WHAT’S

The Lincoln Arts and Culture Foundation includes art and also craft items in all media, plus cards, self-published books and jewelry, at its gift shop. This includes work of both established artists and new artists. The foundation's juried shop is inside the main gallery at 580 6th St.

incoln Arts is focusing on new, up-and-coming artists in 2009, according to Executive Director Claudia Renati. Renati said she wants to give new artists an opportunity to show their work and hopefully bring new visitors to Lincoln Arts, which is at 580 6th St. The first show this year features work by photographer Ciara McCaig, Renati said. McCaig’s show runs from Jan. 13 through Feb. 27, with a reception for the artist on Jan. 16. Renati said this is McCaig’s first solo show. McCaig described having her first solo show as “incredibly exciting.” The show came about by a “chance of luck,” McCaig said, because one of the Lincoln Arts curators saw some of her work and offered her the show. McCaig mainly does por-

were created for the Lincoln Arts show, McCaig said. The show inspired her to produce “a mountain” of new work that push the boundaries of regular portraiture, McCaig added. “All of these photos are close to my heart because these women are particularly close to me,” McCaig said.

“And they’re all fantastically beautiful women as well.” The nonprofit Lincoln Arts will also hold its 22nd Feats of Clay international ceramics competition and exhibit in April and May. Renati said, however, that the future of Feats of Clay is in doubt following this year’s exhibition, due to difficult

economic times. “We’re on an extremely tight budget,” Renati said. “Lincoln Arts definitely needs new sponsors and members.” The Feats of Clay exhibition costs the center nearly $70,000 to put on, Renati said. If Lincoln Arts does not bring in more sponsors this year, it will not only stop putting on the Feats of Clay event but may have to close down the center as well, Renati warned. “If we don’t get more donations, we will lose this wonderful event. It’s the only international event in this community,” Renati said. “I hope more people will open up their wallets and pocketbooks for us this year.” For more information or to donate to Lincoln Arts, call 645-9713 or check the Web at www.lincolnarts.org.

he Lincoln Public Library staff hopes to see residents of all ages at both the downtown venue and the Twelve Bridges venue. Darla Wegener, director of library services, said the library will continue the programs it offered in 2008 for 2009. These programs include the “Mother Goose on the Darla Wegener Loose” earlyliteracy program, the twicemonthly movie night and the adult-reading program. The library will also continue its Summer Reading program this year, Wegener said. The program, which begins June 15, is designed to keep children reading over their summer break.

New this year at the library will be a party to celebrate the end of the Summer Reading program. Wegener said she hopes Mayor Spencer Short will agree to attend the party, which takes place Aug. 1. While no specifics have been set yet for the party program, Wegener said it will include entertainment and great prizes for program participants. The Friends of the Lincoln Library will also continue its

regular set of programs this year except one, said Vice President Shirley Russell. The organization has canceled its Poetry Place program this year because the previous coordinator stepped down this year and no one was found to replace her, Russell said. The Friends of the Lincoln Library has also added another book sale this year because community members have donated so many books, Russell said. The book sale

he Lincoln Parks and Recreation department is opening two new public parks this year. No official date has been set for the openings of Machado Park and Auburn Ravine Park but the city is putting the final touches on them and they should be open soon, said Ray Leftwich, senior civil engineer for the City of Lincoln. Machado Park, located at 646 Downing Circle, should be opening first – as soon as

the first two weeks into the new year, according to Leftwich “We’re putting on the finishing touches at Machado Park,” Leftwich said. “We may open it to the public within the next couple of weeks as we finish it up.” The 3.5-acre Machado Park includes a large playground area, a lawn area with picnic tables and a walking trail. The playground includes two play areas – one for 2- to 5-year-olds and one for 5- to 12-year-olds. Leftwich said the landscape architect incorporated an old oak tree on the site into the park’s design.

Destiny Vasquez, 12, of Lincoln, pushes her sister, Samantha, 16, and their 8-monthold puppy, Molly, on a Markham Park swing on a recent cool winter morning. The city is planning on opening two new parks during 2009.

“The landscape architect did a great job working around the oak tree. The playgrounds are built around it,” Leftwich said. “The mats at the playgrounds have oak leaf and acorn designs in them to tie it all in.” The city is also putting the finishing touches on Auburn Ravine Park, located at 1300 Green Ravine Drive, that will

open later in the spring, Leftwich said. Leftwich said the reason the 10-acre Auburn Ravine Park is opening later is because it includes a 2-acre open-leash dog park. “We want to give the turf a chance to really get a deep hold before we let the dogs in.” Leftwich said. “If we let the dogs in now, they would
