistance – from filling out paperwork to fittings and selection. Dr. Quenzer is available to treat eye care emergencies 24 hours a day. Located in the Sterling Point Shopping Center, near Raley’s, the practice offers the latest in fashion eye wear for all ages, styles and budgets as well as comprehensive eye examinations, contact lens fittings, and emergency eye care. Laser & Cataract evaluations and surgical comanagement with leading ophthalmologists are also available. Dr. Quenzer loves the smaller, intimate feeling of Lincoln. Her passions include spending time with family and friends, and taking on the challenge of being the best optometrist she can. She enjoys drawing, something she has done since a child, exercising, dancing, and listening to music. Dr. Quenzer feels very fortunate for the new referrals and returning patients thus far that have helped build her practice. Stop by and say hi to the staff and view some of the great eye wear selections they offer. If scheduling permits, Dr. Quenzer would love to meet you as well. Advertisement
